How bad is satellite internet service?

I'm considering buying a house in rural Vermont where cable and dsl internet are not available, and mobile phone service is spotty. It seems the only option would be satellite internet through a provider such as HughesNet. Would this be a huge mistake? [more inside]

Short-term ISP in Champaign, IL

I moved to Champaign last weekend (will be here until mid-August) and my plan to use the library as my ISP is already wearing on me. It seems that everyone hates Comcast—I haven't been able to reach customer service to ask about options, so I get that already. My post-August plans are up in the air, therefore I don't want to sign a 12 month contract even if it can be transferred to another location. What are my options for short-term internet access? Negotiating the best Comcast internet rates (PDX edition)

Ok, theoretically simple question that I can't find a simple answer to: I'm currently a Comcast customer subscribed to low-tier tv and internet. I'd like to drop my tv service and replace it with an antenna for OTA channels and a higher internet tier for streaming and general internet'ing (Comcast is my only real internet option, so I won't be dropping them entirely). I need advice as to how to get the best possible rate for the internet service. Details below the fold. [more inside]

What do I do with years-old equipment that belongs to my old cable ISP?

What do I do with years-old equipment that belongs to my old cable service provider? Equipment dates from 2009. Furnished by Verizon FIOS, which then switched to Frontier FIOS. A cable modem, DVR, and set-top box. We moved house in 2010, and cancelled Frontier service. Attempted to return the equipment. This involved them shipping empty boxes to us. We never got the boxes. Attempts failed. I have no documentation of those attempts. Equipment is sitting in our garage, and I need to get rid of it. Which option is best? The easy way: Donate the equipment to a recycler. The hard way: Contact Frontier and try to return their equipment. This is likely to be time-consuming, and annoying. I recall their CS was incredibly awful. I couldn't find any helpful info on their web site. And what if they want to charge me a "late return fee"??? Do big cable providers care about their old equipment?

Why is my ISP changing physical locations?

While signing on with my VPN software recently I noticed that my ISP's physical location has changed. I live in Cleveland and when ever I would use my VPN software, as I do a few times a week, there is a map that tells me where my ISP resides. Recently, after years the map now shows that my home ISP is now in Kansas, however searching for my ISP address on various websites, it says my ISP is in Pennsylvania as well. Confused. I am aware that my home ISP changes frequently but it has always been in Cleveland. I have rebooted my modem and router a few times and it still reads the location in Kansas. Any Ideas?

It's like the dark ages here....

Forgive the crappy typing as I'm doing this on my phone. 2 days ago the transformer in front of our house was struck by lightening. We were without power for a day (which really sucks since we're on a well so without power we have no pump to get water). Anyway power restored but then I notice no router. The router got fried by the lightening and so I call Verizon fios and talk to dude who tells me that the earliest they can send someone out, because its not just router that fried but apparently the main thing to our house as well, is September 10th. I'm pretty pissed and frustrated. I get that it's not their fault and it might be restored earlier but come on, 8 days? Do I have any recourse? Like not paying for 8 days I have no service? I'm thinking of switching but we've only got 2 ISP's in our area, Cox and Verizon. Even the Verizon customer service guy was apologizing and saying that they are short staffed etc. Do I call every day? What's the best way to deal with this. Needless to say right now I'm thinking Verizon sucks in the worst way.

Just How Many Generic Host Processes Does One Person Need?

So I'm checking my process explorer and I'll be - but I've got NINE host processes running. Why? Are they all necessary? Is this suspicious? All I have is a pen tablet, browser, AV and ISP going. How do I delve further to investigate? The only reason I'm looking into it is because out of the blue my ISP is majorly lagging and this is just in the last 2 days. SOMETHING is on my tail and I want it off. Thanks for any heads up.

I live in London and need an ISP that's not horrible.

I've just moved and need to find a good UK ISP. My priorities are reliability, good service from human beings, and refraining from shady practices like traffic shaping or overselling the network. Price, decent data allowances and not being owned by Murdoch are also desirable. [more inside]

ISProblems

What is it with CenturyLink, and some ISP in Hong Kong whose name I forget, that every so often it will decide that it can't "find" a web page... usually one that I was just at, and often including metafilter! Instead of going to the page I want, it redirects me to a CenturyLink search page, like this, which has the link I want at the very top (www.metafilter.com in this example), yet when I click on that link from their completely extraneous search page, it just goes back to the same search page?! Why would my ISP routing Google traffic differently?

Why would my ISP routing Google traffic differently? What is traffic-shaping, and why is it considered "questionable" for an ISP to do this? I'm on Vancouver Island, in Canada. My ISP is Shaw, and everyone on Shaw on Vancouver Island experienced some issues with Google domains including YouTube and G+ for most of the day. Here's a thread where users are discussing the problem. In the thread I linked above, some folks are saying that there must have been either a critical failure, or "they're traffic-shaping or otherwise filtering results from Google-based websites. That's highly questionable behaviour." What does this mean? While I had internet connectivity, I couldn't access Gmail or Google Search, and ended up using my Telus phone's WiFi hotspot to work (we all work remotely and use Google Apps).

I'm a professional poker player and internet disconnects cost me money. Each disconnect averages around 5 dollars, but obviously if it disconnects at the wrong time it could cost me thousands. Multiple torrent connections simultaneously go to 0 KB/sec. Why?

I've started DLing torrents from a tracker I was recently introduced to, after only having have some experience with one other tracker that's now gone, and I'm encountering a minor issue that puzzles me. I've noticed that periodically, all my torrents will simultaneously go from whatever speed they've been DLing at to 0 KB/sec, and then all return to their former speed at the same moment as well, after a delay of up to several minutes. What could be the reason for this? [more inside]
