I sat on the phone with Microsoft support and they weren't able to help me. I've scoured the internet trying to find a solution to this problem and I'm just about ready to give up. Can Metafilter rise to the challenge? How do I stop Microsoft Excel from formatting numbers into scientific notation? No matter what I do, Excel keeps doing this. Please make it stop. See the youtube video I made explaining my problem (45 seconds). [more inside]
How do you spot an amateur in your trade, profession, or hobby? Specifically, what are some examples of things that people without experience do, while attempting what you do or know well, because they don't know any better that make their lack of experience obvious? [more inside]
I have a large number of books that I want to donate to a library or sell. I want to give my friends and family first pick at anything they want (my primary aim is to quickly reclaim the physical space used up by the books). I need a workflow that will allow me to scan the books' UPCs, etc. with my iPhone 4's camera and end up with an email-able spreadsheet pre-populated with ISBN/Title/Author. Columns for genre, edition and/or year, and short blurbs would also be welcome. I have a PC laptop with the MS Office suite in addition to the iPhone. What are my options? Thanks, hivemind!
I need to input a large number of ISBNs off books I own into a document (the better to sell them with!). Is there a way to do this quickly without scanning barcodes? [more inside]
How can I find out if a CD is enclosed with a book, if I have the ISBN number? Is there a web resource for ISBN inquiry that would give such info with physical details of the book. [more inside]
I'd like to put a personal library of around 200 books in order by the Library of Congress Classification System. I plan to take them off my shelves then scan all of their ISBNs for inclusion on LibraryThing... Then what? How do I get LCC numbers from ISBN numbers for ordering/labeling? How should I label them? Once, there were ten-digit ISBNs. Then, someone added a three-digit "978" prefix, the checksum digit at the end of the number changed, and now ---shazam--- they are Thirteen-digit ISBNs. Are they planning one day to use prefixes besides "978"? What was the point of this massive and seemingly pointless change? [more inside]
A question for those who know far more than I do about citation formats: why do none of them include ISBN numbers? [more inside]
I have a USB hand held barcode scanner and I have an enormous pile of books I need to scan into some sort of usable database for sale online. What software would be most useful and where would you recommend selling them online? I'm using Windows XP Pro.
Programming neophyte looking for a language to start with. Or, what language should I learn to complete these tasks?
What programming language should a neophyte start with to organize his life? Yes, another one of those questions. But I have two specific tasks that I'd like to accomplish and this makes choosing a language really hard for me. Especially since i'm a complete n00bler. [more inside]

I'm publishing a book. How do I go about getting Library of Congress information to include behind the title page? [more inside]
A book I wrote was going to get published but then the publisher went out of business. Before they went under the publisher assigned my book an ISBN, so the never-published book still appears in various databases. How do I de-register the ISBN and remove it from the web?
I was at a massive used booksale in Phoenix, Arizona today. I saw at least ten 20-something people with Treos and/or PocketPCs with barcode scanners scanning in tons of books.. it looked like they were doing real-time queries to some server getting book values and stuff like that. Who / what / where is going on? Is this a massive business or is this a new fad that young punks to now ... or what?
