[Excelfilter] How do I stop Excel from formatting my numbers?

I sat on the phone with Microsoft support and they weren't able to help me. I've scoured the internet trying to find a solution to this problem and I'm just about ready to give up. Can Metafilter rise to the challenge? How do I stop Microsoft Excel from formatting numbers into scientific notation? No matter what I do, Excel keeps doing this. Please make it stop. See the youtube video I made explaining my problem (45 seconds). [more inside]

Bookfort self-destruct will commence in 5 ... 4 ... 3 ...

I have a large number of books that I want to donate to a library or sell. I want to give my friends and family first pick at anything they want (my primary aim is to quickly reclaim the physical space used up by the books). I need a workflow that will allow me to scan the books' UPCs, etc. with my iPhone 4's camera and end up with an email-able spreadsheet pre-populated with ISBN/Title/Author. Columns for genre, edition and/or year, and short blurbs would also be welcome. I have a PC laptop with the MS Office suite in addition to the iPhone. What are my options? Thanks, hivemind!

from TEN DIGIT to THIRTEEN DIGIT --- an improvement or a headache?

Once, there were ten-digit ISBNs. Then, someone added a three-digit "978" prefix, the checksum digit at the end of the number changed, and now ---shazam--- they are Thirteen-digit ISBNs. Are they planning one day to use prefixes besides "978"? What was the point of this massive and seemingly pointless change? [more inside]
