Planning for telnet on DHCP

I need some help on networking and ip addresses. I'm working on a project that uses a RN-XV Wifly module to connect to a home's wifi network. To use the device you will have a GUI that on the back-end telnets to the Wifly module and sends a serial string of commands. So if the Wifly address is 10.1.0.17, it would send: [more inside]

You don't need permission to dress up as a copyrighted character, but do you need permission to write about it?

Use old iPhone as a second phone over wifi but with primary phone number

Please help me design a method for using an old iPhone to make and receive calls on my current AT&T wireless number by WiFi, preferably for free. Ideally, I would like to have this old iPhone (without service), sitting on my desk, ringing when calls come into my current AT&T number, and when I make outgoing calls via Wifi, the caller ID shows my current number. The reason is primarily that AT&T coverage is horrible inside my house, so the ability to do this by wifi at home would be great. But I hate the confusion created when you make outgoing calls and the number is different. I can think of very convoluted ways to do it, so I'm asking you smarties if you have a better way.

Please help me find resources that explain the terms of "ownership" in patents on improved seeds and plant materials.

I have a question about patents in relationship to "improved" seeds and plant materials (my knowledge of IP law and plant breeding is pretty limited). I'm trying to understand more precisely the terms of ownership of these agreements. For example, I understand there are reach-through provisions that exclude materials from being used for purposes other than research. I also understand that many biotech firms are not interested in plant materials that contain technologies not already part of their IP portfolios. Please direct me to resources that will help me understand the terms of ownership -- how "property," in this case is information, is made explicit with these agreements.

Learn me some IP/Networking for home a/v & automation?

I want to learn about IP and Network integration for home theater/home automation. Cedia looks like they have exactly what I'm looking for...but not until September. I'm reasonably computer-savvy and a fast learner, so my first choice would be a fast-paced crash course, starting right-the-heck now. In order of preference: Live in-person class(es), interactive learning website or software, book, non-interactive website. Also, location in the Northeast US is optimal but not required. Thanks!

Looking for a short story on copyright micropayments

Looking for a dystopian short story that made the rounds around half a year ago about intellectual property. What's the easiest/cheapest way to set up a home surveillance camera that will notify me and stream video for remote viewing/recording if somebody enters my home while I'm gone?

What is the easiest, cheapest, most effective way for me to set up a single motion-triggered surveillance camera at home to verify whether I have a creepy situation going on while I'm gone? If triggered, I want it to alert me remotely, stream video for remote live viewing, and ideally record to the cloud rather than locally for later viewing. I'd like an easy web/desktop interface to control it all. Have you tried one of those kits from X10 for this and did it work well for you? [more inside]

Can't access one specific site

How do I refresh someone else's IP? I can't load a specific site I usually access every day when I am connected to my home ISP, although I can get to the site when I'm at work and on my smartphone. Absolutely NONE of my browsers can load the site, even those which I've never uised to visit the site before. When I contacted my ISP tonight, the tech said that he could access the same site from his computer, so it doesn't appear to be a DNS issue there. I have no problems loading any other sites on my browsers. What gives? [more inside]

How can I decode HTTP traffic from an IP webcam into full URLs?

I have a cheapo IP WiFi webcam, its video & audio feed is viewed via an ActiveX plugin in IE. I want to access theses feeds in Linux. I was wondering if there was some tool I could use in Win XP to monitor the network traffic on my PC when using IE to access the webcam, to get the full URLs to the audio and video feeds. All the tools I have used so far just give me the IP address and port, not the full http address.

Connect Two!

Two computers at work: my desktop, and a DVR-capture computer in another workcenter. I can "ping" the DVR computer from my desktop using the ipconfig command with no problem. Accessing it from my browser, however, does not work. Tried both Firefox and MS IE. Using the same IP address (http://xxx.xxx.x.xxx) in both instances, but no luck connecting via browser. Our internet guy claims that there's no firewall issues. So what's the problem - why can't I connect to the DVR computer from my desktop? Much obliged for any assist, MeFites!
