A few months a ago I shortened a URL wit the Google URL Shortener (https://goo.gl/[etc] and distributed it to a small handful of people. As recently as two weeks ago, it continued to work just fine. [more inside]
Remember back when the internet started, and it was all about connecting with people you'd never met before? We're not talking Chatroulette, message boards, or anyone asking 'A/S/L?', but just having interesting, non-creepy, real-time conversations with strangers? I miss that. Is there a corner of the internet where that still exists?
What are my SIM options for a two week visit to Australia (Sydney) followed by a 1 week visit to NZ (Wellington then drive down west coast of south island to Queenstown)? [more inside]
Trying to get an idea of the cost in both money and time to set up an 8 modem BBS in 1987. Anecdotal evidence would be useful. Thank you!
For some reason my U-verse modem will not let me connect to facebook. When I use a VPN I am able to connect but it just times without it. Every other site I have tried has not been a problem. I have had others try to sign on to their accounts both hard wired and wirelessly and the same results ATT tech support has hit a wall in being able to help me with this and that includes having a tech out to swap the modem. Seems to be a head scratcher for everyone. Is there an answer in the Hive?
I have a site that I have started a few months ago. It is a site where I am selling random stuff right now and seeing what works. I have had some conversion from Reddit posts that got a few thousand hits so that seems to be helping but it is not always reliable since you never know what is going to go viral. Also, I'd like to open up more channels for selling. The problem is that acquiring visitors can be expensive. Does anyone know of any reasonably priced ways to generate good targeted traffic in 2015? I am not looking for SEO as an answer. I am interested in promoting the products on this site and getting conversions. I am still working on improving the site but I already know that it can convert at a reasonably good rate so my problem now is just acquiring visitors at a reasonable price.

The website is styled like Bento.io's grid page, and has descriptions of bento.io's resource listings (and more), except it's a single static page with just the listing or directory of programming languages, frameworks and libraries for the web. [more inside]
A few months ago, I was reading some long-form news article (that I probably found here) and I really liked the mechanics of how the site was displayed as you read it. Unfortunately, I have no idea where the site was or even what the story was about. Hopefully, y'all can help. Description and specific questions inside. [more inside]

We recently moved and chose Frontier (formerly Verizon) FIOS for our Internet service since the other option was Comcast. The service is the lowest tier (50/50) but we were coming from DSL with lower speeds and it was fine so we were expecting it to be OK. And it is. Sometimes. Other times it is really slow to unusable. Like, the airport on my Mac won't even connect to the router sometimes. Sometimes it will connect but I have to wait 2-4 minutes for an URL I typed in to load. Sometimes it goes up and down, disconnectng and reconnecting our wifi devices every few minutes. And other times, like right now, it's absolutely fine. [more inside]

How do I wean myself off this urge to constantly check the internet? Sometimes I use an app blocker or turn of the internet when I need to do a focused session of work, but I find myself feeling this strong, psychological itch to use the internet anyway. The urge is so strong it's distracting, even if the internet is inaccessible. [more inside]
I just got back from a lengthy trip to Asia and I think my computer may have picked something up. I have a new Macbook Air and I use Firefox for browsing. I am getting many many redirecting of pages clicked. Very annoying. Is there an easy fix or diagnosis? I am not really savy in configuring but I will say that my popups are disabled in the preferences. Thank you hive

The Lore thread reminded me of something else from that era of the web, one of the first group blogs I encountered, and now I am annoyed because I can't remember the name or more details. It was a bunch of interconnected art/tech/media people, mostly based in the SF Bay Area I believe. The name riffed off 'cereal' in some way, but all the keywords are too general to fish anything up out of google. [more inside]

I'm looking for a website with list(s) of movies that are upcoming on tv so that I can set my dvr to record the ones that I'd like to see. I'm looking for lists that are either specific to one channel (so I can look at each channel separately), or one that could contain only the channels in my Directv package (so that I don't have to pick through ones that I can't record due to not being subscribed to the channel they're playing on). I'd be happy going through multiple lists (one for each channel, like FX, ABC, IFC, etc.), but it would be great to have a list with only the channels I get. Thanks!
I would like to set up a computer for my internet-addicted teenage son (windows 7 or 8, let's say) where internet access is constrained by a "whitelist" of sites. I am responsible for a library of about 1200 books, which I've cataloged in a database. I'd like to put the database on our website so that readers can search for a book without having to visit the library. I have experience with Python and to a lesser extent, MySQL. What is the best way to create a searchable database online using these tools or something else that's relatively easy to learn?
I have owned the .com of a domain for about 10 years. Hadn't done anything with it although I had planned to. Competitor appears to have bought the .net of the same name about 2 years ago, put up a website, and is probably selling his service from it (our occupation is exactly the same)... [more inside]

A family friend needs help. Over the last few years he's been sinking more and more of his life into MMORPGs and internet time wasting. He's socially isolated -- no friends, low social skills. He was a pretty normal, fun kid up until about 15. He's in the midst of flunking out of his freshman year of college (after an in-between year spent similarly wasted). [more inside]

After weeks and weeks of making lists for a name for my studio, I saw that it was not available as a .com but was as a .net, and it got me thinking: Is a .net as good as a .com or is does it sound cheap in comparison? Over the past few years, I've found myself turning into a relative hermit - living alone, going out and about alone, spending time with my family but not really anyone else in 'real life,' preferring the wider range of people and opportunities on the internet for friendship and comradeship.
