Bike parking in Hyde Park

Bicycle advice in Hyde Park (Chicago) I am going to be moving to Hyde Park in about a month. I'll be living near 54th and Lake Park, so I'm pretty close to a Metra stop and the Jackson Park Express bus route. But I'm about 1.8 miles from both the Garfield and 51st Green line stops.

Is locking up a bike at either of these stops during the day a dumb idea? What about around Hyde Park in general? If it makes a difference, I have a newish but cheap (downtube shifters) road bike. My seat and wheels aren't quick release, but they can be unscrewed with an Allen wrench.

Will we be unwelcome in Bronzeville?

Seeking advice and opinion about moving to Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood. My husband and I are considering a move from our northside Uptown neighborhood to the historic and historically African-American Bronzeville area. To get to the point here, my husband and I are accustomed to living in very diverse (racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, etc.) urban areas, we both appreciate character, history and architecture, and we both happen to be white. My questions for other Mefites who live in or are familiar with the Bronzeville area are as follows: Do you think that we, as white professionals, are an improper/unwelcome addition to Bronzeville? Is there much (some?) diversity (Latino, white, Asian) in Bronzeville? Are you happy living there?

My biggest concern with moving to Bronzeville is that I might feel isolated there for lack of diversity and because there seem to be fewer markets and restaurants within walking/biking distance as compared to here on the northside.

I would be very grateful for any and all honest comments and insights from Mefites living in or familiar with the Bronzeville area.

From what cool neighborhoods can I commute to Hyde Park?

As I finish up the first year of my graduate program at U. Chicago, I think I'd like to move north from Hyde Park to a more exciting neighborhood. But where? Hyde Park is nice, but I think I'd like to move to someplace with more stuff going on. A neighborhood with cool coffeeshops and bars and maybe a music venue or two - but still livable (safety, grocery shopping, rent ~ $1500 for 2BR, &etc). I'll still need to be able to get to class though, by public transit and in some reasonable amount of time (which realistically seems to mean I'll need to live near the Red or maybe Blue lines).

What neighborhoods/areas should I be looking at?

Apartment hunting near U. Chicago

HydeParkHousing: I'll be an entering graduate student at UofC this fall. I've never rented an apartment before, nor do I know Hyde Park (or, for that matter, Chicagoland generally). Help me find a place to live! For my first year, I've pretty well decided I want to rent a studio in Hyde Park. The main thing I'm wondering about is what locations (in addition to my lab at 57th and S. Drexel) do I want to ensure I live near? That is, where are the grocery/drug stores, bars/restaurants, public transport stops (I hope to be able to venture downtown sometimes), and the like that I need for daily life and want to ensure that I live near? Alternately, any places I should avoid living too near? (Frathouse row, maybe, or other exceptionally loud or sketchy areas?)

General apartment-hunting tips for the area would also be great - especially questions that I should be sure to ask about potential apartments. Are there any particular buildings or landlords that should be pursued or avoided? Thoughts on university-owned (I've already applied) vs. private housing would also be of interest.

It seems like I'll be able to get (cheap?) DSL anywhere, and that, while central-air is uncommon, window air conditioners are universally allowed/used in summer (and often rented from the landlord). Accurate? Roughly how much should I budget for utilities (assuming I don't watch TV, and ideally would pay the telco only for naked DSL)?

I won't have a car, and I want to cap rent+utilities at $700 max. (By the way, I'm curious: are rents realistically negotiable, the way house-prices are always assumed to be?) And, for added difficulty, I have to do this whole process from Cleveland, 6+ hours away. Thank you!

Hyde Park apartments for kids?

Does anyone know of Hyde Park (Chicago) apartment buildings with children's playrooms or an otherwise kid-friendly environment? My brother was just admitted to the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. He'll be moving his wife and infant son to Hyde Park this fall. I went to the University of Chicago myself, and can just imagine his wife and son cooped up all winter.

Google and the University of Chicago website have each completely failed me in terms of finding buildings with nice children's playrooms, and all of the online Chicago real-estate resources are for northside living.
