My grandmother taught me that a game of bridge can be vicious and cut throat, but she didn't teach me what it takes to host a card game. A couple of friends are coming over Saturday night to play cards (probably bridge, but we might play hearts euchre) and I don't know what to provide other than paper for scoring, a table, and a deck of cards. What food or drinks should I serve? [more inside]

A friend of mine is looking to use Minecraft PE with a group of 20 kids who will be playing on iPads. They're looking for an opinion on what the best way to host a server will be. They want a persistent server that will be available around the clock, they will not be playing with mods, and they'd like it to be as maintenance free as possible. What are good, reliable, and scam free hosting solutions for mobile Minecraft? [more inside]

I have a .co.uk domain which is hosted by Bluehost. However, after some time the only thing I use it for is to forward email addresses to my main gmail address. Is there a cheap and reliable alternative which just provides email forwarding?
I have had a number of technical difficulties with Dreamhost that have worsened over the last year and my account is up for a two-year renewal. I have two sites: one a WordPress blog and the other an old MediaWiki installation. What are good alternatives to Dreamhost, and how would I migrate the WP and wiki installations off their servers and onto the new hosting service?
We have a website. It is a simple WordPress install. We have software for Mac, PC, Android, and iOS. The last two game clients are handled by Large Companies With A Cloud. The first two are just on our webserver and this is not a good long-term plan. Where is the best place to post these game clients? [more inside]
Today I found out that the service that I've been using for at least a year now is closing down. I was on Flickr for a long time (starting 2006?), but I just don't trust Yahoo either. So I guess that means I should do something self-hosted...what are my options these days? [more inside]
I'm hosting a brunchluck (brunch potluck, for my birthday) and want it to be festive, warm, etc. I'm not sure how to decorate/theme/make it really warm and welcoming given that it's going to be rainy and grey outside. Difficulty level: grad student brokeness and I'm *really* not a decorator, plus additional logistics questions. [more inside]
It's time to move on from my mail losing/delaying hosting service, despite their generally excellent support. In 2014, who would you recommend? Must haves: reliable, under $15/month, supports WordPress, uses cPanel. Nice to have: Canadian, green, some other awesome attributes of your choice. (I could get this domain hosted free at DreamHost as an add-on to my backup domain, but I can't stand their admin panel. As an alternative, try to sell me on the DreamHost panel!)
I've moved to a new place and need to meet some friends. I'm thinking of hosting some casual brunch/dinner parties to help fix this. Problem: I suck at dinner parties. How can I fix this? [more inside]
Do people outside of the US commonly go through the ritual of giving new guests "the tour" of their homes (i.e. a walkthrough, or at least peek at, every single room of the house/apartment, beyond what is necessary--not talking about overnight guests or housesitters, or showing folks the bathroom and where to put the coats)? I'm looking for hosting costs data that I can present to management. This is for 3 Drupal-based sites which each get approximately 100 million page views per year. [more inside]
My personal website has been down for the past 4 hours. Never had an iota of problem with GoDaddy before. I have domains through them and also shared hosting. Naturally, 4 hours of downtime is shocking to me, so I call them and say "Hey! What's up with THAT?" [more inside]
I work in an educational environment, and we have a local media server set up to record lectures and then allow them to be watched/downloaded online via podcast-type RSS, but only a limited number can be stored before they're deleted. How can I go about setting up a mirror of this RSS feed that will allow me to store these recordings indefinitely? More details inside. [more inside]

I've recently assumed a role that calls on me to do some serious community-building and group facilitation and I'm feeling pretty unprepared. I'd love advice on possible trainings -- workshops, conferences, methods, even online resources. I'm open to anything really, from the micro of how groups form and interact, to more zoomed out training on the development of large communities and even social movements. [more inside]
Pretty much what it says on the tin. I currently have index.html as the top level page on my domain. On a specific day at a specific time, I want to have that page change to e.g. index2.html more or less permanently. I would like this to be a surprise and specifically timed, so it needs to be a) server side, and ideally b) invisible even to someone poking around. GoDaddy is my host, I have complete backend access to everything, and know next to nothing about php or js, so please explain like I'm 5.
I'm looking for a new home for three IMAP inboxes. Each one should be able to handle up to 10-15 GB of stored mail. I want a reliable long-term service that is supported by fees rather than ads. [more inside]

Hello! I am looking for a provider that will allow me to a) Host tutorial videos b) Sell streaming videos to customers. Think of websites like lynda.com - but on a much smaller scale. I've found one provider viddler.com - no luck yet finding others. Mayhaps the hive mind has an idea? Thanks!
ISP: Web Hosting Control Panel, cPanel, Plesk and OSS solutions. Are they generally complete systems, front-end AND back-end? How are they designed technically, and is it worth using as an ISP. More inside! [more inside]
An organisation I volunteer for has been hosting the local chapter's email inboxes for a while now, but they have announced that they will no longer be doing so. I have been tasked with finding a hosting company that will let us have 10-20 email addresses with an external domain. In your experience, o Hivemind, what's the best hosting company for this? Hit me with your anecdata. Thank for kind.
Can you please recommend a cheap ad-free commercial Mediawiki host? [more inside]
My boyfriend is having some coworkers over tomorrow night for a little get-together/party thing. This isn't their official christmas party (they had that at work last night), just a few (6-7 or so people) getting together. When asked about what he's doing for food, my boyfriend just assumed they'd all just go to the grocery store to get something, which I personally find pretty... weird. As I'm helping host, I want to provide better noms! [more inside]
I'm in need of a new webhost, and I need the following: SSH/SFTP, PHP support, ability to run background processes (namely the Unix version of Dropbox), webmail forwarding, and monthly payments. I don't need much space (1 GB would likely be plenty) or bandwidth (1 GB/mo? maybe?), and the Dropbox process is literally the only thing I would have running. What's my best, cheapest option? Thanks!
(Sorry, I'm Internet-challenged:) I keep a small website (essentially it's one html file) in my Dropbox folder as a minimalist way to share my various weird projects with friends. I like everything about this solution except the fact, that website's address is this ugly dl.dropbox.com/u/yadayaydaydyadyada/something/somethingelse.html Is there a way to mask this address from showing up in browser and replace it with something more elegant and free? Or is this some next level stuff?
I usually host Thanksgiving for our family, and I do a fairly good job. People have fun and the food's ok. I'm usually not too rushed at the last minute. I know it could be better, though. So here's my question: what special thing do you make or do that makes your Thanksgiving particularly efficient, or fun, or tasty, or awesome looking, or easy to clean up, or otherwise excellent? I'm especially interested in buffet serving ideas and what you use to make those look great or taste great (and should I buy one of those three-crock-pot serving thingies? I feel like my food gets cold really fast.) I want to hear everything from what you make in advance and how you reheat it, to how you deal with cleaning up all those big dishes afterwards. What about music? What about table decor? Tell me everything. [more inside]
Asking for a friend ... I need recommendations for a web hosting provider who handles listservs as well as website hosting. I’m the administrator for a professional association which has a WordPress website and a group email list. [more inside]

If I've upgraded PHP on my Mac, should I now avoid all OS X Updates? I'm hosting a website on a Mac mini in a datacenter, and some of my software required a newer version of PHP than what's included out-of-the-box in OS X Mountain Lion. I keep getting the notification saying system updates are ready, and restart to install. But I'm scared it's going to overwrite my PHP upgrades and break everything. And it took me an insanely long time to get the PHP upgrade to work properly and play nicely with OS X Server.

I'm running the latest LTS version of Ubuntu on my hosting provider's cloud VPS service. I recently noticed a series of weird, spammy looking messages in my server's mail.log file. Tech support at my hosting provider says it does not appear to be compromised; are they wrong? [more inside]
My blog made the front page of a major social media site this morning and the provider promptly locked my entire account for "abuse". It took 6 hours for my blog to come back online. Was that a typical response? [more inside]
I have been tasked with finding a web solution for a volunteer group associated with a university. There are already pages on one of the departments' websites, however, it will be months before any changes can be made to that as it's under the rule of a CMS which is about to be migrated and to which we won't be able to really do anything until November. We want all the usual stuff like a blog and a Twitter widget and latest news and yadda yadda, but anything we add - and possibly anything we remove - would have to wait till November if we use the existing hosting arrangement. This is why I want to stick up another web infrastructure for us somewhere else, probably not hosted by the university. [more inside]
