Where can I buy unique holiday cards in Orange County or south LA that are suitable for Christmas and Hanukkah and appropriate for friends and business colleagues?
My family will be joining me in the Boston area for Christmas this year, for the first time, for only a few days surrounding the 25th. If we were in NYC, near where I grew up, I'd know exactly what to do - see the windows, Rockefeller Ctr, St. Patrick's, the Grand Central train show...but I don't know what the Boston equivalents of these sightseeing traditions are. One caveat: Boston seems big on performing arts events for the holidays, and we probably aren't going to be able to coordinate schedules for ticketed events. I'm looking for things you can just drop in to. [more inside]
For the first time ever, my family is visiting Boston to celebrate Thanksgiving with my husband and me. I'm really excited, and I really need some help planning the dinner menu. [more inside]
I'm looking for a great pre-filled advent calendar that I can order online. Ideally under $30, and I want a surprise variety of things! [more inside]
What type of food (savory, doesn't need to be eaten right away) should I make for people this Christmas? Details, including allergies, below. [more inside]
I work long hours and I frequently get so caught up in work plus basic staying afloat with relationships and errands and life maintenance tasks that I feel like whole seasons pass without my really having noticed, despite the fact I really love holidays and seasonal celebrations. To counteract this I have been looking for minimalist ways to commemorate various special days so that I am more aware of time passing. [more inside]
My father, stepmother, aunt, cousin, and sister seem to have a vested interest in seeing me inaccurately. I've come to terms with their scapegoating and black-sheeping of me. It's been validated by numerous therapists as well as my mom, and the dynamic fits most of what I've read online about scapegoating dynamics. To abruptly go No Contact with them would make things much worse for me. I need Low Contact, polite, superficial strategies, please. [more inside]
Another question about my sister. She has a large pit bull and brings him everywhere (unless it's inconvenient, in which case she leaves him with a friend or family member). She wants to bring him to our house for Christmas. I don't want him to come. [more inside]
I've been dating a great guy for a few months now. About a month in he told me that his mom was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor 8 months before we met. His mom has done radiation and was seeming to get better in the last few months. He was making plans for me to meet his family for the first time on Thanksgiving. He just found out his mother has taken a turn for the worse (she's having difficulty walking), and I'd like to know: 1) how I can support him and 2) how to navigate meeting his family during this difficult time. Our family rarely takes vacations, and even then, just to visit family, or at best, to a nearby lake. But big leaps forward in our careers have us thinking it's time to finally treat ourselves. We're thinking of taking the kid to Vegas for Christmas and rolling out, if not all the stops, many more than we've customarily been able/willing to afford. Give us tips for Vegas in general, Vegas for families, Vegas at the holidays, and small and medium things we can do to feel like high rollers. [more inside]
I would like to make an amazing Rosh Hashanah dinner. What should I make? [more inside]
My family has decided to spend the holidays in Italy and at the Vatican. I'm doing all the planning and booking and I need some advice both in general, and specific to the holidays/closures etc. We will spend about 2 weeks and plan to see Rome/the Vatican, Florence and Venice. [more inside]

We're throwing a small holiday party for some friends, and we've promised to have at least two kinds of punch -- one with booze, and one without. But we always make the same sorts of punch over and over again, and I'd love some ideas! [more inside]
What great DIY food gifts are out there that can be made on short notice, don't contain pricey specialty ingredients, and can be packaged in cellophane or something similar, to be transported and given out as individual treats? [more inside]
We're thinking about making a quick visit to Manhattan the day after visiting my family in the Hudson Valley for Christmas. Is this a bad idea? If we decide to do it, what (other than the Midtown Xmas dept store display / Rockefeller Center sights, which I know about) would be good activities, including cheap but yummy lunch options, we might not have thought of. For reference, we visit NY a couple times a year, have done so by both train and car, just not usually at the holidays.
Last night after the final trampling of my boundaries, I asked my husband to please move out. I'm sort of adrift now. Hope me. [more inside]
We are having a solstice winter holiday open house where I plan to have two kinds of alcoholic beverages. I would like people to sing for their grog! Basically, I'm looking for short sing-able stanzas (spoken word, poetry, limericks, etc., would be totally acceptable) that I will put into a hat for people to select, perform their bit, then fill their cup. Help me fill the hat with good stuff! [more inside]
How does a happily married couple with no children and tenuous family ties enjoy the holidays? My husband and I have been married for 10 years, and we are happy with each other. It's everyone else we struggle with. [more inside]

I want to get to work ASAP on holiday gifts and am looking for your favorite DIY gift ideas that have fairly broad appeal. Would prefer they not be holiday themed, so that they're gifts people can enjoy year round, or at least longer than the holiday season. They will also need to be tailored to my shoestring budget, but still reflect a sense of 'expensive taste' (I like things to look and be nice, and know this can be done without spending much money). Details on my personal DIY and crafting skills inside, as well as examples of DIY gifts I've made in the past, inside. [more inside]
I want to observe the Jewish holidays without going to synagogue this year. Ideas for non-traditional ways I can commemorate the holy days? [more inside]
So I love giving gifts and, if I've committed to 'Giving Someone A Gift' instead of just 'Checking off the Box' I tend to put a lot of time and energy into them. However I've noticed that my pleasure in giving gifts is directly tied to how the recipient responds. MeFis, teach me to give unconditionally. [more inside]
What is the best city in Western Europe in which to spend Christmas? My spouse and I have decided to spend Christmas and New Year's in Europe! We will be going to Athens for New Year's Eve, but we aren't sure where we should spend Christmas, and the days leading up to it. [more inside]

My mother recently divorced my step-dad of 11 years and started dating a new guy about 6 months ago. Having a stranger in my family is causing my social anxiety to manifest when I go to visit on holidays and other times, and I don't know what is the best way to talk to my mom about this, and to what extent I should feel OK removing myself from these situations. I'm 26 years old but I have the feeling that the way I am acting is perceived as highly inappropriate and rude for an adult. She has been very understanding of my anxiety in the past but is now that it is related to her boyfriend, she's taking it personally and I'm not sure what to do. [more inside]

Both my niece (16 yrs old) and her father (my brother - 37 yrs old) conveniently "forgot" to tell me that her 18 year old boyfriend would be coming to our family Christmas. They will be staying in MY house and did not ask for permission for the boyfriend to stay, nor did they ask myself or my mother (Grandma) permission for an outsider to come to the family Christmas. The kid already has a plane ticket and I honestly don't believe it's his fault - I 100% blame my brother and my niece. So, it's sort of too late - he's coming. But what do I say to them to let them know that I am FURIOUS but it's the holidays so I'll do my bloody best to be HOSPITABLE and FUN and CHEERY but that this is seriously NOT OKAY with me? More gift advice needed! For a 10-year-old science geek with advanced computer and electronics skills for his age, I am looking for cool electronics project kits. He has an Arduino starter kit and has worked with that a lot. He has some soldering skills. He's into digital audio at the moment. He also has a Mac laptop and an iPad, in case it's relevant. Looking for things in the $75-150 range.
I can't stand my sister's boyfriend. He's coming for Christmas. They're inseparable. Now what? [more inside]
I'm likely going to be able to accept a new job (Yes, no resigning until I have a written offer, I know) but I am concerned about giving only 2 weeks notice during the holidays. For example, if I resigned 12/17 and my last day is 1/31, no one will be working for most of those two weeks. I supervise 6-7 other social workers and an intern; if I leave during a break I worry that they will not have A. heard about it and B. been able to sort of make any coverage plans. I know I'm not irreplaceable; I just don't want to burn bridges. [more inside]
I left my holiday vacation planning until the last minute and I'm at my wits' end as to where I can take a warm, relaxing vacation at any time between Dec. 21st and Jan. 5th without spending my life's savings. Any ideas or frugality resources? [more inside]

Do people generally go house hunting Thanksgiving weekend? I had planned on doing Thanksgiving on Saturday (it is the ONLY day we can), but now that our house is on the market, I fear we may have to forgo it this year.
My nephew is one and a half years old. (He's a real toddler, not a baby anymore--runs around all over the place.) His grandparents (and other gift givers) inundate him with toys, and his parents are starting to feel beleaguered by the well-meaning deluge. Since he's not quite old enough to be put out if I give him something purely utilitarian, my primary gift this year is clothes. However, I'd like to give him one gift that is purely for his enjoyment, and which can be used up (but isn't food), so it's not just another thing that sits on the (increasingly crowded) toyshelf after the holidays are over. Do such things exist? Can you think of suitable gifts that fit those criteria? A couple more thoughts inside. [more inside]
I have a relative with some long-time food and weight issues who just underwent bariatric surgery. Making meals with her, cooking and eating out have always been kind of fraught. We'll be having a family Christmas holiday at her house and I'm worried that the heavy emphasis on food will be stressful. Any tips? [more inside]
I'm on a diet that many (most) people would consider very restrictive if not downright odd. It's for health reasons, though I don't have any visible health or weight issues. I'm going to be spending several days with my boyfriend visiting his family over the holidays, and I'm dreading trying to navigate the weird food issues that will likely arise. If you are on a specific diet, how do you get around not eating various things that people are expected to eat (especially around the holidays)? [more inside]
This has been the Year Of Learning How To Make Ice Cream And Ice Pops. With certain holidays looming on the horizon, I have been searching to no avail, for a recipe for peppermint ice cream pops. I made a successful peppermint ice cream with crushed candy canes...but not sure if shoehorning the product of an ice cream maker into pop molds would really work properly. Do any MeFi Ice Cream Mavens have tips for me?
My girlfriend and I plan to go to Spain, leaving Christmas day and coming back a few days after New Years. We are interested in both activities and places it's just nice to be for a while. Spain is the primary destination here, but we're open to side trips into Andorra and/or Morocco. And, hey, how about the Baleric Islands? [more inside]

Apparently, the TripAdvisor app has 32 million users inside Facebook every month. But what's so good about it, that it attracts such a large user-base? Thanks for reading.

How do I deal with feeling ignored? [more inside]
A couple of weeks ago, I moved out of my marital home (details in my posting history). Whilst I seem to be doing okay, most people expect me to not be. In fact, they seem to expect a fragility and sadness from me that I'm not feeling even remotely. This has lead to some judgements from people that I could have done without. How can I navigate the sympathy of folks during the holiday season without having to pretend to be an emotional mess (which I'm not) and without suffering judgement from people who don't know the whole story (Which I can happily live without).
