I have to cancel last minute on attending a wedding. How to communicate?

The wedding is on Sunday, interstate. My not going is unavoidable as of this morning. A tremendous, epic, work emergency has developed. I got the news at 4.30am this morning. There is no way I can get through it without serious sustained time and effort during the period I’d planned to be travelling and interstate. What do I say to the couple and how do I say it? Helping a Friend in Need: What Are the Limits?

A close friend of mine is going through some difficult financial times. I want to help as much as I can--and I have for a while now. Dear MetaFilter,

Help. I am suffering from the most debilitating crush (on a guy) I have ever had. Interest is being returned; obviously not quite as strongly as I am feeling it inside. That's fine; the real problem is that my past relationships have been abnormally fast paced and for a variety of reasons this one is going to have to be of the sustained-effort variety, something I have no experience whatsoever with. How do I steadily build up this relationship and what is reasonable for me to expect from him (and him from me) as time passes? [more inside]

Live Chats That Are Responsive, Wide-Ranging, and Intelligent

Is there a live chat anywhere where one can ask wide-ranging questions and elicit intelligent response in real time? I'm looking for a place where folks blast in and out with hot questions/issues. Paywalled chats (hey, anything to help filter out ditzy noise) would be fine.

Help me remember this novel about a fake death

I've searched without success for a novel that I read and enjoyed sometime in the 90s or early 00s. As I recall, it was about a man who had to fake his own death (maybe he had accidentally killed someone?) and started a new life, working as a photographer. He caught something big on film (possibly a fire) and became an overnight sensation. The price for his works went through the roof but it brought him to the attention of someone from his old life and he had to disappear and start over again. He was trying to be a photographer, but since he no longer had any name recognition, no one was interested in his work. [more inside]
