So finally, I decided to take the bold step and move on to a bigger and brighter future (Hopefully, anyway!). I decided to divorce, on the grounds that I deserve better. [more inside]

I am somewhat of a hypochondriac; however, I have in the past few years experienced frustration with hearing other people. I often cannot understand the words that people say unless they are facing me. If someone doesn’t have a line-of-sight with me, it’s almost certain that I’ll have to ask them to repeat what they say. If I’m watching TV, I’ll sometimes put the captions on because I can hear most of what is said, but not all. Today I took a few online tests and scored that I don’t require hearing aids. I hear perfectly if I’m wearing headphones and listening to music or tv. I’m around 40 years old, and male. What else can be going on? If I don’t have a hearing problem, do you have any recommendations for mitigating what I’m experiencing?

My brother has been diagnosed with an acute form of leukemia, and is currently in the ICU. What we know is that he's not going to die tonight. He's got some life left in him. They're not sure about the precise form yet, that will take some time. But in the meantime, we have a problem: he's 31, recently unemployed, and uninsured. My family is far from being able to afford out of pocket health costs. And from all the doctors, drugs, machines he's been hooked up to in the past 10 hours, I know the bill is already creeping into the many tens of thousands of dollars. So my question to MeFites is: what are our options? How do we pay for this? We have very few assets, although I'm sure we'd sell the family home to keep my brother alive for a few more years. But apart from that, we've got nothing substantial. (I'm a graduate student, and my mother is a self-employed seamstress. My father is unemployed). Are there any gov't programs available? Can he go on Medicaid? Etc. I'm having trouble finding hard info on people in his particular situation (not a minor, not elderly, and diagnosed with cancer). Help!

In 6 weeks' time, my husband and I are quitting our jobs to go on a 2-3 month road trip around the USA before moving to Europe. I have an annoying tendency to go to bed very late, like 3 or 4 am and wake up at lunch hour. I've tried to change this by getting used to wake up when the sun comes up but I'm always breaking this habit and going back to sleep with the windows covered. I think I got this annoying habit because I procrastinate during the day and when the day comes to an end I don't want to go to bed because I didn't do what was most important during the day. So I try to do that important thing until like 4 am and them go to sleep. I want to break this cycle but it's so difficult!

I'm a newish mom who works from home. Mini-me sleeps through the night and we get plenty of rest, but I'm still utterly exhausted every day and it seems to be getting worse. I know it's time to start getting more exercise (I work from home now so I feel like I'm just on my butt all day every day) but I need delicious facts to convince my brain to go to the damn gym already. What type of exercise should I be doing and how long do I have to do it before I start to see an improvement in my energy levels?
I'm having a problem with my neighbors and I need your advice. They keep having fires even though the smoke is harmful to my mom's health. [more inside]

About a month ago, I spent the day playing games on my laptop and it got really heated. I felt it get super hot on my left thigh, more so than usual, but it was still tolerable so I left it there. Now I have a huge spider-like red mark on my left thigh. I've had red marks before from my laptop, but none this "spider-vein like" and none that persisted this long. It also seems to fade and darken depending on my body temperature. If I take a warm shower, it will get SUPER dark and fade to its usual redness after a few hours. It doesn't hurt. It's not irritated. It doesn't itch. It doesn't peel. It's just odd and ugly. Can I expect it to fade over time? Is it permanent? What should I do? Is there a treatment for this? The only thing I've done is alter how I sit with my laptop. (no more lap)

My boyfriend has been away for four months, and will be returning in just over three weeks, i.e. a little earlier than planned. I haven't been completely slothful while he was away but I have fallen into some bad habits: late nights watching TV, drinking too much coffee, getting stressed about work, half-assing my workouts, moping around missing him. My skin is sallow, my midsection dough-y, and I feel like my light has dimmed a little. I really want to be at my best to welcome him home. So, what can I do/eat/get done to me to get my glow back over the next 21 days? Do you have a secret eating plan that gets quick results? A magical yoga routine? A miracle cream? [more inside]

Timothy Ferriss’ book “The 4-Hour Body” has a section on boosting testosterone levels. His “protocol” for achieving a higher testosterone level includes ingesting various things like fermented cod liver oil, as well as twice-daily, 10-minute-long ice baths or cold showers. Mr. Ferriss doesn’t always explain how a thing that he recommends doing does what it’s supposed to do. Unfortunately, this cold bath/shower regimen is one of those unexplained things, because this inquiring mind wants to know! Does the hive mind know? [more inside]
I’m not sure what I should be expecting anymore. How I feel, energy-wise, especially in the morning, varies quite a bit depending on... well, so many factors I can't keep track of them all. My son is 17 years old, turning 18 at the end of July. In mid-May, he was hospitalized for two weeks when he became floridly psychotic -- his first episode. As he recovers post-hospitalization, I want to get some sort of guardianship in place so that I can step in and manage his healthcare and finances if he's unable to. I don't know, however, what kinds of options there are; I've heard the terms "healthcare proxy" and "power of attorney", but I haven't wrapped my brain around what those encompass, or what it would entail to apply for these things. One person says I need a good lawyer; another says I just need to get a boilerplate form from Staples and get it notarized. I'm in Massachusetts -- Boston/Cambridge/MetroWest. Hope me please! I feel like I have been constantly tired for the past 2 or so months. I am tired from the moment I wake up until I go to bed at night and often have trouble keeping my eyes open during the day. I also suffer terribly from headaches and general neck and shoulder stiffness which adds to the fatigued feeling. I have been to the doctor and everything appears to be normal including iron levels, and also I'm not depressed. I am feeling quite stressed in my life though, I don’t enjoy my work and I have an 8 year old daughter and a partner who travels a lot for work. I’m looking for a new job but these things take time and I haven’t seen anything that takes my fancy yet. Also it’s coming up the anniversary of the death of a loved one so I wonder if that’s having an effect. I know I need to get more exercise but I am not sure what I should/could be doing and I’m so exhausted its tiring just thinking about it. I eat relatively well and make/eat a lot of home cooked meals. I’m hoping for some ideas on how I can beat this tiredness and find some motivation and energy in my life. I’d also love to beat these awful headaches. Please help me wake up!
This year I made a resolution for healthier living and have been successful so far. Overcame a lot of bad habits compared to where I started. But I'm going on a cruise with a group of friends next month. From what I've been told it's going to be an around the clock buffet. I'm planning on using the gym but don't know how to deal with all of the food. I'm not going to be on the alcoholic drinks package and figure I can enjoy dinner that way. Breakfast and lunch are a free for all though. Any ideas for what my best options would be so I don't gain 15 by the end of the week.
I was sexually assaulted a few times and stalked/harrassed by an abusive, predatory and highly manipulative man who was in a position of trust to me. (We weren't in a relationship; he is nearly three times my age.) I am confused about where I should "be" or where I amin terms of getting over the events. Counselors and websites are quick to point out things like PTSD and rape trauma syndrome; they are suggesting things like EMDR and strongly hinting that I'm traumatized. I'm not convinced. Is it possible to actually be traumatized and not realize/recognize it? Is a "trauma response"... with panic attacks, flashbacks, and such... the only possible response to rape and harassment? Secondly: Is therapy always necessary to deal with this sort of thing? Or is it possible that I have/will get over it by myself? I don't want to pathologize myself. I don't want to create new problems for myself by going to therapy that I might not actually need. I wanted to ask metafilter because the counselors I speak to are obviously going to be somewhat biased in telling me that I am "traumatized". [more inside]

I have a mild case of vitiligo. While my insurance will cover dermatologist visits and Protopic (very expensive!), they won't cover a UVB lightbox machine like this one that my dermatgoligst recommended getting.. Before I pay out of pocket i'd like to hear how successful you found a UVB treatment to be - it's something like 1300-1600 dollars, and it's not something I want to buy if it hasn't been that successful.

How often is normal for otherwise healthy pets to have medical emergencies? [more inside]
I've always used my non-dominant hand to wash the middle of my back (or apply baby powder or sun lotion there, etc.), by sort of reaching up high from below and then rolling my hand around my thumb (pressed on my back) until the palm faces the skin. This seems to have been working fine for several decades (and I've been secretly pleased to be able to reach my "blind spot" that way). However, in the last few months I find that my shoulder pops as I'm doing this maneuver, and now I wonder if it's doing something bad. Since this is something I guess I do once or twice per day, I want to be sure I'm not setting myself up for a shoulder problem after a couple more decades of popping. Thoughts? tl;dr Is popping a joint bad in itself, and/or should I stop an action that causes a (nonpainful) shoulder pop a couple times per day?

I'm a dad and my oldest - now a pre-teen, who this year started at high school - is always tired and hates exercise. She was very active when she was younger but pressures of long school hours and homework have squeezed all that out of the calendar. Given all that, what's the best way I can help her to stay as fit and healthy as possible? What has helped for your kids? [more inside]
