I am just terrible at being a lady. All the usual Beauty Stuff, stuff that it seems like everyone else was either born knowing or learned as teenagers, is a giant mystery to me. I need, like, a checklist or something for being a presentable-looking grownup.

Asking for a friend. 2 years ago she lost 8 stone in weight through diet and exercise. She has maintained for a year using WeightWatchers and walking at least 100 miles a month plus cross trainer three times a week and some weights and crunches. Now she must have a serious operation which will leave her immobile in hospital for 2 weeks, immobile at home for 6 weeks, then gradually regaining mobility. Serious immobility, think skin graft type immobility. On the lower half of her body. She is desperate not to gain weight but there is not much support from the NHS etc. Has anyone been in this situation and managed not to gain too much?

I am working in a Autism lab this summer. I've been wondering whether it is a problem that so many psychological disorders are defined by symptoms and focused on treating symptoms. I think, and this isn't a particularly controversial opinion, that it is also important to investigate their causes. Are there any instances of really effective investigations of the cause/causes of psychological disorders (discussion open to any disorder)?

I've recently changed employers. My insurance from the previous employer terminated on 5/31. My new insurance starts on 6/23. I can get COBRA for the interim if need be. The question is, do I need it? There is a grace period, such that I don't have to decide until after 6/23, at which time, if I didn't need it during the period, I could save myself about $500. However, there is the concern of the 'pre-existing' condition, ie that period where I would not have insurance can somehow cause me to have 'pre-existing' conditions, whether indefinitely or for some period of time after 6/23 I don't know. The new insurance is
Presbyterian Health.
Can anyone advise?

I have been almost immune to most medications for as long as I've been taking them, particularly pain medications, anesthesia, anxiety medications, benzodiapines, and psychotropic drugs (this one is iffy because sometimes they don't work on people anyway). I feel literally nothing even on high doses. Wtf?

lost my health insurance. While it is possible I will be reinstated to
the plan I lost, which is provided in conjunction with my school, I need to be insured again ASAP, and I don't mind the possibility of doubling up on insurance for a short period of time. New Yorkers, do you know of any affordable (<$500 or so per month) plans I might be eligible for? I am a full time college student.

I have
De Quervain’s tenosynovitis. I have to wear a brace on my wrist for the next long while.
All the braces I've found are hideous and scream "SMPA is injured and has no style," which is taking me right back to that time when I was a kid in school and I'm
hating it (and don't get me started on the bowling jokes at work.)
Are there functional yet cute or pretty braces out there? What is the solution to this, besides "suck it up, you should have paid more attention to ergonomics?"

AskMe: we need help. My girlfriend just found out that her health insurance was terminated for non-payment (she thought she had paid it, and when I get home this evening we'll double-check our accounts to see what happened.) Whether the error was hers or the insurance company's, the company has stated that it'll take them 10-14 days to know whether or not they can reinstate the plan regardless. She has a pre-existing condition (ADHD), so consistent coverage is very important - and Ms. MP is starting to freak out. What's our next move, and how do we get through this?
