Help me reprogram the self-punishing part of my brain

At the end of a project, regardless of how the rest of the world feels about it, I am almost always sad and angry at myself about how it went. Sometimes I imagine myself being punished for imperfections, e.g. by being attacked and beaten to death with pipes because of bugs in submitted code. Other times I project this unhappiness and anger onto other people, e.g. imagining that colleagues are disappointed in me, until they actually say outright that they are pleased with how something went. "Asian" Flush Syndrome without flushing (or "Asian" lineage)?

I went to a gastroenterologist recently who tentatively diagnosed me with Acetaldehyde Dehydrogenase Deficiency (which causes the so-called "asian" flush). Should I get a second opinion? [more inside]

Healthcare for visitors in Toronto?

My cousin is visiting from the US and her joints are hurting a lot. Since she is a visitor she has no OHIP or health insurance here. For someone who is medically uninsured, I need more information on (1) x-ray centers and (2) medical labs (for blood work) in the Toronto-Mississauga area. Also, I would appreciate your advice on any (3) good, inexpensive health insurance plans you know about. If you can help me with any of these it would be a great help.

Needed: One Pair Of Big Girl Pants ASAP

I am one of those adults who had to emotionally take care of myself throughout my life due to mediocre parenting. Mom and Dad weren't hugely abusive, but they didn't seem to give a fuck about my brother and I. I'm coming out of a month where I went off my meds and I think I had a hypomanic episode followed by a giant crash. While I am now back on my meds and working with my therapist and pdoc, I am craving someone in my life who would take care of me emotionally. Someone who would understand where I was coming from and why I feel the way I do. The thing is, I do live in reality and know that's not possible for the immediate foreseeable future, if ever. What can I do to self-soothe and give myself that pampered feeling? How do I find someone who gets me? [more inside]

Is there a correlation between bl pr/puls rt and cardio exercise?

Had a good cardio exercise routine for four years. Blood pressure and pulse rate were healthy and constant. Stop the cardio routine and change to power lifting with occasional walking. Two years into the new (cardio free) exercise routine, blood pressure and pulse are the same. Health is good, diet constant, stress constant...all variables the same over the six year period.

Help me change my (already healthy) diet - for better joint health

Spouse has "condition" or does not?

Long Story not soo Short. Spouse had long history of sinus infections - always causing time off from work - lots of antibiotics prescribed. This past early spring Dr convinced spouse to have sinus surgery and that spouse would be back to normal in like two weeks. After surgery recovery did not go well and in addition to add'l sinus infections that needed more antibiotics spouse was also treated a couple of times with prednisone (nasal sprays, etc.). Things really never really improved - after a few weeks started experiencing shortness of breath and chest tightness. This was not at all present before surgery. Battery of tests have been performed - everything from lung clot to asthma to now cardiomyopathy have been tossed around. And lots of tests have been performed with lots of specialists. It has now been three months and we are no closer to finding out root cause. [more inside]

Research help on health disparities, and health equity terms and history

I am doing research on health disparities, and health equity. I would like to find out when the following terms were first used in the US, or in what fields/disciplines: Health Disparities, Health Inequities, Health Inequalities. I would also like to find references to historical works which talk about these concepts, although not using the exact phrases. The earliest mention of health disparities I have found thus far, with a reference librarian, is 1991 Whitehead. Although I know the term has been employed prior to this date. I also know that W.E.B DuBois has written about about health differences experienced by blacks in Philadelphia as compared to whites. And Engels has written about inequalities due to SES. However, I would like more sources, and the reference librarian and I are stumped. At this point, we are not finding what I am looking for in articles and therefore the reference librarian suggested I started looking in books, we are just not sure where to start. Thanks Hivemind! Any creative ideas to find this information are much appreciated!

Help Me Not Use My Partner's ADD As A Crutch.

My partner, who I love dearly, has Adult ADD, which means, among many symptoms, he gets "stuck" at work and has trouble transitioning out of work projects. If he is particularly engaged in work this means he does not come home until 10 p.m. or later. Sometimes he pulls all-nighters at the office. Spouses of ADD partners, how do you create your own routine in the midst of disarray? I don't want to assume he will fail -- i.e. not expect him home until after 11 p.m. -- but frequently that is what he does. It feels cold-hearted to assume I will be spending the evening alone, but if I am to make my own healthy habits, it seems I must make them solo. How do I create healthy habits in the midst of uncertainty? I want to encourage him to come home and spend time with me, but I'm aware that counting on him to be home and participate in shared activities sets me up to fail. Help me, hivemind (and any stories of thriving with an ADD spouse would be much, much appreciated!!). [more inside]

If I drink this, will I die?

I've heard that consuming products that have been smoked can increase cancer risk. I've recently started to regularly drink several cups a day of Lapsang Souchong, a smoked tea. I am an ex-smoker so I am concerned that my risk for certain cancers is already elevated. I am having difficulty finding information on if there are any potential cancer risks from drinking this tea and if so, if they are significant enough that I should consider cutting back the amount I am drinking.

Should I quit my temp job or am I just being fussy?

Last week, after 5 months of unemployment and desperation I managed to get a minimum wage temp job through an agency. On my first day I was incredibly excited to have finally found a job, but quickly realised that I hate it. It's a data entry position, inputting handwritten inventory data into a database. Basically the job is incredibly tedious, there is no variety, I'm doing exactly the same repetitive task for 7.5 hours a day. I'm basically working by myself in an office with other people and can't really talk to anyone because it distracts me. I can't really leave to take a break because the office door is locked and someone has to let me in every time. They are nice to me though and tell me to take regular breaks but there is nowhere to go. [more inside]
