I have a Metro shelving unit from the Container Store that needs wheels. The casters they sell are really expensive. Will another brand of caster work? Needless to say, I don't have a lot of experience with hardware. Thanks!
I just got home from 6 weeks of holidays, moved house, reassembled my desktop and when I turn it on the monitor doesn't get a signal. Is the most likely cause a motherboard failure? [more inside]

I came across this cute metal thing in a closet and have no idea what it's used for. It's like a three dimension capital I. A magnet doesn't stick to it. Dimensions are about .75"x.75"x1". It weighs 1.5oz, which seems heavy for its size and the fact that part of it is hollow. Photos inside! [more inside]
I have an Envy Dv7 laptop which I love. It is out of warranty, and a call to HP yielded no help as far as diagnosing the problem. I kept getting bounced from tech support to warranty to sales to someone else. The call lasted about an hour and eventually I had to give up as I had to leave for a flight. I'm looking to buy an unusual router bit to put in a CNC router which takes 1/4" shank bits, but the bit I've found is listed as having a 6mm shank. Can I expect that the vendor (or manufacturer) is just pretending at being metric and ignoring the 0.35mm difference in their listing, or are there incompatible metric router bits out there in the world?
Hi I want to find a SSD which is: -stable, long life, to be used as primary hard disk for my 5 years old Thinkpad X201 with i5 win7 -240G or above -no speed requirement as if it's better than my 3 years old Intel X25-M 120 GB -preferably no TLC -good price Thank you very much!

Recently, I noticed some pixels flickering on one of my monitors. At first I assumed it was a problem with the monitor until I noticed the flickering pixels scrolled when the image scrolled (i.e., it's always the same pixel in the image regardless where the image is on the screen). So then I thought it was an animated image, but if I drag the window over to the other monitor, the flickering goes away. [more inside]
My kids like drawing (5yrs up to 14yrs). They have played around with some animation software and computer art software as well as paper and pencils. I'd like to encourage them and give them tools to create awesome computer based drawings, but I don't know what those tools are. [more inside]
My Black and Decker cordless electric lawnmower (model number CMM1000, Type 4) has an adjustable handle held together by four bolts with screw-on knobs. Two of the bolts and knobs have been lost. "Universal handle bolts" (the only thing I can find at the hardware store or on Amazon) do not fit, and I can't find replacement handle bolts on the Black and Decker website. Where can I find the right kind of handle bolts and knobs for this mower? Photos of bolts and knobs inside. [more inside]
When moving this weekend, I broke my dresser (sad trombone). I tried to take the drawers out to make them easier to move, but they have these little brackets with ball bearings in them that are lubricated and make the drawer slide in the track. I tried poking around online but I can't figure out where to get new ones… or even what I'm looking for is called. [more inside]
My partner and I just moved into a new apartment in Queens. There's one small issue, and it's our peephole. It's missing the cover on the inside. Where can I get a replacement? [more inside]
I have a titanium plate that was used to fix a radial fracture about a year and a half ago. I've been experiencing symptoms that include episodes of extreme fatigue, as well as sore throat and general sick feeling for the past 6 months or so. Before that I would experience this sick feeling minimally starting shortly after the plate was surgically implanted in my arm. The plate is now useless and can be removed, I was wondering if anyone had ever experienced a similar reaction? All my other blood/urine test show that I should be in perfect health. Thanks for any help! Desperately trying to get to the bottom of this mystery!
My most pressing question: Do I need 8-inch pulls for the larger, 36-inch drawers? 7 inch? 12 inch? What fits that size best? What about the 30 & 24-inch drawers? Can I just grab one size and buy 40 of them and they'll all look good? [more inside]

I often work on my family's cars, however I don't have a garage and have to work in the driveway or in a rented (by the hour) garage with lift. In my workshop I have the tools organized on pegboards and in drawers. That's all fine and dandy, but I've come to realize that 90% of the time I use my tools I have to chuck them in tool bags and boxes and either bring them outside or to the aforementioned garage. I want a mobile storage system where everything has its place and I can see at a glance if something's missing. Like the pegboards, I guess, only portable. [more inside]
So. I guess they're finally going to pry XP out of my hands after all. As long as I'm updating, I'm thinking of getting a new desktop which would be used primarily for photo editing and storage. Advice? Special snowflake stuff inside. [more inside]
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 on 3. I get extremely little reception at home and a signal booster doesn't help. Is there a hardware solution, like a special case, wire, foil, etc I could use at home to boost my signal? homemade ideas and commercial ones welcome.
I'm a total hardware engineering noob who's getting into Arduino development. I have an Electric Imp connected to the Arduino via a shield, which works great. However, I've added another shield that conflicts with the pins that are used by the Electric Imp for software serial IO. The Imp shield says that I can cut a trace and wire a jumper to use hardware serial on two open ports instead. I've never done this before – can someone give explicit steps as to what I need to do? Hi everyone. I'm looking for a wireless replacement for my Logitech MX310 mouse, which has served me well for years. Many mice have extra buttons that can be assigned to various functions. The nice thing about the MX310, though, is that its extra buttons were symmetrical, so it was as easy to use left-handed as right-handed. Do you have a recommendation for a good, relatively inexpensive wireless replacement?
I'm searching for a size-accurate outline image of a unibody MacBook keyboard (basically an accurate diagram/wireframe). For this outline file, any format will work, although Vector (.ai, .svg, etc.) would be ideal. I've tried googling but the results tend to be photorealistic images with broad outlines, shadows, etc. I'm looking for a technical drawing like a blueprint. The goal is to make custom keyboard covers with multiple languages by die-cutting and laminating paper; these would be one piece, hence the need for precision. I'm thinking there must be an diagram of MBP keyboards one on the web somewhere... Any advice on where to find one would be highly appreciated. (As far as I know, the keyboard layout is the same for all models except the 11 inch/Air.) Thanks in advance.

Ok, so I recently purchased a pullup cage/station. You know, includes a side for dips, a pullup bar, etc. and is one large metal structure put together with nuts and bolts. Anyway, I think I enjoyed putting the darn thing together even more than I will using it. What other projects/hobbies can I work on/build/create using a tool box, wrench, other hardware type stuff etc. in my small to medium sized apartment that won't lose me my security deposit?

We are missing a pull/handle for one of the cabinets in our apartment. The landlord doesn't know anything about manufacturer or the source of the hardware. The inside of the drawers is labeled as "G* Grass" as a manufacturer but it looks like they make the inner mechanisms not the external hardware. Photo album here. Any ideas on how I can find a replacement? Thanks!

What would you call this thing in this razor handle kit? It's decorative chrome, and it's got a threaded hole and a rod. I'd like to order around 10 of them, but I only need that one part, and I'm having trouble figuring out what to search for.

I have a 650W power supply in my computer that I installed myself back when I asked this question (scroll through the answers on that for most system specs). I need recommendations for a person or service that can have a look at my mom's computer, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I would like for Geek Squad to be an absolute last resort. I live on the west coast, alas, and have already done what troubleshooting I can do remotely.
At my place of employment, I have been charged with physically securing our two servers. The decision has been made to bolt them to the concrete floor in a cage. I don't know how to shop for a server rack. We have an old one that they're on now, but it's an open rack, without sides or locks. I need one that's more of a cage, to keep people without the key out. It'll have to fit at least 8U worth of servers, and also accommodate a midsized tower somehow, and be 1000mm deep minimum. How do I shop for this? I can't find any information on whether any of the racks I'm looking at are bolt downable.
The rain barrel in my garden has a plastic flex clip on it to hold the hose that's attached to the barrel. Or rather it did. Half of it broke off months ago. I've checked Home Depot, Canadian Tire and Rona, and none of them carried a replacement clip. The rain barrel was installed about five years ago courtesy of the City of Toronto as part of their drainpipe disconnection program, so I don't have the option of going back to the supplier for it. Does anyone know where I can get a suitable replacement clip on the internet?
I'm beginning to take photographs again, and my apartment has no real easy space to set up my currently-decommissioned desktop PC. My present laptop is super low-end and it's a horrible drag trying to do anything with photos on it. Please recommend a minimum spec replacement - a few more details after the cut. [more inside]
Can I simply physically replace the 1366*768 LCD in my HP EliteBook 8440p with the 1600*900 part and have the laptop autodetect the new screen and show the proper resolution? Or is there extra logic or connectors or dongles or whatever in the main body that must also be modified in order for the display to work, (or maybe it Just Won't Work)? Put simply, is HP 594090-001 plug-and-play? [more inside]

I think the time has come for me to jump the iPhone ship. The announcement of the Google version of the Galaxy S4 at I/O was the clincher. But I am not 100% sold on the idea, mainly because the S4 is an ugly brute, but also because I fear for the apps and innovation I will miss. Help me out, specifically in finding a worthy replacement for my beloved Mailbox app. [more inside]
We get the keys to our new house on Wednesday. Hooray! We're trying to come up with a list of things that we, as long-time renters, might need to get for the house. I'm not talking about furniture or anything like that, but rather stuff like a lawn mower, a ladder--that kind of thing. Some of the stuff will become obvious when we need it, of course, but is there a list of things that no homeowner should be without?
