What science experiments can I do with a balloon full of carbon dioxide?

This Halloween I did some Halloween candy science experiments with my nieces and nephew. One of the experiments we didn't get to do (but soon will) is: Pouring Pop Rocks into a bottle of pop will make all that pent-up carbon dioxide escape but not fizz over. If you put the rocks into a balloon, then fit the balloon over the bottle's mouth and let the rocks fall in, it inflates the balloon with carbon dioxide. But what can I do with a balloon full of carbon dioxide? ...Is it a stupid idea to inhale it to see if I get a funny voice? [more inside]

Help me find a recording that scared the hell out of me as a kid.

So, it's Halloween and I'm thinking about ways to frighten my child. I've just recalled a recording my parents had when I was young that made a strong impression on me. I don't even know how I'd start googling to find it, so I'm hoping a description will jog someone's memory. [more inside]

What's an adequate symbol?

For Halloween this time, my wife, kids, and I will don our alter-egos as made-up superheroes and villains. I will be the acceptably nefarious Dr. Adequate. What would be a good symbol to put on my shirt? I thought maybe an equal sign or a standard distribution curve. Any other ideas? Is there a simple symbol of pictogram that screams "Adequacy" to you? Thanks!

Where to buy a parasol in Portland?

I am going as a Victorian character for Halloween and need a black lace parasol by tomorrow night. I'm looking for something in this style. As usual, I've left it too late to order online. Halloween pop up shops don't have this. Any idea where else can I find this type of parasol in the Portland, OR area? I've already been to Cargo and Uwajimaya without success. Thanks!

If they exist, looking for a bag of plastic crows

I remember going into almost any toy store or even drug stores and being able to buy a big bag of the little green plastic army figures for 2-3 bux. I am looking for something in the same vein. I am looking for little plastic crows. Anywhere from 2-5" in size. I figure with Halloween season abound, that it would be easier said than done. If they even exist? I have done all sort of google searches with different combinations of words and can't find anything even remotely close to what I want, again, if they exist. For a project of mine, really looking to stay within 50 cents to a dollar each at most. any shoppers out there can guide me in the right direction? thanks

Lazy Halloween filter: Where to buy a Luchador mask in chicago?

So of course I've left this to the last minute, but I've hit upon a good costume for my build: Luchador in a suit. . I've got the cheap suit covered, but I can't imagine walking around for hours in an ill-fitting luchador mask, so I'd much rather go somewhere where I can try a few on. Where can I get an authentic-ish Luchador mask in chicago that'll let me try a few on?

What is this song about ghost towns, trains, and murderous barbers?

Last year, I was at a Hallowe'en party and heard a song that I liked. Unfortunately, it was playing on a seasonal streaming radio station and hasn't proved easy to Google, so I never did get an artist or title for it. A year later, it's still haunting me - or my inability to look it up is. The song was in English, likely recorded in the 21st century, and sung by a man. I think it had an acoustic Americana sound. From what I can remember, it involved a traveller arriving in an unsettling town by the railway tracks, upon which ran a ghost train. The man goes to the local barber's for a haircut and a shave, and the song culminates with the barber cutting his throat just as the train blows its whistle. I believe the final implication was that the traveller was now riding the ghost train, or was now a resident of the ghost town. Despite the involvement of a barber, there were no explicit references to Sweeney Todd. Does this ring a bell for anyone?

Would this Halloween costume be offensive to trans* people or allies?

I have an idea for a costume for our Halloween party that involves my not only dressing in drag but also explicitly calling out the fact that a guy dressing in drag shouldn't be as big a deal as it often is. Seems like a good idea to me - but as a white, cis, straight male I want to be sure I'm aware of any offense I might give to less privileged groups before making a final decision on whether to go through with the costume. What camera would Leonard Shelby use in 2013?

I was thinking about dressing up as Leonard Shelby from Memento for Halloween. The stumbling block is trying to find the right camera to complete the costume. Does anyone know if any of the films that are still being produced are compatible with any camera that still looks roughly like the old style of polaroid camera* and wouldn't cost more than $50 for the camera and $2 per photo. Alternatively, does anyone have a suggestion on a good way to make something that looks like a convincing fake polaroid photo? * i.e. not like the new 300 series polaroid cameras.

Looking for a specific Halloween song

Back in the day, Zacherle had an annual Halloween radio special in NYC; in my day—late 80s to early 90s—it was on WCBS-FM. There was one song he played that I haven't found anywhere else. It featured a vampire (who was very likely Zacherle himself, but I can't swear to that) with several cheerful backup singers, speaking/singing about being "overdrawn at the blood bank." Anybody recognize this and know where to find it? [more inside]

Medieval scholarly costume on the cheap.

Halloween is coming, which means it's costume time. This year I've decided to go with a medieval theme, so that I can also have something to wear to the Renfaire which comes around in November. I have a vague idea that I'd like to dress as some kind of wandering scholar or scribe (it would allow me to wear glasses and is a nod to my academic real-life persona) but I don't really have a lot of ideas for how to make that awesome (or even really recognizable). I would like to keep the costume more on the realistic/historical side of the costume continuum than the funny/cheesy side, as much as is reasonable. I also am pretty broke, so I want to keep the Buying of Things to a bare minimum. I am happy to scrounge and to craft -- my main handicap there is that I do not have access to a sewing machine, nor do I even know how to use one, but I am otherwise pretty resourceful. How can I build a good costume around this?

So the kids want to go as Minecraft characters on Halloween. They've ordered masks so that they can go as Steve, Enderman, and Creeper. (Don't ask me, I don't know either.)
