I’m looking for those terrible candies that you resented in your Halloween loot bag as a kid. I need to buy some, ideally online. Must ship to Canada. My Google-fu is failing me, only turning up out-of-stocks from Halloween. There has got to be somewhere that stocks them year round. What store/site is this?
I accidentally purchased a child's Halloween costume instead of an adult-sized one when ordering online. I used one piece of the costume (hat), so I can't return it, but the rest has never been worn, so I'd like to donate it. Googling turns up donation drives from 1-2 months ago, but nothing in November. DC MeFites, can you think of anyone who would take this? Preferably in DC proper, does not need to be tax-deductible.
OK, I have done some googling, but no good finds yet -- I need help with last-minute Halloween costume ideas using a short pink wig and my own glasses... I'm average weight and pretty short.
I bought a tube of silver cream makeup for my halloween costume weeks ago! I thought I was so prepared, but now I'm realizing when I apply it to my face, it doesn't really seem to dry. I'm not close to any costume stores, unfortunately, but I do have a pretty well stocked drug store nearby, what should I be putting on on top of this to ensure that my face is not wet all night? Or alternatively, have I just not been waiting long enough-- how long should this stuff take to dry?
I just finished a trial run of my Donald Trump Halloween face makeup (like this) and I'm pretty happy with the results. However, given my personal opinion of the man, I don't want my costume to be some sort of homage, so I'd like to add a funny or ironic twist. Puns are acceptable. [more inside]
I picked up a hideous hard plastic fanged ghoul mask at a central California valley supermarket for .49¢. It looks like this fellow, only more colorful. I want to "be" this thing for Hallowe'en, but I don't want to spend the night with gross slimy plastic on my face, especially as there are no breathing holes. How can I easily suspend a traditional plastic mask an inch or three in front of my face? It has big eye holes and tiny side holes to hold an elastic head band, but is otherwise a solid sheet of plastic.
I found a ridiculously cool vest at the thrift for $1.99. Help me turn it into a Halloween costume. [more inside]
This Halloween animation about a kind witch and two children aired on broadcast television sometime in the early 1980s. Because I was only 6 or 7-years-old, I remember very little. Please, help me this identify this show. [more inside]
I'm trying to find a place to purchase some special effects contact lenses like the type here. Due to the proximity to Halloween I'd ideally like to purchase them locally in San Francisco. I tried calling Kryolan and asking for leads, but they had none. Neither did my optometrist's office. I'd also happily look at an online retailer that offers expedited shipping.
This is a weird question about a fantasy my son has about "cooking" with Halloween candy. For months he's been talking about making "Sweet Stew," a "recipe" he made up in which the Halloween candy is ground up in the food processor and then mixed with peanut butter. Is there any real recipe for something we can make with Halloween candy? [more inside]
My Halloween costume is this awesome bear hood, which I would like to make more awesome with a little customization. Suggestions welcome. [more inside]
Hey all! Looking for an easyish Halloween costume for a cisgender straight couple. Complications? Blond beard for the dude, short hair for the woman, and glasses for both. [more inside]
Should I include a very realistic looking gun as part of my halloween costume when I go to a party that will be primarily for children? [more inside]
I'm going to be Pearl from Steven Universe for Halloween, and I have all my costume parts accounted for except for her sword. How can I recreate the sword cheaply and quickly? [more inside]
My Halloween costume is just a regular old undead sort of demon: black eyes, horns, and a very white face. My intent is to have a scary pale, almost paper-white visage, but I want it to look less thick/flat and more 'natural' than standard clown grease paint. I have no makeup application experience whatsoever. Can you help me figure it out? [more inside]
My son wants to be "The King" from the movie Cars. I can't find any pre-made costumes for this guy. I'm not crafty. How? [more inside]
I want to make some foam superhero masks for my kids, that follow the face pretty closely, but don't have to be super accurate. I don't want to go too complicated, so most special effects tutorials are out, besides they (8 and 4 years old) aren't inclined to sitting still while I tinker. [more inside]
Help me find slices of the particular flavor of cheesy Halloween movie that our kid likes. [more inside]
I'm pretty sure I'm going to have a black eye for halloween. Any ideas for movie/book/tv characters with black eyes for a costume?
There's a Halloween-themed bouldering/costume competition coming up, and I need MeFi's costume ideas. [more inside]
I'm finally working with people that like to celebrate and have fun, including a Halloween costume party w/ prizes! I find myself feeling very competitive, I want to win! Unfortunately, nothing in the Halloween stores fit me. Looking for suggestions on the nerdy side. Contest categories: best dressed & scariest costume [more inside]
I recently quit smoking. Yay! For my Cruella De Vil costume for Halloween, I've already got a cigarette holder and I'd like something to put in it that, you know, looks like a cigarette. The thing here is that it absolutely, 100%, no wiggle-room cannot have any nicotine. What are my options here? [more inside]
I'm looking for ideas for fancy dress costumes that incorporate a set of ear defender earmuffs, which I need to wear in order to deal with amplified music and crowded environments. The earmuffs look like very large headphones. I'd like gender neutral/masculine costumes if possible, but really all ideas are welcome. [more inside]
It's October, so I'd like to give my Grandmother some spooky mysteries to read. I've given her quite a few gothics, and those aren't difficult to find, but she now prefers the young adult books I've been getting for her. I know her taste, because we talk a lot about which books she's enjoyed the most, and I know she won't like anything too dark, too serious, or too gross. Lighthearted (but not too silly) mysteries with Halloween themes are what I'm looking for. [more inside]
I've created a paper mache Darth Vader helmet for my son, and it needs only painting...but the weather's supposed to be rainy for the next few days, and he needs it for Friday. [more inside]
My SO and I love watching Halloween-themed stuff this time of year. What are some awesome Halloween episodes of TV shows that are available on Netflix, HBO Go or Amazon Prime? Assume that we're not looking for movie recommendations (got that covered) and the following series are mainstays/have been seen: [more inside]
Trying to find a fun, and spooky, board game for several adults to play on Halloween. Not a Ouija board, please. [more inside]
My five-year-old son is interested in sewing (he's interesting in construction and design, in general). I am not much of a sewer, but I could probably cut out something from a simple pattern and stitch it by hand. (No machine). How can I indulge this with him, given that I have limited skills and he's five? [more inside]
My 7-year-old daughter's favorite books right now are Louise Erdrich's Birchbark House novels about an Ojibwe girl named Omakayas. She wants to dress up like Omakayas for Halloween. Last year, she went as Laura Ingalls Wilder. However, I feel like it isn't okay in this day and age for a white girl to dress live a Native American for Halloween, particularly in a city where so many real Ojibwe live. Am I right? If so, why? What should I tell her? For her, this is just about adoring her favorite character.
This Halloween, I'm going to bake myself a Halloween cake, light some candles, turn the lights off, and listen to recordings of classic horror stories read by masters of the form. Need to beef up the story list! [more inside]
I suck at costumes. I've been invited to a Halloween party from a person with whom I really want to be a closer friend, and she loooooves Halloween. I need help with a costume/makeup. [more inside]
Looking for any new creepy sounding tracks for my annual Halloween mix. New, or new to you; original songs; cover songs; or even soundtrack selections work. (If a recommendation has appeared on a previous AskMeta thread for Halloween mix tunes, less candy for you!)
Here's one photo. Leather black sandals, loose cotton khaki pants, simple cotton apron, white tank top undershirt. All these are straightforward. I need help with... [more inside]

My 7-year-old daughter is intensely into makeup. She went as Cleo De Nile (A mummy queen with gold lame sandals) last Halloween, and as a Vampire Princess the year before. I think she'd like to learn about special effects makeup. I recently saw a young girl's work who had done some amazing things, including a great looking third eye on her forehead. Is there a particular set of books, or kits, or websites you can recommend?
For the first time ever in my life, I have a giant display window at the front of my house, and I want to do the biggest, baddest Halloween display ever! But I have no idea what to do! Help!! [more inside]
I'm putting together a seminar on how to better trick or treat... I'm not looking for safety tips. I need tips on how to get better, bigger candy, from picking neighborhoods to whichever costume solicits the most stuff. Tips on how to have "more fun" while trick or treating, whether you're 5 or 45. Practical and borderline legal suggestions accepted.
you probably now know left shark from the superbowl halftime show. I need to be that shark. help me be that shark. [more inside]
Starwars.com used to have free printable star wars masks. Of course I waited last minute to pull a costume together under the assumption that I would print a Chewbacca mask like I have done in the past. Is there a way to retrieve this pdf?
This Halloween weekend, I would like to surprise my wife with a daytrip to Mexico to see a traditional Día de Muertos observance (we live in San Diego county). I would like your help, MetaFilter. What are some good places, within a couple hours drive, for us to do so, and is there a specific time that would be best? Is this even an appropriate thing to visit as (visibly non-mexican) tourists? Help me plan this.
How do I make my cockroach costume "sexy" in a really obnoxious way. [more inside]
I am a female with short dark blonde hair. It suddenly occurs to me that I need a Halloween costume, but I hate wearing wigs and I'm not going to color my hair. What can I dress up as that makes use of this hairstyle? We've already got Claire Underwood, Switch from The Matrix, Twiggy, and Patricia from the movie Breathless on the list--so we don't need those. [more inside]
I'm looking for the spooookiest videos on YouTube. Or Vimeo. What are the scariest videos you've watched online?
This year my partner and I are planning a scary movie all nighter on Halloween, after the trick or treaters are gone. I would like to get about 4-5 scary movies that are not gory ( no Chainsaw Massacre), no zombies and no first-person documentary style horror movies. Anything else is a go, but would prefer movies made in the last decade rather than vintage stuff. Help me scare the pants off my man! Mwahahah!
For Halloween this year, my 11 year old son is being Calvin of Calvin and Hobbes. We've sorted out his costume, but I am having a hard time figuring out what to do with his hair. My son's hair, (seen here) is much longer than Calvin's. How can we style his hair, which he has no desire to cut, into a style that still evokes Calvin?
We are going to a Halloween party where the theme is "sinister circus." My husband wants to go as a wicked roustabout. He's all set with a belt full of rope and carabiners, old-fashioned, tattered clothes and oil smudges on his face. He even made up a batch of blue rock candy (which if you're a Breaking Bad fan you'll get.) Problem is... [more inside]
I'm putting together a Halloween marathon party this weekend, with a few horror movies (about evenly split between good and cheesy selections), and lots of video interludes in between that speak to a sense of pre-2000 horror/VHS/halloween nostalgia. I need your help on the interludes. I'm finding it hard to pick the exact vibe I'm looking for, but for examples: [more inside]
I feel sure that one of you has got this. I know in the Buffyverse that demons generally avoid Halloween. But where is this concept is explained? Do you have a cite for it? I checked the Buffy wiki but there's no citation.
