I'm putting together a seminar on how to better trick or treat... I'm not looking for safety tips. I need tips on how to get better, bigger candy, from picking neighborhoods to whichever costume solicits the most stuff. Tips on how to have "more fun" while trick or treating, whether you're 5 or 45. Practical and borderline legal suggestions accepted.
you probably now know left shark from the superbowl halftime show. I need to be that shark. help me be that shark. [more inside]
Starwars.com used to have free printable star wars masks. Of course I waited last minute to pull a costume together under the assumption that I would print a Chewbacca mask like I have done in the past. Is there a way to retrieve this pdf?
This Halloween weekend, I would like to surprise my wife with a daytrip to Mexico to see a traditional Día de Muertos observance (we live in San Diego county). I would like your help, MetaFilter. What are some good places, within a couple hours drive, for us to do so, and is there a specific time that would be best? Is this even an appropriate thing to visit as (visibly non-mexican) tourists? Help me plan this.
How do I make my cockroach costume "sexy" in a really obnoxious way. [more inside]
I am a female with short dark blonde hair. It suddenly occurs to me that I need a Halloween costume, but I hate wearing wigs and I'm not going to color my hair. What can I dress up as that makes use of this hairstyle? We've already got Claire Underwood, Switch from The Matrix, Twiggy, and Patricia from the movie Breathless on the list--so we don't need those. [more inside]
I'm looking for the spooookiest videos on YouTube. Or Vimeo. What are the scariest videos you've watched online?
This year my partner and I are planning a scary movie all nighter on Halloween, after the trick or treaters are gone. I would like to get about 4-5 scary movies that are not gory ( no Chainsaw Massacre), no zombies and no first-person documentary style horror movies. Anything else is a go, but would prefer movies made in the last decade rather than vintage stuff. Help me scare the pants off my man! Mwahahah!
For Halloween this year, my 11 year old son is being Calvin of Calvin and Hobbes. We've sorted out his costume, but I am having a hard time figuring out what to do with his hair. My son's hair, (seen here) is much longer than Calvin's. How can we style his hair, which he has no desire to cut, into a style that still evokes Calvin?
We are going to a Halloween party where the theme is "sinister circus." My husband wants to go as a wicked roustabout. He's all set with a belt full of rope and carabiners, old-fashioned, tattered clothes and oil smudges on his face. He even made up a batch of blue rock candy (which if you're a Breaking Bad fan you'll get.) Problem is... [more inside]
I'm putting together a Halloween marathon party this weekend, with a few horror movies (about evenly split between good and cheesy selections), and lots of video interludes in between that speak to a sense of pre-2000 horror/VHS/halloween nostalgia. I need your help on the interludes. I'm finding it hard to pick the exact vibe I'm looking for, but for examples: [more inside]
I feel sure that one of you has got this. I know in the Buffyverse that demons generally avoid Halloween. But where is this concept is explained? Do you have a cite for it? I checked the Buffy wiki but there's no citation.
My nephews and I seek your assistance in kicking butt in a pumpkin carving contest. Pumpkin shaped snowflakes inside. [more inside]
Trying to track down a Halloween-y children's (?) book of puzzles and such. Details within. [more inside]
I have two kids (5 & 8) who are very excited about Halloween, but we are going to need to spend the evening of the 31st driving fro Philadelphia to Boston. I would like to stop at a couple of places on the way for them to do some Trick-or-Treating (yes, they will be in costume in the car - sorceress and cobra). So, I would love suggestions for some neighborhoods/streets that would be good places to trick or treat. Ideally in CT off of the Hutchinson River Parkway, Merritt Parkway, or I-84; or else off of the MassPike. [more inside]
I'm passing out glow sticks and glowy spiders in lieu of candy for Halloween. A Facebook friend posted a link to the Teal Pumpkin Project about kids with food allergies and Halloween treats. So, yay, my treats are allergy-safe! But my house is definitely NOT a pristine allergy-free zone. Will this be an issue? I don't want to inadvertently poison some poor trick-or-treater. [more inside]
I want to be Vampire Luis Suarez for Halloween. I have the soccer kit, I have the fangs, I have the soccer ball. I just need some good fake blood to put around my mouth - blood that won't stain a polyester soccer shirt. [more inside]
I'd really like to pull off a Travis Bickle costume for Halloween, but I'd really really like to do it without having to shave my head. Help me find the perfect mohawk wig/prosthetic/something! [more inside]
Despite not being a religious person, I've always enjoyed finding and reading Jack Chick tracts, and I always enjoyed getting them at Halloween as a kid. Are there any small, Chick-like comics appropriate for kids that aren't religious, perhaps on spooky historical topics or that are just fun adventures, that I could give away along with candy for Halloween this year?
I got a sweet plastic cauldron for a pre-Halloween party we're having and I'd like to serve punch out of it, but it's not watertight and I don't know that the plastic is safe for serving drinks. What's the best/easiest/cheapest/surest way to make this cauldron a punch bowl? [more inside]
I've been trying to locate some "white out"-style special effect contact lenses (the kind that make your iris and pupil a milky white, like Storm in the X-Men films when she uses her powers), but I've been having a hard time finding something that fits my prescription. Does anyone know of a reputable store that sells these kinds of SFX lenses with corrective power? [more inside]
For Halloween this year, I'd like to go as Tilda Swinton's character "Social Services" from the movie Moonrise Kingdom. Can anyone suggest online places to purchase the hat, pantsuit, shoes and a wig? Difficulty: I'm a 6'2" (slim) man. Photos for reference: one two. [more inside]
What are some good fandom-related Halloween treats or tricks for an artsy foodie fangirl? [more inside]
So, my kid wants to be a zombie for Halloween. Fine. But stuff that is too scary gives him nightmares. I do not think he can deal with most of the zombie masks you can find in costume stores. And also I don't want to scare the little kids that will be at the places we are going. [more inside]
This year for Halloween I will be part of a group going as the main cast of Clue. Help me pull off an amazing Wadsworth (i.e. the butler). [more inside]
I'm looking for creepy couplets, spooky sonnets, and other Halloween-y poems to share with younger children. Shorter is better, and I'm not interested in the overtly gross. [more inside]

Since my most recent haircut has made me look a bit like Mason Verger off NBC's Hannibal ( proof) I've decided to make it my Halloween costume this year. I want to focus on his first appearance in the white fur-trimmed coat. ( Like this ) What the hell is he wearing and where can I find a reasonable look alike within the month? Something cheap enough that I don't have to work it into my daily wardrobe to justify buying it. [more inside]

I really like the idea that I've seen on a number of t-shirts like this one, and want to create on myself using my own jack-o-lantern face. Does anyone know of a tutorial or action, or could even walk me thru the steps to create this effect with any shape?
This Halloween I did some Halloween candy science experiments with my nieces and nephew. One of the experiments we didn't get to do (but soon will) is: Pouring Pop Rocks into a bottle of pop will make all that pent-up carbon dioxide escape but not fizz over. If you put the rocks into a balloon, then fit the balloon over the bottle's mouth and let the rocks fall in, it inflates the balloon with carbon dioxide. But what can I do with a balloon full of carbon dioxide? ...Is it a stupid idea to inhale it to see if I get a funny voice? [more inside]
So, it's Halloween and I'm thinking about ways to frighten my child. I've just recalled a recording my parents had when I was young that made a strong impression on me. I don't even know how I'd start googling to find it, so I'm hoping a description will jog someone's memory. [more inside]
What's the best way to make a fire costume? What kind of store should I go to buy what I need? [more inside]
For Halloween this time, my wife, kids, and I will don our alter-egos as made-up superheroes and villains. I will be the acceptably nefarious Dr. Adequate. What would be a good symbol to put on my shirt? I thought maybe an equal sign or a standard distribution curve. Any other ideas? Is there a simple symbol of pictogram that screams "Adequacy" to you? Thanks!
I am going as a Victorian character for Halloween and need a black lace parasol by tomorrow night. I'm looking for something in this style. As usual, I've left it too late to order online. Halloween pop up shops don't have this. Any idea where else can I find this type of parasol in the Portland, OR area? I've already been to Cargo and Uwajimaya without success. Thanks!
I remember going into almost any toy store or even drug stores and being able to buy a big bag of the little green plastic army figures for 2-3 bux. I am looking for something in the same vein. I am looking for little plastic crows. Anywhere from 2-5" in size. I figure with Halloween season abound, that it would be easier said than done. If they even exist? I have done all sort of google searches with different combinations of words and can't find anything even remotely close to what I want, again, if they exist. For a project of mine, really looking to stay within 50 cents to a dollar each at most. any shoppers out there can guide me in the right direction? thanks

So of course I've left this to the last minute, but I've hit upon a good costume for my build: Luchador in a suit. . I've got the cheap suit covered, but I can't imagine walking around for hours in an ill-fitting luchador mask, so I'd much rather go somewhere where I can try a few on. Where can I get an authentic-ish Luchador mask in chicago that'll let me try a few on?
A friend of mine is looking for "awesome, sexy, scary, dark, Halloween-type songs that [she] can do burlesque to." She's thinking along the lines of the theme song from True Blood, although she's already done a routine to that song. So please, you masters of mixes, give us your scary-sexiest songs.
Remember The Wet Look? Well, I need The Drowned Look. For this year’s Halloween costume contest, my buddies and I are going as the ladies of Shakespearean tragedy, and I drew Ophelia. I’m not doing Sad or Mad Ophelia, though; I’m doing recently-fished-out-of-the-creek Ophelia, and I need some advice. [more inside]
Last year, I was at a Hallowe'en party and heard a song that I liked. Unfortunately, it was playing on a seasonal streaming radio station and hasn't proved easy to Google, so I never did get an artist or title for it. A year later, it's still haunting me - or my inability to look it up is. The song was in English, likely recorded in the 21st century, and sung by a man. I think it had an acoustic Americana sound. From what I can remember, it involved a traveller arriving in an unsettling town by the railway tracks, upon which ran a ghost train. The man goes to the local barber's for a haircut and a shave, and the song culminates with the barber cutting his throat just as the train blows its whistle. I believe the final implication was that the traveller was now riding the ghost train, or was now a resident of the ghost town. Despite the involvement of a barber, there were no explicit references to Sweeney Todd. Does this ring a bell for anyone?
I'm going as a Singapore Sling for Halloween. I'm looking for a necklace that resembles ice. Can you help? [more inside]
I have an idea for a costume for our Halloween party that involves my not only dressing in drag but also explicitly calling out the fact that a guy dressing in drag shouldn't be as big a deal as it often is. Seems like a good idea to me - but as a white, cis, straight male I want to be sure I'm aware of any offense I might give to less privileged groups before making a final decision on whether to go through with the costume. I am completely stumped this year for Halloween, and my fall back idea has been commandeered. Slightly nerdy ideas are encouraged, and while I am usually okay with being completely unsexy and going as a dude, I'm kind of burnt out on that route this year. Any ideas? [more inside]
Going as Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford in Blade Runner) for Halloween. I found a trenchcoat and toy blaster on Ebay that are close enough. Can you help me find something similar to his shirt and tie? [more inside]
My experience has been that party games are usually pretty lame. We're having a Halloween party for about 40 people, though, and I like the idea of having miscellaneous "areas" set up throughout the house (it's a big house) with various activities to help keep things light and entertaining...
