Looking for recommendations for hair salons/stylists in the Boston are that are good with short women's styles, without veering too much in the direction of "old practical lady" on one hand and "edgy butch punk rocker" on the other. [more inside]
Three or four times over the past four years, I have had the haircut of my dreams. But for reasons I genuinely don’t understand, no matter how many pictures I bring into the salon of what I’m after, it has been extremely difficult to keep getting the same haircut. So I turn to the hair professionals and other styling experts of Metafilter: please help me become fluent in stylist-speak so that I can explain exactly what I want! [more inside]
I have been thinking about getting my haircut a la Gone Girl, but don't know what kind of day-to-day work/styling/upkeep it would need. more details inside. [more inside]
Is it rude for me to go to a Black hair salon as a white woman to get my hair cut? I have curly hair. [more inside]
We have an Oster Classic 76 hair clipper that the wife uses to cut my (thick, no-joke) hair and we love it. We have a full set of guide combs but only ever use 3 of them (#4, 5, and 6) for my head and I'm considering getting those size equivalents (0A, 1, and 1A I think) in blade form with the hopes of making the job easier for her. Could you help me understand if this is dumb because I might have this all wrong and not be doing any good buying said blades?
Tell me about your excellent barber in the greater Gardner/Leominster/Fitchburg area who keeps up with current trends! Criteria: Knows what the hell I'm talking about when I tell them I'm trying to achieve a "slicked back undercut". [more inside]

I usually cut my own hair with a Wahl Super Taper with a #3 (10mm) comb, but the edges of the cut are always pretty bad and using the next step down #2 (6mm) is a bit too drastic of a length change. Where can I buy a #2.5 (8mm?) comb attachment?
Since moving to a new part of the country, I can't seem to get the haircut I want. How do I communicate exactly what I want, despite reluctance from my stylist? Snowfalkes ahead. [more inside]
I'm looking for hair stylists/salon recommendations in Brooklyn or lower Manhattan that would be a good place to get an undercut. [more inside]
I'm a male with curly hair, and I feel extremely anxious whenever I get my hair cut. I just don't know what to tell my hairdresser! I prefer to cut my hair fairly short and then grow it out for a few weeks/months without having to worry about it, but I don't really know how to precisely explain that other than "uhh... short?" [more inside]
Well I took your advice from last time and relaxed my principles - I started blow drying and flat ironing and applying various goos at various times. And that's okay but only as long as my hair has been recently cut. So what I need now is advice about how to communicate with my hair stylist that I really do want it flat, flat, flat, flat. Last time she seemed to think she was talking me out of making a huge mistake. [more inside]
In a few weeks I'm going to be in San Francisco for about 12 hours for a connecting flight. It will be just after a long no-shave camping trip and just before a set of client meetings that I have to be presentable for. At the moment I'm thinking about keeping the beard, so I'm looking for recommendations on shops (and specific barbers) who can take something from "just walked down from a mountain" scraggly to presentable without taking it all off. Flexible on location - anywhere from San Francisco down to Palo Alto. [more inside]
What are some questions you ask yourself when you decide on a cut and color situation for your hair? I'm curious about what any gender considers--things like how flattering to your face, how it curls in this one specific place, that it makes you look younger/older, that your workplace requires a certain look...etc. What motivates you to get one hairstyle over another? [more inside]
I just had a haircut today, and I told my hairstylist not to use the "razor comb" because anything to do with razors in a public area make me nervous, especially with things like HIV and Hepatitis going around. Well, she used it anyway and brushed the back of my neck with it to trim off the fine hairs. I found out afterwards that she doesn't speak good English, so she didn't know what I was saying. I'm going to Paris this week. I need a haircut. Something fashionable. I barely speak any French. Where should I go, and how do I handle the language barrier without leading to a terrible haircut or uncomfortable situation with the stylist?

Where can I get the best, finest, most fussy and superlative men's straight razor shave and a haircut in San Francisco?
My long hair is a casualty of a recent ICU stint. I am ok with going short and starting over. But... There are complications. 1, I am still in hosp, and when I leave will be in a skilled nursing facility. 2, I moved here two days before ending up in hosp and have no friend base. 3, I have $40. I am hoping to find someone who would be willing to work in those confines to cut and style my hair, who does have experience. The nurses have no suggestions. I don't even know where to start, and am over whether by enough life changes in the past three months to last a lifetime. I need this to be as simple as possible. Please forgive not doing all the requisite searches, limited by tablet and energy. Thanks for suggestions on who might be able to help.
I have a few questions about hair salon etiquette... [more inside]
I've had the same problem with every pair of hair clippers I have ever owned: When I start running them through my hair (especially in the back), they work fine. Then, at some point, they hit a patch of hair that makes the motor modulate so that it sounds higher-pitched and faster. When the clippers are in this state, they don't cut properly until the motor ramps back down again to their normal speed. What's going on here and how can I stop my clippers from doing this? Hey Internet. I want to get my long, thick, curly hair cut for less than $100, preferably closer to $50, in NYC, Brooklyn, or NJ (northern/central). Help? [more inside]
I am looking for short hairstyles that are super low maintenance AND works with wavy coarse hair on an oval face. I have a weirdly shaped head, so no to going bald. Link to pics please!
I'm having one of my sporadic SOMETHING MUST BE DONE frenzies and booked a haircut for the day after tomorrow but still haven't decided exactly what to do. I need help dialing it in! I have: A (very) round face, thick and straight Asian hair, length but a desire to go short, bangs that are overgrown but not enough to be not-bangs. I want: Killer shorter hair that feels modern and sleek and does not look stupid on me. GO. [more inside]

I have NEVER had my hair professionally cut or styled. It's way past time, but (like many things in life) the longer I wait, the harder it is. I also have a very long list of special requests. What should I do in order to have hair I love again? [more inside]

I've just moved to Boulder from NYC and I'm looking for an experienced, no-frills men's barber that can handle a classic tapered haircut. I have had great Russian barbers in NYC but this is CO, and I can't find much. Looking for a barber that can handle an all scissors cut and one that is relegated to guard clippers. I'm willing to travel to a nearby area but would prefer not having to make the trip to Denver.
I don't want another salon cut but I do want shorter hair. How do I do it? [more inside]

I've been cutting my own hair for a couple of years - I have no hair cutting skills, I hack at it with a pair of scissors until it doesn't flop into my eyes anymore. During that time I've been a student, and now I've just finished uni, and started thinking that maybe before I start volunteering/going to job interviews where I'll need to make a good impression, I should get a professional to have a go at it. I'm living on the west side of Cleveland after working abroad for some years. I had a good stylist while I was abroad, but since coming home to Cleveland my hair cuts have been butcher sessions. Please help me find a good men's stylist around Cleveland so I can get a decent haircut for the first time in a while. I'm willing to drive a bit if the recommendation is solid.

I got a bad hair cut today. I need the words when I go to get it fixed to make sure it doesn't happen again. [more inside]
I have thin, wavy hair. Since I was about twelve, "doing my hair" has consisted of washing it and leaving it down, or, on a not-shower day, putting it up in a ponytail. One of my goals this year is to learn how to have nice-looking hair when I want to. Help! [more inside]
I've seen variations of a hairstyle on various stylish-seeming women that is sort of halfway between a pixie and a bob. It has the layers of a pixie, but is a few inches longer--maybe a little less than chin length? It does not have the traditional cut-straight-across-the-bottom look that a bob has. Bangs may or may not be part of the equation, but they are usually longer and sideswept. The hair almost seems to be shaped so that it hugs the head as it curves down into the neck, rather than hanging down in drapes. [more inside]
Is selling or donating my hair worthwhile, or should I just get a damn haircut like normal people? [more inside]
For a bunch of reasons (some good, some bad) I have the next two and half months totally free. I don't have to do a thing, I have no reason to make any more money and I've got oceans of time, a nest egg of savings, and a gym membership. Previous times like this I've focused on making my skill-set or apartment better/fancier, but now I want to focus on myself. No creative projects, no learning and growing, just pure, unabashed vanity. What can I do in two and half months to get all kinds of pretty? Ideally during the day. [more inside]
Looking for a place or a particular stylist who will cut my queer hair and who may even offer suggestions about style. Snowflakes inside. [more inside]
I'm a guy with fairly long hair (between chin and shoulder length) who wants to try something a little daring and, yes, possibly very stupid. I've been thinking about getting one side buzzed short- not shaved- while leaving the rest long. How should I request this? What is that even called? Details and stuff inside. [more inside]
