Where can I get the best, finest, most fussy and superlative men's straight razor shave and a haircut in San Francisco?
My long hair is a casualty of a recent ICU stint. I am ok with going short and starting over. But... There are complications. 1, I am still in hosp, and when I leave will be in a skilled nursing facility. 2, I moved here two days before ending up in hosp and have no friend base. 3, I have $40. I am hoping to find someone who would be willing to work in those confines to cut and style my hair, who does have experience. The nurses have no suggestions. I don't even know where to start, and am over whether by enough life changes in the past three months to last a lifetime. I need this to be as simple as possible. Please forgive not doing all the requisite searches, limited by tablet and energy. Thanks for suggestions on who might be able to help.
I have a few questions about hair salon etiquette... [more inside]
I've had the same problem with every pair of hair clippers I have ever owned: When I start running them through my hair (especially in the back), they work fine. Then, at some point, they hit a patch of hair that makes the motor modulate so that it sounds higher-pitched and faster. When the clippers are in this state, they don't cut properly until the motor ramps back down again to their normal speed. What's going on here and how can I stop my clippers from doing this? Hey Internet. I want to get my long, thick, curly hair cut for less than $100, preferably closer to $50, in NYC, Brooklyn, or NJ (northern/central). Help? [more inside]
I am looking for short hairstyles that are super low maintenance AND works with wavy coarse hair on an oval face. I have a weirdly shaped head, so no to going bald. Link to pics please!
I'm having one of my sporadic SOMETHING MUST BE DONE frenzies and booked a haircut for the day after tomorrow but still haven't decided exactly what to do. I need help dialing it in! I have: A (very) round face, thick and straight Asian hair, length but a desire to go short, bangs that are overgrown but not enough to be not-bangs. I want: Killer shorter hair that feels modern and sleek and does not look stupid on me. GO. [more inside]
I'm a mid-twenties woman who grows her hair out long and cuts it all off every few years. Tomorrow I'm cutting it all off again. How do I get the stylist to respect my masculine haircut wishes? [more inside]
Where can a man with longish hair in NYC go for a decent haircut? [more inside]
I have NEVER had my hair professionally cut or styled. It's way past time, but (like many things in life) the longer I wait, the harder it is. I also have a very long list of special requests. What should I do in order to have hair I love again? [more inside]
I am graying, and I love it. But the new texture of my hair is making me crazy. Is there anything I can do about it? [more inside]
I'm getting my haircut. I don't want to say "just trim it and leave it the way it is". I also do no not know what I want, and I have some anxieties that I want to try and ignore. Can you help me? [more inside]
I've just moved to Boulder from NYC and I'm looking for an experienced, no-frills men's barber that can handle a classic tapered haircut. I have had great Russian barbers in NYC but this is CO, and I can't find much. Looking for a barber that can handle an all scissors cut and one that is relegated to guard clippers. I'm willing to travel to a nearby area but would prefer not having to make the trip to Denver.
I don't want another salon cut but I do want shorter hair. How do I do it? [more inside]
What hairstyle should I get? I’m looking for a haircut that’s somewhere between femme and androgynous, good for my face shape, easy to maintain, and possibly involving shaved sides. [more inside]
I've been cutting my own hair for a couple of years - I have no hair cutting skills, I hack at it with a pair of scissors until it doesn't flop into my eyes anymore. During that time I've been a student, and now I've just finished uni, and started thinking that maybe before I start volunteering/going to job interviews where I'll need to make a good impression, I should get a professional to have a go at it. I'm living on the west side of Cleveland after working abroad for some years. I had a good stylist while I was abroad, but since coming home to Cleveland my hair cuts have been butcher sessions. Please help me find a good men's stylist around Cleveland so I can get a decent haircut for the first time in a while. I'm willing to drive a bit if the recommendation is solid.
I'm seriously considering chopping my hair short again, but it's a tough decision as my hair grows slowly. I'd love some help and opinions!! [more inside]
I got a bad hair cut today. I need the words when I go to get it fixed to make sure it doesn't happen again. [more inside]
I have thin, wavy hair. Since I was about twelve, "doing my hair" has consisted of washing it and leaving it down, or, on a not-shower day, putting it up in a ponytail. One of my goals this year is to learn how to have nice-looking hair when I want to. Help! [more inside]
I've seen variations of a hairstyle on various stylish-seeming women that is sort of halfway between a pixie and a bob. It has the layers of a pixie, but is a few inches longer--maybe a little less than chin length? It does not have the traditional cut-straight-across-the-bottom look that a bob has. Bangs may or may not be part of the equation, but they are usually longer and sideswept. The hair almost seems to be shaped so that it hugs the head as it curves down into the neck, rather than hanging down in drapes. [more inside]
Is selling or donating my hair worthwhile, or should I just get a damn haircut like normal people? [more inside]
For a bunch of reasons (some good, some bad) I have the next two and half months totally free. I don't have to do a thing, I have no reason to make any more money and I've got oceans of time, a nest egg of savings, and a gym membership. Previous times like this I've focused on making my skill-set or apartment better/fancier, but now I want to focus on myself. No creative projects, no learning and growing, just pure, unabashed vanity. What can I do in two and half months to get all kinds of pretty? Ideally during the day. [more inside]
Looking for a place or a particular stylist who will cut my queer hair and who may even offer suggestions about style. Snowflakes inside. [more inside]
I'm a guy with fairly long hair (between chin and shoulder length) who wants to try something a little daring and, yes, possibly very stupid. I've been thinking about getting one side buzzed short- not shaved- while leaving the rest long. How should I request this? What is that even called? Details and stuff inside. [more inside]
My wife cuts my hair but it's never quite as good as a good barbershop haircut. What are some things she and I may not be doing properly or can do differently/better to improve the results? Many [non-dandruff related] snowflakes inside. [more inside]
I don't want to take my toddler to the salon every three months, can I realistically trim her wispy bangs myself? Can you talk me through it, or what online resource can you recommend? [more inside]
My father is getting married next week in Berkeley and I thought he, my brother and I could get a shave and a haircut the day before as a special wedding male bonding kinda thing. [more inside]

I got my haircut yesterday and asked for some bangs. I now look super derpy and remind myself of that Peter Pan meme guy. It just looks bad. [more inside]
Haircut question 678: I'm specifically wondering about websites where you can upload a picture of your face and try it out with different styles. I have seen early versions of these but surely the technology has improved. I'm happy to pay if it's a good site. Alternatively, female haircut ideas for a round face and super thick straight hair. Currently about shoulder length, happy to go medium or shortish.
So I should start out by saying I have awesome (brunette) hair. It's shiny, healthy, straight, not to0 thick or too thin, it will pretty do whatever you coax it to do, and every hair dresser I've ever seen has complemented me on my great healthy shiny "easy" hair. The problem is that I've never learned how to care for it on a daily basis. So while it looks fantastic coming right out of the hair dresser, when I care for it, the part is out of place, it's tucked behind my ears, it doesn't stay in place etc. etc. The other problem is that the hairdresser will spend an HOUR blowing drying it with a round brush to make it look that way. I do not have anything like an hour in the morning to spend on my hair. So, I would like to get a haircut like this: And then I would like tips, tricks, and products for caring for it on a daily basis that will not take long in the morning. I really have a fantastic hairdresser, so I don't think the problem is him, it's me. Thanks for any tips!!
I am new BU Med student and just moved to Boston- in the Roxbury neighborhood. I need to get my hair cut and styled and my lip waxed on the cheap, ASAP. I am used to getting these service done in Chicago in different ethnic areas for super cheap. So where to go and how can I get there from the Roxbury area or Med campus? Thanks!
Where in or around North County San Diego can I find a hair stylist who will cut my hair in a short, edgy style without fretting over how short is too short for a woman, or what hairstyles suit a tall body or a oblong face? I'd love to find somebody unafraid to have fun with my hair, who has experience doing more alternative-looking cuts. [more inside]
I've had the same hair for a few years now and am looking for a change--however, I'm completely stuck. I'm thinking about bangs to help give structure to my face, but curly hair and bangs don't easily mix, do they? I'd like a style that's compatible with both straight and curly hair. All length suggestions welcome, but I feel my face won't suit a super short 'do. If you have pictures of your own great curly manes, please post! Pictures after the jump. [more inside]
Bostonians/Cantibridgians/Somervillagers: Know anywhere to get a WICKED AWESOME haircut for around 60 bucks? Bonus points for being near inman. Not looking for anything crazy-fashion, just something easy to take care of, chic, doesn't require blowdrying, bonus points if it has a slimming effect. (if you have anything specific to suggest along these lines, send me a picture!) Don't mind waiting a bit for an appointment, but probably not more than a month.
If you've got curly hair, can you explain to me your process for going to the hairdresser and coming out with a haircut you like? [more inside]
Asking for a gentleman without a metafilter account: Can you recommend a stylist in Manhattan who specializes in, or at least does an excellent job with, male curly hair? [more inside]
Looking for someone who does great short cuts for women. I'm driving to my 20-year college reunion this weekend, and have just received a truly terrible haircut. Seriously, it's basically a mullet. The only cure is going short. If you can recommend someone in or around Harrisonburg, VA who's great with short hair, please do! (Alternatively, I'll be passing through Charleston, WV and Columbus on my way, so they're options too - but ideally I'd like to find someone near me.) Thank you!

A couple of weeks ago, my wife took mercy on me and told me that my hair looks ridiculous. The words she used were "it's dated" and "sometimes I cringe when you go out like that." OK then, message received. Here's the problem: I have no clue what I would want it to look like. I can fit what I want into three very broad parameters: [more inside]
