Asking for a friend: "I am more that a little embarrassed at how much time I spent trying to figure out what shampoo/conditioner I used to use in the late '90s. It came from the grocery store; the kind I got was in a light blue cylindrical bottle, with this weird cap where you pulled the whole thing up but the middle stayed down. It smelled SO GOOD -- a faintly citrus, faintly marine smell. If I could find it I would pay like $30 on ebay for a bottle just so I could reverse-engineer that smell.
" Any ideas, Hive?...

It's getting cool again and I'm thinking that maybe I should start drying my hair before work so I don't show up with wet hair. But I hate hair dryers. Can I use something like this
instead of a hair dryer? How do I do that without ruining my hair? [more inside]

I'm looking for books featuring old wisdom about skincare and haircare. Recipes and advice. I'm thinking orris root powder, muslin cloths and buttermilk, brush your hair 100 times before bed. From the English-speaking world or otherwise. Either written in previous centuries, 20th century, or recently. Even 1950s-60s if they don't rely too much on commercial products. There were a lot of books about grandma's beauty routine printed in the 1970s. Can anyone suggest some classics or particularly good ones?

Note: there should be absolutely no mention of Dr Bronner's or the oil cleansing method.

I am very vain and particular about my hair, which I wear in a parted pompadour. I would like to carry a quality gentleman's comb, possibly with a case. Something with a vintage, classy look that elicit admiration and envy. Can you help me find this comb on the internet or in Chicago? [more inside]

[Haircare filter] Looking for a gentle shampoo that won't irritate my scalp. I've used Aubrey Organics shampoos
for decades. I like that they use simple ingredients without petroleum derivatives. But lately my scalp is getting irritated.
Looking for simple shampoo that is gentle, but cleans well. I don't like synthetic fragrance. A light essential oil scent is ok. I'm looking for a formula with few ingredients. A long list of botanicals will likely include something I'm sensitive to. My skin doesn't tolerate shea butter.
My hair is normal to oily.

My friend is a young Indian woman in her early 30's and this NYC weather is killing her hair. She has long, naturally black thick-stranded (coarse, really) hair and her problem is that it's frizzy. Really really frizzy. Okay, ladies, how can she make her hair more healthy? Anti-friz shampoo isn't working here. Grease isn't either. It's been a life-long problem, too. Advice from Indian women welcome :D

I've quieted my PC by getting rid of loud fans. As my s.o. wakes me up with an old, loud hair dryer every morning, I wonder if a company has done the same with that appliance. Are there any quiet hair dryers available that still do the job? Money is no object if there's something out there that puts out heat, dries hair in a couple minutes, and is say, under 60db.
