Seeking a Boston-area hair stylist who's good with growing out gray hair

I have decided to go gray after coloring my hair for many years, but my current hair stylist is against it. Worse than that, I don't think she knows much about techniques to help me through the process as gracefully as possible. I'm hoping to get suggestions for stylists in my area who can help me through the long, awkward, painful process. [more inside]

What differentiates clipper blades and clipper guide combs?

We have an Oster Classic 76 hair clipper that the wife uses to cut my (thick, no-joke) hair and we love it. We have a full set of guide combs but only ever use 3 of them (#4, 5, and 6) for my head and I'm considering getting those size equivalents (0A, 1, and 1A I think) in blade form with the hopes of making the job easier for her. Could you help me understand if this is dumb because I might have this all wrong and not be doing any good buying said blades?

Tipping in a booth rental situation

My hair stylist is moving from a commission job to a booth rental situation. I have always heard you are not expected to tip the owner of a salon -- because he/she is not working on commission. Does this apply to booth rentals as well? What about in this special snowflake situation? [more inside]

Daughter hates having hair combed; shouldn't we cut it?

My nearly 5-year-old daughter has shoulder-length hair that is thin and prone to tangling. It's beautiful but she screams bloody murder and/or gripes the entire time it's being combed. Every time. I would like to have it cut shorter and/or make significant changes to the combing routine, but it's a sensitive topic, and I think my wife is a little too attached to her having longer hair than she needs to. Best shedding tool for Labrador?

My Labrador sheds a lot. We live in a warm climate. What's the best tool for deshedding? Bonus points if it can be used on long-haired and short-haired cats as well. (Also, how do I post pics of these furry little bastards?) FWIW: I've used a shedding blade (the metal loop kind) and a Target brand knock off Furminator. Both are kind of meh. I also use the Furminator shampoo and conditioner.

Men's hair product and technique for thick, mostly-straight hair

I got kind of a funny haircut (not on purpose). It's like the mid-'90s "butt cut" but extra long in the front. I have no idea what the stylist was thinking, as she did the two things I specifically told her not to do: no butt cut, as I have a serious cowlick that accentuates that look, and nothing that requires product, as my hair is very thick and everything I have tried is absorbed and useless within two hours. So what can I do? Technique and product recommendations? [more inside]

More hair help needed

Well I took your advice from last time and relaxed my principles - I started blow drying and flat ironing and applying various goos at various times. And that's okay but only as long as my hair has been recently cut. So what I need now is advice about how to communicate with my hair stylist that I really do want it flat, flat, flat, flat. Home hair colour and covering minor grey streaks: doable or foolhardy?

I have some minor grey streaks at the front of my head of dark hair. I don't want to dye the rest of my hair, or even cover all my grey. I just want to colour these particular grey hairs. Dry hair, just around my face

I have curly, dry hair, which I shampoo rarely and condition frequently (as per curly girl). The two locks of hair on either side of my face are MAD dry and damaged (probably from being in a ponytail all summer ... They're also two shades lighter than the rest of my hair from sun).
