Importing contents of one HTML file into another, from a CD?

Plain old HTML: is there any way to get the contents of HTML file A into HTML file B without using frames, iframes, PHP or other server side stuff (it's for on a cd), and just copy-pasting the contents of one into the other? So something like an import function (perhaps done with javascript)? I need a page with a TOC + content and want to make it pretty, so frames are a no. [more inside]

HTML issues

HTML crisis: I use relative URLS on my blog because pages archive in different files- for example, a tag for a JPEG would be /images/image.jpg inside image tags. Because I use that first slash to make the relative URL work, all image tags are broken when you type or link to my site without a "www" in the url. In other words, "www.mysite.com" shows all the images fine, but "mysite.com" loads the site with little red x's everywhere. Solution? [more inside]

Solutions for In-Program Help and Demos for Health Industry Backend Apps?

I have been asked to develop in-program help and demos for an IT company (working in the Health Industry, backend stuff).

a) For the help system, what's the best approach? I know there's windows help format, html help and other (more) proprietary stuff, but have no experience with any of them (I have plenty of experience with HTML, CSS and Flash). What help format / application would you choose? Portability and easy updating are pluses. End users will be mostly on Windows.

b) For the demos I'm thinking RoboDemo, but wonder if there's anything easier, or opensource, or some other reason to choose it instead of R.D?

how do I build web pages people can annotate

I want to create a website which visitors can "annotate" with something more than a simple commenting system. Basically, I'm looking for Flickr's photo annotation capabilities, but for html documents instead of jpegs. My instincts say this could be accomplished with some fancy CSS and javascript, but I would prefer not to start from scratch if something already exists. Any ideas?

WebDesign: CSS and FireFox

So I have this home page. It looks pretty good (which is to say, it looks like I intended) in Safari, and passable in Internet Explorer. But in FireFox the CSS completely dissapears for some reason, so everything just comes up in a big unstyled pile. So in trying to find out why this is, which I have not done, I came to wonder: Is there a place on the web that has information about the differnces between browsers and how they render various bits of HTML, CSS and so on?

Managing JAlbum

I know, I know -- not another web photogallery AskMe question, but: I've actually settled on the gallery itself. I'm using JAlbum. Having made the choice, though, I'm left with two questions:

1. JAlbum makes nice galleries, but doesn't create a top-level index page. (I could hand-code it, but my wife will be doing most of the updating and I don't want her to have to go mucking around in HTML.) The easiest solution, I'd think, would be just to reformat the directory listing into something attractive -- all I really need to communicate to the user is descriptive folder names and upload dates, but I'd prefer to make something more handsome than the standard Apache page. Can anyone recommend a particular PHP file system manager or other solution?

2. JAlbum's auto upload is ridiculously slow -- better just to FTP it. When JAblum makes a gallery, though, it includes a lot of stuff I'm not using -- icon sets, borders, etc. It's not a ton of space, but I'm going to uploading a lot of these galleries, and it'll add up. Is there a programmatic way I can stop JAlbum from including all this, instead of weeding it out before each upload? (I'm using the BluPlusPlus skin.)

Software to debug HTML

It would be nice if there was some favelet, firefox extension, or web-based app that would 1) scrape an html page for all the spans and ids on the page 2) compare this list to the stylesheet and 3) point out the elements that aren't in use any longer.

I haven't found anything like this, and I'm wondering if anyone else has.

CSS Spacers

Hey, CSS Cowboys - spacer help needed! Look here. This is a simple box with three different backgrounds in three fields with no content; the first two need to be exactly 100 pixels tall, and the last one needs to be 200 pixels tall. I am making this happen with transparent spacer .gifs, but I want to eliminate them, if possible. I've tried a couple of things (spacer tag, fer example) that work in Mozilla but not IE; and a couple of things that work in IE (span tags with height declaration, fer example) but not in Mozilla. Padding doesn't work well in either for exact spacing. Can you help me conquer space, the final frontier?

Website Builders

This is kind of an embarassing question. Is there any decent cheap or shareware software for building basic websites? I know how to edit HTML pretty well, and even tinker with CSS to get it to do what I want, but I don't know how page structure/architecture really works. I want to build a very basic website where I can have an inaccessible image/media folder (to serve to my Blogger-hosted blog, which I'll eventually migrate to a subdomain) and just a few pages of text. All I get from the controls where my domain name is hosted (GoDaddy) is an IP address and a login. After that it's up to me, evidently.
