Tumblr recently switched out their flash-based music player with a new, more mobile-friendly one. That's good, except the new one is devastatingly ugly and has totally different proportions. I'm not even sure it's displaying correctly - the arrow is off-center, the text looks wonky. I have been trying in vain to find ways of fiddling with its attributes, but the ones exposed are very limited. Has anyone else noticed this problem with the look, and has anyone had any success in customizing it?

I'm hoping to put together a relatively simple website on which to put various stories and essays my friends and I are writing. I'm aiming at imitating old journals and newspapers (
like this), fairly simple, mostly text. Do you guys know any great examples of this type of layout online that I could scope out, and if I wanted to start prototyping it myself relying as much as possible on CSS and javascript, what would be some resources I should consider?

I'm trying to make my image links in a div start at 0.8 opacity, and on hover, bump up to 1 opacity. This works fine - until I also introduce text links to the same div. Then, the 0.8 starting opacity applies to the text as well, making it look weird. Any way to make it apply to the image links only?
Thanks.

Recommend a crash self-education course in becoming a web designer for a graphic designer with 15 years of print experience. Books, websites, etc. Emphasis on correct/efficient process for development + industry standards (i know I should know CSS backwards and forwards...what else?) and general tips all appreciated!

Web-Design-Filter: I am looking for a free (or very cheap) and easy to use Content Management System that I can use to set up a private, dynamic blog, content and community space for multiple users. I would be willing to look at
Wordpress type software bases, but would like to integrate something of the functionality of lifestream systems like
Facebook and
Sweetcron/
Tumblr.

Two webcoding questions:
1) What is the web coding name for hiding/revealing text without reloading a page? For instance,
on this page you can see "Continue Reading" and "Hide this News Article" as
toggles. They appear to be doing it with javascript. What is this
called and are there simple free coding samples available for me to
use? 2) Are there any free plugins that I can use on a blog to play
audio samples? Something similar to what's used in MuFi or Wordpress's
audio streamer, but without needing Wordpress. Thanks!

I'm starting up a business that revolves around my artistic and digital editing skills, but I'm totally clueless about web design and programming.
I want something that looks fairly professional but in that kind of haphazard, artsy way. A lot of artists' online portfolios have a lot of white space and are very stripped down, almost with this kind of collage look. That's what I'm going for.
How do I find a designer? I can't spend more than a few hundred bucks because I'm still a poor student, but I want somebody talented who knows what they're doing.

[ Flash Filter ] Ok. So after
sketching out my client's site, they have informed me that they want the white cross (with the blue gradient) to basically fade, from the outside in to the center, and perhaps have a little sparkle and 'ding' noise as the animation completes. As far as I can come up with, flash is the only way this is going to happen. My question is, how am I going to make this work?
