CSS with dynamic content. I'm trying to create a web page using CSS and text pulled from a database, so that it looks like this: http://www.blogfucker.com/junk/css_help.gif. "Image 2" is simply floated left. Very simple to do with static content. But this is for a client who will only be able to edit the text, which will be entered as a single block of text. How do I throw a floated image in there so it shows up roughly in the middle of the page? I've considered writing a script to count the number of paragraphs (or even characters) and dividing by two, and throwing it in that way. But I feel there must be a simpler way.

I am a total html novice. I have ten pages, "page1.html" through "page10.html" that I have already created. I want to have a link ("slide show!") on my home page "index.html" that, once clicked, creates a slide show of "page1" through "10", showing each page for 5 seconds until finished (never showing any page more than once.) I also want the order of the pages to be random (ie showing the slide show in a different order each time the link on "index" is clicked.) Is this possible? If so how in the heck can I do it!?!?

On community blog sites like Metafilter, a lot of bandwidth seems to be consumed by redundant requests like previewing comments or checking for new ones where the entire page is reloaded. So when in the thread on Google Maps, mosch mentioned the HTTPRequest javascript object, that got me thinking. Are there any ways to write code that can cut down on resending the same data. Some kind of 'diff' method for HTML?

I need to send an HTML-newsletter via e-mail. I have it ready as an html file, but need a good program to turn it into an email and send it. It would be nice if I could also insert an alternative plain-text (with links. if that's possible). Not sending it as HTML is not an option (client's wishes, etc.). I only need to send 1 copy of it, so mass sending isn't an issue. I am on XP Pro.

I have been asked to develop in-program help and demos for an IT company (working in the Health Industry, backend stuff).

a) For the help system, what's the best approach? I know there's windows help format, html help and other (more) proprietary stuff, but have no experience with any of them (I have plenty of experience with HTML, CSS and Flash). What help format / application would you choose? Portability and easy updating are pluses. End users will be mostly on Windows.

b) For the demos I'm thinking RoboDemo, but wonder if there's anything easier, or opensource, or some other reason to choose it instead of R.D?

I know, I know -- not another web photogallery AskMe question, but: I've actually settled on the gallery itself. I'm using JAlbum. Having made the choice, though, I'm left with two questions:

1. JAlbum makes nice galleries, but doesn't create a top-level index page. (I could hand-code it, but my wife will be doing most of the updating and I don't want her to have to go mucking around in HTML.) The easiest solution, I'd think, would be just to reformat the directory listing into something attractive -- all I really need to communicate to the user is descriptive folder names and upload dates, but I'd prefer to make something more handsome than the standard Apache page. Can anyone recommend a particular PHP file system manager or other solution?

2. JAlbum's auto upload is ridiculously slow -- better just to FTP it. When JAblum makes a gallery, though, it includes a lot of stuff I'm not using -- icon sets, borders, etc. It's not a ton of space, but I'm going to uploading a lot of these galleries, and it'll add up. Is there a programmatic way I can stop JAlbum from including all this, instead of weeding it out before each upload? (I'm using the BluPlusPlus skin.)

Basic HTML question re. using tables for no frills layout: if I have a centred table with just one or two TR rows with say 3 TD cells in them, and keep sporadically adding stuff to the cells in the bottom row so that they become humungously long, will something eventually break? Anyway, are tables cool for layout? Or should I be thinking about learning something else?
