Work Goals?

I am supposed to come up with a few personal and a few team goals for a meeting at work. I am someone who always leaves the "Objective" section of resume blank because this stuff is alien to me. Anyone have any insight into management expectations with this stuff? [more inside]

How to not give myself away to HR?

Interviewing for a new job. HR has asked- in writing (email) - for current salary (which is low, in part due to location in low-cost-of-living state) and salary expectations. Because they want this in writing, it doesn't seem like I can obfuscate with the kind of answers that are usually suggested for in-person interviews. Any suggestions? Details within. [more inside]

Is there a minimum sample size required to use the bell curve for performance management?

Is there a minimum sample size required to use the bell curve for performance management? I was wondering if small teams (3-5) can use the normal curve / bell curve for categorizing employees by performance? I have a feeling that the sample size needs to be much larger than that (3-5) for the bell curve to apply. Anybody know if there is a minimum? If possible please share link to supporting evidence.

How do I handle the salary question when you're on the other side of the table?

There's been a lot of talk on the green about handling the salary question when you are the interviewee/candidate, which I have personally found helpful on many occasions, but now I'm on the other side of the equation, and would love to hear best practices on how to handle the situation and try to gauge a potential employee's salary expectations. Surprised With Being Let Go, Networking/Job Search 101 plz?

I was let go from my job last week - it was kind of a surprise, but I'm bouncing back and I was looking to leave the company anyway, so I'm not too broken up about that. I am not thrilled about the prospect of job hunting while unemployed (would have preferred to have landed a new job first) and am trying to get a handle on my next steps. I have some Networking 101-type questions that I need help with, as well as some questions about how best to frame what happened at the last job to recruiters/prospective new leads/interviewers, and how to best avoid ever being in this same situation ever again. Are all resume formats created equal?

I've been unemployed since the end of September. Recently, I've had two separate people (one (a recruiter) whose opinion I respect, and one (a woman at unemployment) whose opinion I find suspect) tell me that they would never consider anyone who submits a functional style resume (which is what I use). Do you hire people or work in HR? What do you think? [more inside]

I fudged the end date of my last job by six weeks. What now?

On my resume, I fudged the end date for my last job by six weeks, to cover up a bad situation where I was not at fault. Dirty Pics! Resign or Face Wrath?

Asking for a close friend. Said close friend accidentally left a USB drive in a work computer today that contained less than appropriate photo's of him on it. A co-worker found the drive and the photo's this evening. His boss is now giving him the option to resign this evening or face a full HR investigation in the morning. He recognizes this was a huge mistake on his part, but wonders what to do? Resign tonight, or face the wrath of HR in the morning?

HR wants my salary info

Tell them my salary or politely decline? On Friday, I learned about a job opportunity though an ex-colleague who would be my new boss. This person told me they're eager to fill the position and asked what salary I'm looking for. I ducked the salary question and, at their urging, applied online yesterday. Today I get a one-sentence email from an HR rep asking my current salary. I know salary negotiation has been covered on AskMeFi before, but I haven't seen this particular variation. No interview has happened. Doesn't salary talk usually happen later on? I have no idea how much this position pays, benefits, etc.; it could be better or worse than my current gig. The prospective position is grant-funded with a City agency. (Side question: are grant-funded positions risky?)

How to "encourage" someone to delete work data?

If we have an employee who has access and/or copies of potentially sensitive data on their computer *outside* of the office (e.g. they've used their home computer to download email containing work info, spreadsheets, customer records, etc) and we terminate that person, is there any sort of form or confirmation that we could have them to sign to "ensure" that they will delete any such data? e.g. something along the lines of "I certify that I will delete all company/work-related data on any of my personal equipment" I realize there's no way to *guarantee* that they'll do it. I'm just wondering if there's any sort of potential benefit to create such a form for them to sign off on (e.g. if we find out later that they sent a copy of x info to a competitor *after* they were terminated, will having such a signoff help us at all in court, for example)
