What's my Job Title?

Currently, I'm the "Office Manager" for a large, family-run restaurant that employes 170+ people. I am in charge of Design (internal/external, web, print, etc - this is actually what I have my degree in), limited PR (we have an external firm that I liaise with, I do all social media and PR asset management), Bookkeeping/Payroll/Accounts Payable, Limited HR (onboarding new employees, helping to create and maintain training materials, but no hiring/firing/discipline), IT/Tech Support, Project Management, Answering Phones/Reservations, etc etc... oh, and managing the actual office, too (ordering supplies, filing, printing menus, fixing the copier, what-have-you). I need a better job title. [more inside]

I’m looking to make a move to a different role and location of the Mega Corp I work in. Have two meetings set up with people who could make that happen. Now what? Please help me understand the perspective of the bosses I'm meeting with and what I might say now that I have made these meetings happen! Background and specific question after the jump. Snowflake Salary Requirements

To get involved or not to get involved?

Our new project leader is making my staff miserable and threatening the professionalism and success of the project itself. Both project and staff are dear to my heart, as well as my professional identity. No one wants to make waves while on the project; I've recently transferred to a different project. Is there anything I can do? [more inside]

Me--planning to quit job. Work--planning grant funded projects for me.

[For folks that work in the non-profit sector] I feel at a loss for what to do. I work for a non-profit that I have been planning to leave for some time. I am taking the GRE this month, applying to schools and even applying for school-compatible part time jobs. At the same time, my non-profit is trying to pull itself out of a budget hole by applying for a multitude of grants. Most of the deliverables are things that I am supposed to deliver and the only other person left to deliver would be my immediate supervisor. I like my supervisor and don't know how she would even get all the work done if I left. My work would not be easily transferred to a new hire. I feel overcome with guilt as each new grant proposal goes out the door because I'm not planning on being around to do this work. I know it would be really dumb to say that before I have an offer in hand for school or a new job. What is the right thing to do? Should I let them build their plans around me when I'm not sure I'll be around? [more inside]

Is it common for HR to offer to call new employers in consulting?

I work in consulting (technical work) and the company has approved for me to work remotely from afar. During the negotiations, HR mentioned that they were certain that it will work well and I have the company's full support (I fully believe this). However, they did say one thing that peaked my interest during our discussions. They stated that if I ended up wanting to work locally that they would be willing to call firms in the area to help me find a new position should the need arise on either of our parts. [more inside]

HR Interviews and Unorthodox Employment History

I'm an ABD Ph.D student pursuing a really awesome job opportunity as my next step. The firm has moved on to asking me to interview with HR to talk about my employment history, relationship with supervisors, etc. I have a solid resume, but I have one element of my recent history that's complex and difficult to explain. It's not complex-bad, just complex, and I'm not sure how to pitch it to HR. [more inside]

Surprised With Being Let Go, Networking/Job Search 101 plz?

I was let go from my job last week - it was kind of a surprise, but I'm bouncing back and I was looking to leave the company anyway, so I'm not too broken up about that. I am not thrilled about the prospect of job hunting while unemployed (would have preferred to have landed a new job first) and am trying to get a handle on my next steps. I have some Networking 101-type questions that I need help with, as well as some questions about how best to frame what happened at the last job to recruiters/prospective new leads/interviewers, and how to best avoid ever being in this same situation ever again. How to "encourage" someone to delete work data?

If we have an employee who has access and/or copies of potentially sensitive data on their computer *outside* of the office (e.g. they've used their home computer to download email containing work info, spreadsheets, customer records, etc) and we terminate that person, is there any sort of form or confirmation that we could have them to sign to "ensure" that they will delete any such data? e.g. something along the lines of "I certify that I will delete all company/work-related data on any of my personal equipment" I realize there's no way to *guarantee* that they'll do it. I'm just wondering if there's any sort of potential benefit to create such a form for them to sign off on (e.g. if we find out later that they sent a copy of x info to a competitor *after* they were terminated, will having such a signoff help us at all in court, for example)

How to address spelling in HR questionnaire

After filling out the questionnaire and emailing it back to the company's HR Rep I realized I misspelled a fairly common word, it was a stupid typo I somehow missed.
