Is there a classification of (HR-speak) discrimination when a male employee defers to female coworkers chivalrously (e.g. holding doors open)? Because the activity is solely based on gender, it seems like this would be the case, but it is not addressed as an example in our policies. (Title is Dad-quote from the 70's.)

I'm an ABD Ph.D student pursuing a really awesome job opportunity as my next step. The firm has moved on to asking me to interview with HR to talk about my employment history, relationship with supervisors, etc. I have a solid resume, but I have one element of my recent history that's complex and difficult to explain. It's not complex-bad, just complex, and I'm not sure how to pitch it to HR.

When a company invites you in to interview for a professional position, you spend half a day speaking with multiple people, and then they choose to not contact you in any way regarding the outcome of their search - - is that 100% douchebaggery, or are there legitimate HR/legal reasons they might behave this way? To be clear, I'm just talking about sending a quick email saying, thanks for coming in, we've made a decision, best of luck in future.

Two months ago, I applied online for a position at a US-based software developer and have not heard back from them beyond an automatic receipt confirmation. The job, along with related vacancies, is still published on their site. Would it be acceptable to contact the company's HR manager via e-mail or LinkedIn to express my continued interest in the position? Snowflake details inside.

YANM HR person/Hiring professional, but I am in terrible need of help.
A picture was submitted of me nodding off and now HR is investigating me for misconduct. I have had no previous incidents before, but believe this is only going to get worse. Should I stay and go through the investigation process or leave? And if I do quit/resign how should I go about doing it?

Interviewing for a new job. HR has asked- in writing (email) - for current salary (which is low, in part due to location in low-cost-of-living state) and salary expectations. Because they want this in writing, it doesn't seem like I can obfuscate with the kind of answers that are usually suggested for in-person interviews. Any suggestions? Details within.

Is there a minimum sample size required to use the bell curve for performance management? I was wondering if small teams (3-5) can use the normal curve / bell curve for categorizing employees by performance? I have a feeling that the sample size needs to be much larger than that (3-5) for the bell curve to apply. Anybody know if there is a minimum? If possible please share link to supporting evidence.

I was let go from my job last week - it was kind of a surprise, but I'm bouncing back and I was looking to leave the company anyway, so I'm not too broken up about that. I am not thrilled about the prospect of job hunting while unemployed (would have preferred to have landed a new job first) and am trying to get a handle on my next steps. I have some Networking 101-type questions that I need help with, as well as some questions about how best to frame what happened at the last job to recruiters/prospective new leads/interviewers, and how to best avoid ever being in this same situation ever again.

A co-worker found the drive and the photo's this evening. His boss is now giving him the option to resign this evening or face a full HR investigation in the morning. He recognizes this was a huge mistake on his part, but wonders what to do? Resign tonight, or face the wrath of HR in the morning?

Tell them my salary or politely decline? On Friday, I learned about a job opportunity though an ex-colleague who would be my new boss. This person told me they're eager to fill the position and asked what salary I'm looking for. I ducked the salary question and, at their urging, applied online yesterday. Today I get a one-sentence email from an HR rep asking my current salary. I know salary negotiation has been covered on AskMeFi before, but I haven't seen this particular variation. No interview has happened. Doesn't salary talk usually happen later on? I have no idea how much this position pays, benefits, etc.; it could be better or worse than my current gig. The prospective position is grant-funded with a City agency. (Side question: are grant-funded positions risky?)
