YouAreNotMyLawyerFilter: But I feel discriminated against as a mom.

I believe my HOA and condo management are unfairly targeting families and children, are being disrespectful to our needs, discriminating based on disparate impact, and allowing one "squeaky wheel" to run the show. It is ruining our health and well-being. Please help me to find what the parents of our neighborhood need to say or do to get the board to listen. [more inside]

Bleach Everywhere; Worried About Fetus, Cat, Plants

Help! Own a condo; HOA told us the wood porches would be painted this week after a spray wash. Workers just began to spray bleach everywhere on the wood to kill black mildew (wood was untreated after porches built 4 years ago). Concerns: 8 months pregnant asthmatic (me), our partly-tamed feral cat who spends much time on the porch, and a host of plants. I just watched as bleach misted down from the above porch coating everything on my porch. Help! [more inside]

Questions about buying and living in a condo in or near Palm Beach Fla.

The spousal unit and I are sick of Winter weather in the northern US and urgently wish to move to Palm Beach (NOT West Palm Beach). Our initial plan is to move into rental housing for a few months so we can be local while we shop for our new Condo home, but we have some questions about both life in the Palm Beach area and life in multi-unit HOA-run housing. We hope some Mefites with East-Florida-specific experience can provide insights. [more inside]

Investment restrictions during Developer controlled HOA?

The developer of my neighborhood (a single individual) built a personal home in the neighborhood and still lives here. He was the HOA's acting president (as the developer) until the development reached 75% capacity and then had 120 days to hold a vote to transition to an Owner based HOA. The new board has parsed the numbers and I am most concerned with insane "investment" he made to himself with the HOA's money -- resulting in a $15k loss. Can this be legal? [more inside]

Do condo associations have to file tax forms?

We just found out that there is such a thing as the 1120-H tax form for condo and homeowner associations, and the previous owners of our building have never filed. Great. We're going to start, but is this something that all condo or homeowner associations do? Were our previous owners unusually lax? [more inside]

Buy a condo/loft without joining a HOA in LA or San Francisco?

Is such a thing even possible? I have always rented apartments and am now looking into purchasing a loft, preferably, in either San Francisco or Los Angeles. I really have no interest in then paying for "rent" to some HOA at around $400/month. Is there a reasonable way to not do so, or does it entail looking for solo owned places which are probably really expensive? I'm hoping to keep it around 500k total. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Garbage Out, Garbage In

The HOA representatives here have decided without owners' vote and with very limited input that trash cans/garbage bins will be kept inside garages rather than in the individual outdoor alcoves specifically designed to conceal them. [more inside]
