Best pro-tips for managing a five day drink-a-thon

I'm home for the holidays and seeing many friends after years apart. I have five days, each consisting of brunch, lunch and dinner with others, and am looking forward to unimaginable quantities of free alcohol. I am a seasoned (pickled?) drinker that does not normally get hangovers but never have I been on such a social whirlwind with so many opportunities to celebrate. Does anyone have advice for overcoming the potential weaknesses of the flesh to rise to this challenge? Or, how to pace myself when offered so much free deliciousness? Details below [more inside]

How much help will we need with C-section recovery?

Mrs. Awesome is having a baby very soon! Yay! At this point it's likely to be a C-section - not our first choice, but we'll roll with it if we have to. I understand the recovery can be a bit rough; I'll be around for a month or so after the birth, but will we need more help than just me? [more inside]

C'mon, get happy

I am in a pretty emotionally difficult time in my life. (I'm in the midst of a season of high stakes interviews, and my finances right now are rather limited.) I've got access to professional help, so I'm all covered there, but I think it would be helpful to have a list that I can turn to on a regular basis of easy to do things that are 1) free or very low cost, 2) outside my apartment, and 3) schedule-independent* to help me keep my spirits up during this difficult time. Any suggestions? [more inside]

Why do I have to get semi-naked to see a doctor?

So I finally got health insurance in the US and made a 'new patient' appointment for a physical. After talking the nurse through my (very limited) medical history, I was asked to undress and put on a medical gown. I then met my new doctor, talked about my medical history again, asked for a referral to a chiropractor (I have scoliosis and associated back pain, and wanted to re-establish treatment). She took my blood pressure, did the stethoscope thing on my back, and did a bit of abdomen pressing. The rest was talking. So why did I need to undress and wear a medical gown? [more inside]

Can you get parasitic worm infections from packaged Smoked Salmon?

I'm a lover of seafood. So much so that I eat fish almost daily. Lately, I've been consuming a lot of smoked salmon -- the packaged ("ready-to-eat") kind that you find in the frozen food section of grocery stores. However, today as I was going through one package of smoked trout, I spotted several white dots buried in the flesh of several of the slices. These small white dots (approx. 1mm in diameter) were mostly concentrated on the edge of the trout slices, although there were a few white dots in the middle of the slices too. [more inside]
