This morning my portable hard drive said the folder I'd been working on last night was corrupt, so I restarted my PC. Now the hard drive is asking to be formatted before use. There are lots of tools available online but as an amateur, I'm not willing to risk playing around with it myself. How do I choose a good data recovery business on the Gold Coast, Queensland? Who to avoid? I need the data urgently and I'm willing to pay a ridiculous amount of money.
I know there are a lot of good programs that will allow you to encrypt part or even all of the files/folders on a portable HDD. I am looking for a simple way to password protect the whole HDD so that if it is attached to any computer, a password is needed to access it. I know that is not as 'good' as encryption', but that is all I need. TIA.
It is possible to clone a hard drive from a failing computer, put that disk image on a drive in a NEW computer, and expect the installed software to just work? [more inside]
What I really want is an 8TB hard drive with an ethernet port on the back side. The Intel NUC is almost right but it only supports a 2.5" drive at best. Is there a product that does what I want? It must run Linux but doesn't need to be particularly fast.
I own a macbook with 256 GB of space. I used to have a 1 TB backup drive but it broke, along with the majority of my media files; this is the second time in two years that I've had a hard drive go bad on me. I opted for a smaller 256 GB SSD for backup this time around as I heard they're less prone to failing, but it's too small for me to put on much besides my Time Machine backup. What options do I have to store my other files? [more inside]
After some research, I think I've found my ideal backup solution. It involves me:
- Manually creating a Macrium Reflect encrypted image file of my data once a week
- Storing the encrypted image file to two external HDDs
- Placing the external HDDs in two different (safe) physical locations
Seems like a pretty easy to navigate digital video solution: Drobo with digital video files, USB to Bluray player, HDMI to TV. Can you suggest a specific model Bluray player that will accommodate this use? I REALLY need to shift my DVD collection to some kind of HDD-based (I think?) system, but ease of navigation and simplicity of set-up is very important to me. If I am barking up the wrong tree, please suggest a more appropriate solution.
Just got a new internal hard drive for my PC and would like to copy files from my netbook to my PC's new hard drive. [more inside]
I've always backed my files on CDs and DVDs, but a few years back I decided to go for external hard disks because they seemed more practical. I would love to get SSD external hard disks, but they are very expensive. I'm currently looking at cloud-based backup solutions but I don't really know where to find something of quality that is private and relatively cheap. Any ideas? [more inside]
I am planning on using an OWC Data Doubler to replace the optical drive in my mid-2012 13" Macbook Pro with a 120GB SSD. My plan is to use the SSD for the OS and applications and then use the HDD for files. I have a Time Machine backup and a Super Duper clone of my HDD. However, I some questions about the easiest way to reformat the drives after the installation is complete. [more inside]

What's the best way to go about installing a solid state drive in a new laptop? (And is this even a good idea?) [more inside]
I recently bought another 1TB HDD, so I now have two 1TB HDDs (Both western digital; caviar black) and an Intel SSD (operating system). The new HDD, after one day of use has gone bad. S.M.A.R.T has detected errors, I ran the western digital tool and that also detected errors. I was warned to backup my drive, so I tried to last night but after 2 hours I gave up to re-do it tomorrow (tons of files). I stopped the backup properly and shutdown. Now this morning I'm trying to get all 830gigs of my files off of the new bad drive, back onto my original storage hdd before the new drive goes completely bad and I lose all of my important files. The windows restore and backup program is giving me error code: 0x8007045D near the start of the backup. I/O device error. I've checked the destination HDD and it returned no errors (both with the western didgital tool and using chkdsk). I need to fix this problem quick before my new drive totally fails.

Let's say I want to buy a new external hard drive. I can pick a case with a particular interface (USB2/USB3/FW400/FW800/eSATA) and a mechanism with certain performance characteristics (RPM, latency, transfer rate, etc). Is there a straightforward heuristic that will tell me "if you're using interface X, don't bother buying a mechanism faster than Y."? [more inside]

The laptop now isn't seeing my new HDD, so I'm guessing I need to update something in the BIOS (ver. A07, 6/27/2005)? The new drive is a Western Dig Scorio Blue, if that makes any difference. Little help?
