Masters dilemma: Great opportunity, not sure which path to take

I have a sizeable scholarship to get a Master’s at a school that has a great job placement rate at some pretty cool companies. However, it’s for a field that I don’t know that much about and have no professional experience with, plus I've been accepted into programs directly relevant to my current field. [more inside]

So, what is alt.chi?

HCI people: I have an opportunity to think about going to alt.chi next year. From what I can gather, it looks interesting, but also will be expensive to travel to and to attend. So, has anyone been in the past, or actually presented alt.chi papers? [more inside]

How can I get this year back?

What do I do if I feel like I wasted a year of my life in grad school? I just read the requirements for a job I should be qualified to get and just realized I haven't done any of it. I'm just about to graduate with a Master's in a field I have nothing to say about. [more inside]

Career change, grad school, debt, and you. I mean me.

I am a web developer with decent abilities but a growing frustration with the work. I have identified an area that I would like to pursue - Human-Computer Interaction. I've been struggling with how to proceed with what seems like the inevitable next step in my working life and I'm hoping MeFi can be my surrogate mentor. I'd like to ask anon for employer-related reasons, which means more information than you may require inside. [more inside]

I also got accepted to DePaul for Human Computer Interaction, which I am already enrolled in and am starting in 2 weeks. So now I have a big decision and I was wondering if you guys had any insights into this dilemma. [more inside]

Tools for Self-Awareness

Please help me brainstorm: how can technology be used to increase, otherwise augment,or lead to greater self-awareness in the real (non-virtual) world? I'm putting together a presentation around what I perceive to be a growing trend in Human Computer Interaction: systems that help us to become more self-aware, or at least help us to understand the hidden consequences of choices that were once invisible. I'm particularly interested in the area of personal health and wellness but I'm not parochial in this respect. [more inside]

Y'know, I'd really like to be a luthier.

I'm a college sophomore on my way to a CS Major / Religion Minor. Apparently my initial career options (just from that major) are a little bit better than my English-major friends. But I'd much rather make interesting things than work in a cubicle. How do I do this? [more inside]
