I need to get out of the house and chill.

Calling all introverts: I need suggestions for places in or around Oak Park/Chicago where I can chill with a laptop or a book and not be bothered. For personal reasons, I'd like to be able to get out of the house on a moments notice for awhile and chill by myself. I don't want to go to bars or listen to live music. I'm comfortable in crowded urban settings but I don't want to talk to people. Museums are great but I can't afford to do that every weekend. I prefer not to be outside unless it's cold enough to snow. Yes, I am serious.

I just moved near Ridgeland and Madison in Oak Park. I'm closest to the green line, but the blue line isn't out of the question (I also have a car). I have a laptop. I cannot connect to wifi or 3g or whateverthehellyoucallit with my phone.

This would especially be needed Saturday, Sunday and Monday. If there are places open late (after 9 pm) during the week, that's good too. Actually, for weeknights, anywhere between Hoffman Estates and Oak Park would work (off of I-90 or 290).

Will I get a darn parking spot at the Riverside MBTA station?

Boston Metro Filter: Does the greenline riverside MBTA station parking lot fill to capacity during the day? I moved from Boston to Framingham - and am adjusting to all of the many ways to get back into the city. I have tried the Framingham/Worcester commuter rail line and it works but I am looking into other options. If I get to the riverside mbta station around 10am will it be full? If so how early must one get there to have a spot?
THANKS!

Local or Express?

Help me optimize my daily New York City Subway commute! A good question for those who love transportation puzzles: Every business day, I travel from Union Square to Grand Central at 8:30AM and return at 5:30PM via the 4,5 or 6 train. These trains depart from opposite sites of the same platform. Given the frequency of the trains, and their comparative speeds (and the fact that the local stops along the way), am I better off:

1. Always getting on the first train that arrives, be it local (6) or express (4,5)
2. Always getting on the first express train that arrives, even if that means not getting on a local train (4,5)
3. Some other answer?

Why?

Now, say I just miss an express train (i.e. see it depart the station), am I better off:

1a. Getting on the next train to arrive, be it local or express (4,5 or 6)
2a. Getting on the next express train to arrive even if that means skipping a local train (4,5)
3a. Some other option?

Why?

I am assuming in this question that I always can board any train, but if I estimate that the express trains are too crowded 10% of the time, and the local trains are never too crowded, does that change your answer?
