Starting fall 2010, I'll be going to grad school (Master's) in a pretty esoteric field (studying texts from late antiquity, written in an obscure language). If I decide not to go on to the PhD, what can I do now and during my Master's to maximize my job opportunities when I get out? Are there any skills you would really strongly recommend that I pick up? I'm a grad student in Massachusetts. My school-sponsored health insurance is terrible. The maximum benefit limit is 75,000$ and covers only 80% in-network, 60% out-of-network. I'm poor, but since I'm from abroad, none of the state-supported programs will help. What are my options? [more inside]

Can I get into a funded Math Master's or PhD program? I'm graduating from a 4-year college with my B.S. this Spring, and I'm in my mid-30's. I have good GPA at this school (about a 3.6, up to about a 3.8 in math courses specifically) and good GRE scores (720 V / 780 Q), but I have dropped a lot of courses (I've worked full time over the years while getting my degree), and back in the mid-90's I flunked out of the first university I went to. I feel like I really need to decide between pursuing two career paths that each have their own advantages. I feel like I could be happy or unhappy in either one. I've been putting off the decision essentially for 5+ years now, and it's finally coming to a head. I need advice, coin flips, anecdotes, flowcharts, whatever you've got. Hope me break this down, mefi. [more inside]

A former professor and I are meeting tomorrow, as she's writing me a recommendation for getting a PhD. She's requested that I bring a CV along with my writing samples. I am trying to apply to a research oriented clinical psychology doctoral program. I am finishing up my undergraduate in psychology at the University of Maryland University College. It is an accredited ONLINE university which doesn’t offer any undergrad research opportunities. I want to apply to programs this coming December. I feel I can adequately prepare for my GRE’s and my GPA is 3.65 (major GPA 4.0). The only problems I am facing are 1.) Finding undergrad research opportunities, there are many universities around me in Chicago but won’t they prefer undergrad students from their own institutions? 2.) Provided I find an undergrad research opportunity will only a few months of research experience be suffice to apply to grad school with? 3.) I am worried schools will frown at my undergrad from an online university.
