I periodically wipe Chrome's browsing data (usually when it starts feeling sluggish). The window that pops up shows the 'cached images and files' size. It's almost always at 638 MB and I've never seen it go higher. Why 638? Is it truthful? Is it arbitrary?
When my laptop (MacBook Air) wakes up from sleep, I have a really hard time reconnecting to Google stuff: my Gmail, my google docs, even just plain old google.com. At the same time that all of this is happening, I can connect to all sorts of other web pages. [more inside]
Is it sociaIlly acceptable to google someone I knew, say 10 years ago, to find out what happened to them (e.g. where they live, what their career is?) I am not planning to contact them, I just get curious about where people ended up. If I search for someone on Linkedin, will they find out information about me at all, seeing as I don't have a Linkedin profile?
On my Google Dashboard, it says I have an insane number of views for my "Google Sites". I don't know what this is or why this would be the case or even what "sites" are. I have tried using the developer module to research this, but honestly it is over my head. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.
Back in the olden days I had a whole slew of search engines I would use to find stuff on the interwebs, some engines were better than others, some were slanted in areas, science, images, etc. These days I just use Google and it seems to do me pretty well. [more inside]
When I do a search in Google (in every browser on my Mountain Lion Mac), in the URL field there is the URL for the google search. Of course. If I click on "images," instead of a URL showing, I now just get the search response (ie, searching for "what the hell", instead of showing 'https://google.com/search+whateverblahblahblah' it just shows "what the hell" in the URL field. This is new since yesterday! Any ideas to reset it? Thanks.
A few months a ago I shortened a URL wit the Google URL Shortener (https://goo.gl/[etc] and distributed it to a small handful of people. As recently as two weeks ago, it continued to work just fine. [more inside]
So it looks like hyphens in domain names do mean lower positing in Google’s SERP but does this mean the same for keywords? For example, my site contains the word 'multi media' but I would like to change that to 'multimedia' on every occurance. Is this ok? Will it impact my SEO?
I've been doing research involving the treatment of musicians under repressive regimes. A while back I found a graph that had a list of countries, and for each country listed the number of musicians killed, tortured, abducted, assaulted etc. in a certain period of time. But I've lost this graph!! Can you help me relocate it? [more inside]
I want to use a Google Hangout "On Air" for a project, but a tiny limitation is getting in the way. I would like to bypass the 'Press to Talk' functionality with a tiny browser script/hack/modification. My programming knowledge is tiny, but I am sure this could be done super super simply with a script loaded in the browser. Perhaps there's better solution. Any ideas? [more inside]
I'm always impressed lurking around here by the expertise of folks when it comes to finding sources/answers. Obviously, there are a lot of librarians and information specialists whose jobs involve research, but still it's clear many of you are much better than me when it comes to using google. So, how can I better? What google search strategies do you use? What resources would you all recommend? [more inside]
I've found this (see more here), which seems to be defunct (links to the "generator" are 404), and this, which is less than satisfying. Here in the age of alleged "robot authors" I'm hoping to do better. Any leads, anyone? [more inside]

I have a serious project proposal for Google. I don't need to make money on it, but I'd like to get it looked at. I've been poking around their websites, and have found places to submit business and partnership ideas, but I'm really not sure that those are the right way to submit this concept. It's something on the order of Google Art Project, but different from that. What would you recommend or link me to? Thanks!

Please recommend for me a new search tool to replace Google Desktop. Ideally I want something that searches the full text of all files, that covers everything on my hard drive plus Google Docs. I want it to be fast, offer results in context, and have a simple interface that offers 'sort by relevance' and 'sort by date.' I use Ubuntu. [more inside]
So, it would appear that Google have changed their search algorithms. Using search queries that would have previously returned hundreds of results I am getting a handful of results which are mostly irrelevant / gibberish. Any ideas how I can go back to the "old" Google? Thanks!

Yes, I've tried forcing an unexpected reboot, but I can't access Google, Gmail, or Twitter. Weirdly, Microsoft.com, Hotmail, Facebook, and Bing (and obviously AskMe!) all load with no problem whatsoever. And it's only affecting this computer (the only OS X machine) on the network! [more inside]
I am trying to figure out how to get to this timeline part of Google (in this example, it is following the space program) from the Google main page. I originally got this page from a previous mefite's cool post about history of rock and roll and plugged in my own terms. I tried getting to this point from the homepage....when I type in "Google Timeline" it gives me a timeline to search newspapers. If anyone has wisdom, let me know. I really like this tool but want to explain to others how to get to this page rather than have them plug and play from my link. Thanks!

I need real-time data of the number of people searching different sets of keywords on the internet in a particular location. Some examples: The number of people searching for jobs and jobs related information at that given time(preferably also a particular place as in country or city) The number of people searching for marriage and dating related information. What is the best and cheapest way to get this data? The more real time, the better. Searches on Google would probably be the best given their dominance in the search market, but even other sources would be alright, like Twitter.
