As part of a general digital cleanup (thank you, Heartbleed), I want to perform the long overdue task of backing up my Gmail account (with nearly a decade's worth of email) to my mac. I have two questions: 1) Is gmvault the only option? Is there anything more accessible to a user who hasn't used Terminal with any regularity in eight years, and even then wasn't very proficient using the command line? 2) If gmvault is the only option, or the most accessible option, can someone explain very clearly how to run it? I am unable to successfully follow the instructions on the gmvault website--they seem to assume that I'll intuit some necessary steps, when I actually need every step laid out for me.
Why can't I sign up for google apps with the domain I own? Weird troubleshooting loop, I'm probably doing something wrong that is really obvious. [more inside]
Right now I have the email setup of my small business so that firstname.lastname@example.org (we'll call it) is our public address, and email sent there is forwarded by our host provider to email@example.com, which is our main company account with Google Apps for Business. 99% of emails sent to firstname.lastname@example.org come through to email@example.com just fine, but there's that 1% that just disappear -- they don't go to spam folder, they don't seem to go anywhere. Help! [more inside]
Are older phones or phones designed for poorer countries any less susceptible to spying than the latest Apple, Google or Android models? I've read about CEO's looking for the very old brick phones because since they don't have the sophisticated technology of the modern phones, they're harder to monitor or track. I understand the phones w/o apps are clearly more secure regarding third parties because they aren't sending personal data to companies. But what the government and everything else; voice, location via cell towers, SMS; the very basics.
I have an iphone. Today I will be getting a MotoX. I don't really know a lot about smartphones in general or Android in general (or hell, even ios really) except that I assume there are going to be a few hiccups in the transition. Help me avoid those hiccups! [more inside]
I think the time has come for me to jump the iPhone ship. The announcement of the Google version of the Galaxy S4
at I/O was the clincher. But I am not 100% sold on the idea, mainly because the S4 is an ugly brute, but also because I fear for the apps and innovation I will miss. Help me out, specifically in finding a worthy replacement for my beloved Mailbox
app. [more inside]

Looking for someone to summarize the key advantages and disadvantages of going with a premier Google Apps account versus Hosted Exchange Service versus in-house Exchange (where we are now). We are a small non-profit 150 users with 1.2 FTE IT support.
Why the desire to move? Recent experiences with worm have brought the cots of in-house to the fore in downtime and support time to fix things..

Gmail Hosted Apps attachment weirdness.
I administrate a hosted apps account; recently a MS Publisher file was sent to everyone in the organisation, all were able to open it originally, bar one person, who for some reason, when attempting to download, could only download as a zip file. Tested the same situation in Firefox on XP at home (the situation occurs on IE6/XP) and it downloads fine. Tested with another account on XP/IE 6 and i find this is the same case, i.e. only able to download the MS Publisher file as a zip file. Has anyone else experienced this weirdness? is this due to Google withdrawing support for IE6?
