Most "distracting" sites I can block by an entry in my etc/hosts file (Mac OSX 10.8.2). e.g.:
127.0.0.1 plus.google.com
But this method doesn't seem to be able to block gmail.

Earlier today I got a message from an address and name I didn't recognize with no text and "Hiii@" as the subject. 'This is clearly spam' I thought, and marked it as such. About 15 minutes later I get a gchat invitation from the same person. I shrugged, and decided to answer it. The conversation seemed real enough, and there was no enticement to do anything like click on a link or buy some scammy product. I'm racking my brain and still can't place the name. Is this a spam bot, or a real person?

It's an old cry now - to get out of Google's claws. Mail, calendar and everything.
However, I always find one thing missing.
Chat is never talked about. As a matter of fact this one is the difficult most. You need to have added all those chat contacts and they in turn have had to added you(approved) you back, unlike email where you just need to fine an email and the receiver gets it unless you were specifically blocked.
So, let's discuss how to release our chatting app/service free from the claws of Google/Facebook/Skype &c and still be able to:

This has happened twice now, and it is freaky. Google chrome on the iMac I use in my office at work (at a university) will have usernames and passwords for people who have never been in my office ever. The first time it happened it was my father's email, and the second time it was my stepmother's. Why would chrome be filling in these odd emails when it doesn't even save my own login information after closing the browser window?

I am finally going to stop using a paper calendar and start using my laptop/iPhone/iPad instead. However, having used ol' reliable paper for so many years, I'm a bit paranoid about using Google calendar (or an app) and then losing all my data somehow... Is there an iPhone/iPad calendar app that would make me feel more "secure," or is there a service like Backupify that
doesn't require a Google Apps account? I'd love to back up my Gmail too, if possible. (Am I just worrying too much? Is using iCloud enough? I am clearly clueless.)

Especially concerning since i had never seen that site, or even heard of it. What gives?

In Gmail, is there a way to chat from an alternate email?
They are both Gmail accounts. One is my main, which the chat defaults to. I would like to be able to chat from my alt email so I can don't have to give out my full name to random folks from the internet. I found someone asking this very question on the Gmail forums, but there were no answers.

This morning about 108 gmail inbox messages vanished. I can find them under "all mail" but i don't know they would leave the inbox. Also, someone's been trying to add an event to my google calendar, with no success.
are these two things related? is there evidence of a hack?
thank you.

I'm on Mac OS X, Chrome, Gmail. How do I get MS Word and Excel to play nice with Gmail? Right now, when I go into Word or Excel and click
File/Send To/Mail Recipient (as Attachment), a Mac Mail window opens up. Same thing if I happen to click an email link in a Word or Excel doc. I've installed Gmail Notifier, which opens a Gmail window for mailto: links on web pages, but doesn't help with Word or Excel. (In Mail, I've gone into
Preferences/Default Email Reader and selected Gmail Notifier (1.10.7) but this makes no diff.)
So: how do I make Gmail the default email client for Microsoft Office "send to" and "mail to"?

Gmail question: Is there a way to set up a script to auto-respond to an email with included attachments? I asked a guy if I could send him my resumé and cover letter so he can circulate to relevant people at a staff meeting tomorrow, but he hasn't responded and I cannot be sure I will be awake to get his response before the meeting. It seems that it would be a faux pas to send them blindly after asking for his go-ahead. If this is possible, is there a way to do it only if a specific person emails you, or will it have to be an automatic response to anyone who emails me during this period?

I receive a couple of non-Gmail-filtered spam emails a day, from a friend's compromised machine/account. I can easily deal with them / filter them / discard them.
Besides hitting "Report Spam" I'm just wondering if there is a better place to report these consistent messages. I've been getting them for 6 months or so, doesn't seem the Big G's learning algorithm is ever gonna catch on...
