I end up in these situations where I need to buy a gift for a kid in the extended family, but the idea of just buying regular toys always seems lame. I like being a creative gift-giver. Can you give me some ideas for unique gifts for kids that would go over well? [more inside]

My neighbor is a big cricket fan, which is a challenge in Brooklyn when it comes to watching games on television. ESPN's app for the XBox is not very good, but it offered coverage of the West Indian teams he was most interested in following, so I've hosted him a few times to give him a chance to watch. I've gained some appreciation for the sport myself, mostly because his enthusiasm is infectious. His birthday is coming up, and I'd like to give some cricket related gift. Searching the internet suggests that cricket doesn't spawn apparel and other merchandise like other sports do. Is that true? Are there test match team jerseys or anything like that? Other ideas for gifts that might please a cricket fan?

My lawyer did an awesome job for me on a case. He's late 30s/early 40s, male. Need ideas for a "thank you" gift. Catch: we live in Springfield, IL so lots of more "urban" upscale options are nil. [more inside]

A fairly wealthy client has invited me and my boss over for dinner. I'd like to take a gift to say thank you. The catch is, he doesn't drink booze and can't eat sugary foods. Any ideas what I could bring? Food and non-food ideas welcomed. Looking to spend not more than $30.
My Mom used to love using bath beads, but we haven't been able to find them for ages (We used to get them at a little red shop instead of a bigger store; I think it was a body shop inside of a Sears or Bay or something like that?) Anyway, I figured I would get her some for mother's day. This is turning out to be a lot more challenging than I anticipated. [more inside]

I have a puzzle box...a little box with a puzzle you must solve in order to open it. The opening inside is a cylinder about 2.5" in diameter by 3" in length, so, big enough for a standard plastic gift card if you bend it a little. I want to give a gift that is more interesting than a gift card, so I need your ideas! [more inside]

My 8 year old son is in a high school play and I don't know what to give him afterwards. I know flowers for performers are customary but is that the case for boys as well? To be honest, I'm not sure he'll be thrilled with flowers. Any other ideas? Also, do I give the gift on opening night or closing night? Or every night?
A regular customer at the coffee-shop where I work just lost her dog. She is a lovely, somewhat lonely seeming older woman. She and her pup were attached at the hip and a familiar presence in the cafe every morning. [more inside]

When my partner started dating his now ex-wife, his first Hanukkah gift to her was an well-intentioned but ill-received doll that has become an ongoing joke for over 20 years. My mother in law has traditionally made and taken big bags of fudge to her friends and family for the holidays. Is it just me, am I over-reacting? [more inside]

My car ran out of gas this morning. I was running in the rain on the highway shoulder, eyes set on the ramp to the nearest gas station, when a very kind person pulled up to offer me a ride. I didn't even pause to assess his likelihood of being a serial killer - the guy just exuded mellow good neighborliness. I was so grateful that I jumped right in his car, figuring that he most likely was on his way in to work at the same giant company that I work for (which, happily, turned out to be true). He drove me to the gas station, and then backtracked on the highway to drop me back off at my car, where he waited to make sure all was well. Guessing he was late for work as a result, but he couldn't have been more pleasant and easygoing about this gesture (and so politely brushed off my embarrassment at running out of gas and needing to be rescued!). I found out from a colleague where he sits, and I'd love to drop off a thank-you note and an appropriate small, thoughtful gift on his desk tomorrow morning. Something to acknowledge this very personal gesture, while still remaining professional. You know, like a can of beans that says, "Here's hoping YOU never run out of gas!" Ack! Totally joking. That would be terrible. No joke gifts, just something classy and small. Would a bottle of wine be too personal for a business relationship? Thanks in advance for the help!
I would like to have a site or app where I can list stuff I want to buy from many different places - ideally from any vendor on the web - and people can buy it for me without them getting my address. Does such an animal exist?

Need to gift a wine bottle to someone who enjoys red wine. I don't know what type of red. There are so many brands to chose from so since I don't know his taste I would prefer to give something from a recognized winery. Don't want him to think I picked the cheapest red :) Couple of brands that come to mind: Robert Mondavi Kendall Jackson Beringer Budget: up-to $50
I want to send a get-well gift to a friend whose baby had surgery. I'm thinking flowers for her, but also a little gift for the baby and a bonus gift for their older child. Where could I order this online all in one package/delivery? Not sure if they allow sweets for the older child, so should not be candy focused.
Can I use an Amazon Gift Card to pay for items on Amazon.com AND the Amazon App Store or do they each have their own gift card? [more inside]
Went to birthday thing at a restaurant/bowling place for a work friend. There were 6 of us here. I consider the people there work-friends, in that I generally don't hang out with them outside of work. I was surprised that 3 of the friends gave gifts to the birthday girl, while the other guy bought her drinks and food. I tried to offer to pay for part of the entertainment cost but was begged off. So I felt like I didn't contribute much to the birthday celebration and possibly commited a faux pas in not getting a gift. I was under the impression that people at work who weren't that close don't give birthday gifts to each other. Did I commit a faux pas? Should I give a belated gift?
