I have one day left to online shop for my brother's Christmas pressie and I'm drawing a blank. I've already gotten him a couple of things, but I need one more item to make it a worthwhile parcel. He is 33, a drummer, and wears casual, laid back clothes, but no "funny" tees etc. Is there a t-shirt/ book/ small piece of drumming gadgetry/ anybloodything that would suit him? Will have to be available in an online UK store for it to be delivered in time, and my budget is about £20-25. He will be travelling back to London from Belfast after Christmas so it needs to fit in carry-on luggage. Thanks!
This is a gift question, but not holiday related. Still, MeFi is full of experts.... So, my first PhD student just successfully defended, and I am very proud of her. The question is whether to give her a gift, and if so, what.... [more inside]
Another gift-question, but I didn't find anything in the archives that's exactly applicable, so here goes: I'm looking for a Christmas gift for my 11-year-old cousin. He's pretty into science and math, and according to my aunt, already has tons of toys/games/kits. So it seems like she would prefer for him not to get another one of those, but her only other suggestion was to give him "coupons" to play card/board games with me. I'd be happy to do that except frankly I'm not sure he'd actually appreciate it - fwiw we rarely see each other, and I'm ten years older and female. I'm thinking a good book might be nice, but I don't know exactly what he's already read and liked, other than the typical series like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Diary of a Wimpy Kid etc. Any suggestions - either lesser-known books or other options I might not have thought of? My max price range is probably $25-30 but I can be a little flexible.

I really like holiday gift guides, which combine the illusion of thoughtful shopping with the ruthless efficiency of the internet. It's easy to find guides from popular websites and publications, but surely there are more and weirder out there on the web. What is your favorite 2013 gift guide? What are the most interesting gift guides from blogs and niche publications? [more inside]
I got a wooden crate like this one to do a craft project for my father for Christmas. He got a record player for his birthday and is starting a record collection all over again and needs something to contain them in. I figured I could make something neat and personal out of a wood crate, but I need help with the details, or ideas for what to do with it. [more inside]
I'd like to get a relative a "caviar of the month club" subscription--probably for only three or four months, due to cost. Do you have any experience in this and can you recommend a place? Google turns up a number of options, but I know nothing about caviar, and I don't want to choose some fly-by-night operation that will send a tin of shoe polish every month...
I'd love to find a bag similar to the one used by Picard and Starfleet officers for my boyfriend for Christmas. Image inside, with more details... [more inside]
I need suggestions for a durable leather men's belt under $100. My dad is one of those difficult to shop for people because he buys what he needs or wants himself. Last night, he mentioned that he did need a new belt. He also said that he had already replaced his belt once this year, but they always seemed to crack & need replacing often. He wears a separate belt to work, so this would just be for time off. [more inside]
My grandmother loves the kinds of paperback best sellers that are commonly for sale at airports. Danielle Steel, Nora Roberts, Nicholas Sparks, etc. I'm not very familiar with these authors or others like them, but I know that she would enjoy getting whatever the latest book by these kinds of authors as soon as it comes out. For Christmas I would like to sign her up for a subscription service, if something like this exists, that would mail her the newest novel in this category as soon as it comes out, or around once a month, or some such. I think she would enjoy the fun of looking forward to a monthly delivery and not knowing what book will be inside. Is there a service like this that exists, that would make for a good gift? I have a niece and two nephews. As the one among my siblings who's into comic book culture, my brothers have started asking me for input and recommendations for the kids, and I'm finding myself having some trouble. A lot of superhero comics may or may not be age appropriate and I also worry about some of the weird sexist subtext in a lot of stuff. I am asking this partially for input in picking Christmas gifts, but also in order to be a better family resource. [more inside]
My mom, who recently sold her home and moved into senior housing, has expressed interest in owning some sort of computing device. I'm trying to find an entry-level crossbow for my husband. Correct me please if I'm wrong, but it looks like Barnett is a good brand and I've read that the Jackal is a decent entry level one. But I've noticed that there is one call the Wildcat and I can't figure out which is better. [more inside]
I babysit a (pretty mature) just-turned-9 year old boy and would like to get him a ~$20 gift that is non-material and preferably something we can do together in Manhattan. He has two little brothers so the apartment is bursting at the seams toys and books. My first, best idea is a trip to the Superhero Supply Store in Brooklyn, which totally would be his jam, but Mom would probably prefer staying in the city, so I'd like to source some other ideas first! Something we could do after school together one day that wouldn't take more than 2 hours would be perfect. Educational and enriching are secondary to straight up fun. He's mostly an indoorsy bookwormy type whose yearly highlight is the NYCC. He does karate and loves Shake Shack (but too cold!) He's vaguely into video games. And his bday party is inviting friends over to watch Indiana Jones and eat "dirt cake". Is there anything coming up in the next month event-wise that the little dude would enjoy? Any ideas for fun experiences would be magnificent. Thank you MeFi!!!
I have a person that I know fairly well for a secret Santa gift exchange that has a soft 30 dollar cap on it. I have a few routes I can go down, but she's a baker by profession. She works at a grocery store's bakery department, and does some side work for weddings on occasion. For people who work as bakers / cooks, would you want to receive some sort of gift related to this or is that the last thing you want to think about after you're done with work? If no, then what's an awesome ~30 dollar gift that someone could give you?
Every year, each of my (8 or so, all adult) family members buys the same small gift for the rest of us and gives the gift anonymously (and to themselves, to preserve anonymity). With Christmas a month away, what silly or useful stocking stuffers can I give out to each of my family members across a wide variety of ages? [more inside]
Practical gifts, coffee edition: please direct me toward a travel mug which meets these criteria: 1. All components of the mug must be permanently affixed TO the mug (no fully-detachable lids/etc). 2. It must be difficult to tip over. 3. It must be dishwasher-safe. 4. It must be durable. [Backstory: Mr. Julthumbscrew has lost-lids-to/inadvertently-destroyed/wept-copiously-about hundreds of sub-par mugs; I want to get him ONE MUG TO RULE THEM ALL.]
I have spectacularly flaked on a friend's new baby and am now looking to buy a welcome gift for a ~9-month-old. It's also a second baby, so they'll already be overstocked with gear, clothes, toys and books. To be worthwhile, this will have to be monumentally awesome, and/or personalized to the particular baby. What should I get? [more inside]

My aunt is a big camper. And we're talking serious wilderness mountain/desert camping, not loading up the RV for a weekend. She shops regularly for gear and thus has most of the basic things. I need to get a Christmas present for her. What are some objects that serious campers/hikers can never have too many or too much of? Alternately, what would make a good gift as an object that is more attractive or otherwise superior to the basic utility version? (I'm thinking here of like a really good folding knife, but I am purely spitballing here.) Price range would be ~$50.
I have a friend who is extremely social and environmental conscious. She has been an activist for most of her life not because she woke up one day and decide to be one, but because she sees where the need is and get busy. She is an Pediatric Nurse Practitioner who volunteered for a month duration in Haiti after earthquake hit in 2010. During her service at Haiti, she saw what she was doing was just a stop gap measure and not really in any way helping Haitian to better their medical service and delivery. So she came back and got busy with getting a master degree in Public Health. Now she got a job of a lifetime to go over to Rwanda for Partner's in Health to oversee and train nurses in 3 hospitals and 30 clinics. This assignment is indefinite, meaning she will be starting a brand new life. [more inside]

For Christmas, I'd like to purchase digital photo frames for family members that would allow me to update the photos wirelessly. The reviews for several of the digital wi-fi frames are awful on Amazon. Do you have any recommendations for digital photo frames that specifically come with wi-fi? Or another digital photo frame that would be easy enough for non-tech-savvy people to use? Thank you.
My GF is running her first-ever marathon next weekend in Philadelphia. I'm looking for creative or interesting suggestions for either a gift or something I can do that she might like (beyond flowers at the finish and a massage, both of which are a done deal). Any runners out there have a specific suggestion--maybe something sweet or thoughtful that was done for you after you finished? Thanks!
Hi, So I really like this guy. We have been flirting for a while but we haven't kissed or even dated. Recently we had this conversation and for some reason he says that he will get me anything for $50 as long as he hasn't heard of it being given before. He says it should be one thing. [more inside]

I pride myself on being the best gift giver ever and I think I have nailed the idea for my Secret Santa this year, a Wholefoods Cookbook with accompanying produce. The thing is, I don't really know what wholefoods are, and the book is a week or 2 away (being sent from OS). I need this gift in the post around mid November so want to start my shopping for the produce now. Please help me, what kinds of awesome things can I put in the hamper? It can be snacks and grocery type things for cooking. Nothing that needs to be refrigerated. Im thinking dried beans, wholemeal pasta, that kind of thing. The book is 'Cooking with Wholefoods: A guide to healthy natural ingredients, and how to use them with 100 delicious recipes... by Nicola Graimes.' Thank you.
