I really like holiday gift guides, which combine the illusion of thoughtful shopping with the ruthless efficiency of the internet. It's easy to find guides from popular websites and publications, but surely there are more and weirder out there on the web. What is your favorite 2013 gift guide? What are the most interesting gift guides from blogs and niche publications? [more inside]

My Mom used to love using bath beads, but we haven't been able to find them for ages (We used to get them at a little red shop instead of a bigger store; I think it was a body shop inside of a Sears or Bay or something like that?) Anyway, I figured I would get her some for mother's day. This is turning out to be a lot more challenging than I anticipated. [more inside]

How do I shop online for a nice dress that someone else (my wife) will wear without notifying her? Since we started dating in college, and for a couple of years after that while we were doing what we were doing, we were never really making enough money to splurge on nice evening wear and so forth. Now, we're finally pretty financially stable, and this year for Christmas I want to get her a very nice evening gown (and some jewelry, but that's easy) for special events and so forth. The kicker is that I live pretty far away from any sort of store that could help me out with this, and any time I do get to any sort of civilization, I'm with my lovely wife and can't exactly do any surreptitious shopping. That leaves the Internet. [more inside]

I have a vague idea about making a friend in the UK a birthday present of some hand-decorated (by me) socks. Where can I get some perfect, already-beautiful but understated, socks to enhance? What kind of socks would a feminine academic in Oxford, UK, find wonderful? Do you know your online sock options? [more inside]

I was a dolt and missed the deadline to ship my Mom's potential Christmas gift
to my parent's house before I left town. So now I'm left with one weekend in NYC to find her something pretty for the home that's also small enough to fit in a carry-on suitcase. I need recommendations for classy, inexpensive stores in NYC that carry unique and/or handmade bowls, candle holders, tableware, etc for under $80. [more inside]

My daughter (18) is a great fan of Bridget Jones. On her Christmas list this year is 'a diary'. Putting 2 and 2 together, I have been searching for a Bridget Jones Diary er, Diary (if you see what I mean).
You know the kind of thing. Imagine a "Winnie the Pooh" Diary with pictures and information (as well as being a diary too). But with stuff from the Bridget Jones Film.
Can't find one anywhere. Have the marketing people missed this wonderful opportunity for Christmas and 2005?
