My mom is flying to Scotland today for a long business trip. She texted me asking if there is anything I wanted from there. She used to always get me tea on these trips, but I'm cutting it out of my diet. What should I ask for that's not too expensive? Something I can't get in the U.S. Midwest.
My sister-in-law, originally from Europe, is a visiting student in NYC this Fall. For her upcoming birthday, I thought a cultural membership or NYC experience would be fun. Maybe something her student budget would not ordinarily be spent towards. Based on this question and other threads, I thought membership to MoMa, Whitney, or New Museum may be options. The only issue is that she is only here from now till December 2016 and the memberships are for 1 year. Or maybe a trapeze class. [more inside]

My best friend's birthday is at the end of this month. We are going to see Adele in concert next month in NYC. I wanted to get her either Adele or concert related gift to begin the excitement. She is early 30's and her interests include all things pink, concerts and Broadway shows, 90's music and boybands, makeup. Dislikes include trying new foods, sports, driving.
We'll be visiting cousins and their kids (toddlers thru tweens & a teen) in Denmark and Sweden in August. We're coming from upstate NY. We've got books & comics plus some gross US candy for the kids, but are stumped on anything to bring to the adults. We're packing very light, so small is good. What's novel, or amusing, or tasty that comes from the US and is uncommon in Scandinavia? Extra or alternate kid gift suggestions are also still welcomed!
My friend is celebrating his five year testicular cancer-free diagnosis in December, and I'd really like to get him something amusing and wonderful as a gift. He's a pretty big nerd with a wonderful sense of humor about being post orchiectomy, so I'd love to get him something that's both commemorative and slyly hilarious - something he'd see and smile at every day that doesn't scream Lance Armstrong's missing testicle. A friend's parents hosted my child and I for a few days in Seoul and were very generous as hosts. I'd like to have a gift delivered to them to thank them. I'm thinking flowers or fruit. I need to be able to order from the US, in English. Taking suggestions for what would be appropriate.
My lovely colleague's birthday is this weekend, and i want to gift her something nice for around 15-20$. She's in her 50's, and recently ( possibly menopause related ) has been sleeping really poorly which in turn makes her super cranky. She lives above a restaurant and the noise insulation is terrible, and that's not helping her sleep. She's in an ongoing fight with the restaurant owner about the noise and is looking to move out as soon as possible, but that might take another year. [more inside]
A young heterosexual couple in San Francisco try to give each other gifts for their anniversary. They give up something of value to themselves to buy each other a gift, but when the exchange occurs they realize that what they bought for the other is dependent on something the other has already given up. What have they given each other, and what have they lost? [more inside]

My best friend recently had her poem published for the first time (and got paid!). I'm very excited for her! I'm seeing her tonight for dinner and would like to give her a nice congratulatory gift. I was planning on a simple bouquet of flowers but I'm wondering if there are other ideas? Ideally something I could pick up after work and give tonight but I would also consider something to give her later if it was special enough to wait for. [more inside]

Hi! I have a friend who has a birthday coming up. Male, in his 40's. Loves to surf. Lives on his sailboat. Any ideas? Something that can be ordered online is best, I don't have access to stores. Price range <$100. Anything you can recommend that is surfing related, or useful on a sailboat would be greatly appreciated!
As it says in the title - visiting Japan soon, and need a gift for an 11 year old girl who likes "small, pretty things" (per her mom). I'm looking for something that will feel a touch exotic - something specifically American, though globalization makes this a tad more challenging. [more inside]

I am making a gift for a couple and I need your help! Part of the gift will contain a list of fantasy locations (i.e. LOTR - Mordor) from different sci-fi and fantasy franchises/worlds, with the overall theme being "Home is whereever I'm with you". My list only has three locations on it so far, and I'm struggling to come up with more. Don't constrain yourself--it doesn't matter if the locations are from movies, TV, books, anime, or something else. The couple is in their mid to late 20s, so contemporary-ish is probably best, but I'll take anything you've got! If it helps, I know they love Game of Thrones, Battlestar Galactica, Doctor Who, Star Wars, and other shows/movies in that vein. Thanks!
A beloved person turns 21 tomorrow. Will be seeing said person this weekend. But would like to acknowledge this milestone on actual day. Difficulty level: said person is in Stockholm (suburb) and I'm in California. Stockholm is 9 hours ahead. Swedes: Can I get a Lilla My mug delivered? Flowers? Ideas welcome. Under $100. Thanks!

She is an amazing lady who is very smart, highly educated, worked in wall street and took this job to make a difference in someone's life. My son was very fortunate to have her. She loves my son and has helped him to become a young man heading to college. I can't compensate for everything she has done. [more inside]
My friend is getting married this week, yay! I didn't get her a present originally because it's a destination wedding, but I've changed my mind and really want to get her and her hubby something nice that would be an "experience" (like a night out or something). What London-based thing (i.e. gift cert to a hip restaurant) can I get her? Needs to be something I can buy online, as I'm not in London. [more inside]
About a year ago, my family moved into a house in a new neighborhood. Our next door neighbors have been welcoming from the beginning and we like them a lot. We found out recently that our neighbor had a heart attack, and is currently recuperating at home while taking a break from work. We'd like to get a gift to show our support. Flowers seem insufficient, Gift Basket maybe too impersonal. We're feeling stumped and would love some ideas. [more inside]

In the last four months, I lost both of my beloved cats to cancer. During the great cat die-off, my vet was not only a vet-- he was a friend, a shrink and a sanity check. He emailed me daily, even on his vacation. He did free house calls. He called me several times a week. I would like to thank him in some way which is both a big enough thank you and not too much. [more inside]
My sisters got me a $100 gift certificate to a nice restaurant here a few months ago (think really nice steak and seafood, there are a couple others elsewhere in the country; I'm in California). They bought it online, emailed me the link, etc. we finally use it last, go to pay, and are told that the balance is $0 and the certificate was already used approximately 6 days after I received it!! My boss gave me a very (very) generous gift. What is an appropriate way to thank him? Buying him things seems a little gauche as his price range is so far above mine. I was thinking a card but that seems like not enough for what the gift was. Hope me?
Hi everyone. I am going to be traveling in a month and staying with close friends, whose children I am fairy godparent to. Nephew #1 is two and a half, nephew #2 is going to be less than 3 months old. I would like to get a gift for nephew #1, the two and a half year old, and perhaps something for the parents. My needs are fairly simple, but I'm not around kids much and I don't know what I'm doing. More details under the cut. [more inside]
I work for a community non-profit organization. A local iconic structure in our neighborhood is turning 50 years old this year. On its actual 50th birthday, the community will be invited to visit it and take part in a couple of special activities, and we’d like to have a giveaway item that will be exclusively for that day’s visitors. What should it be?? [more inside]
One of my friends is learning to play bass, I've been helping him out with some basic stuff as I play guitar, but I don't know much bass specific stuff. It's his birthday soon, and I'd like to get him something bass related. Is there a book, a piece of kit or anything really that you'd recommend? The stuff we're going through is mainly blues/rock. Thanks.
I have a friend and coworker who is quitting to take a job related to international development. I'd like to get her a small gift to celebrate this new stage in her life. The new job involves some international travel - probably one week away out of every 2-3 months. I'm thinking it would be nice to get her something that is supportive of her new job - maybe something that will make the travel nicer. What should I get her? What are small things that improve life for international business travelers? [more inside]

My wife and I will be going to Florida on vacation for a week at the end of February. We bought a condo earlier this year, and one of our neighbors is an older couple that has a winter home near Orlando. Their place has a semi-separate one-bedroom living space, and they very generously offered to allow us to stay there while we're on vacation, which will save us a few hundred dollars in hotel costs. I am looking for an interesting card and a little box or envelope big enough to give something the size of a silver dollar. The gift is for an illustrator so I am feeling self-conscious about getting something they will really appreciate. Handmade, beautiful, interesting, well designed would be notes I want to hit. Ideally in NYC but mail order could be OK too.
