I'm looking for a secluded beachfront cabin to rent for 2-3 nights in the southeastern US (ideally the Carolinas, but Virginia, Georgia, and even Northern Florida would be a possibility). Essentials are: 1) on a sandy beach with swimmable water, and 2) as secluded from other people as possible. Budget would be less than $300/night. [more inside]
Two questions about Flannery O'Connor's "The River". 1) What's a "paper brick house"? 2) What kind of public transportation are the "cars"? [more inside]
I'm headed to Georgia on vacation in a few weeks. We're thinking of renting a car in Tblisi and traveling around the countryside- to Stepantsminda and Mtskheta. I'd appreciate any advice on driving in Georgia! Do we need to rent a 4 wheel drive? Or are the roads good enough that we can just use a regular economy-sized car? Thank you!

Do you think I can build a network and find a job in technical communication despite living in the country with no STC chapter? My foundation is decent: an English degree and current technical job. Said job has few technical writing roles, and none available for the foreseeable future. More inside. [more inside]

My fiance is hearing voices or random strangers talking about him/us. Really intimate details that no one could know. I am 99% sure this same type of thing cost him his job recently. This has happened maybe 4 times in the last 2 years that I've known him. On two of those occasions over been in the same place he has and I've not heard any of this. He tries to confront people and of course no one knows what he's talking about when he does this. [more inside]
I was told that in Georgia I can get married in any county I want since I am a resident (fiance is Japanese and immigrating here on K visa). I was wondering which courthouse might have the lowest waiting period? We want to get married as soon as possible after she arrives here. I am in Atlanta area so closer is better. Any other advice is welcome as well.
After stumbling across the blog Georgian Recipes (and specifically this recipe for Acharuli - Ajarian Khachapuri) I realized I've got a lot of eating to catch up on. If you know about Georgian food, please give me your tips, tricks, substitutions for hard to find ingredients, ingredients that should never be substituted, links to your favorite Georgian recipes, and basically everything you think I should know about it. I'm taking my two daughters to see my family and we're driving, from central Pennsylvania to New Orleans. Here's the basic route. Where should we eat? What should we detour to see? It'll be a two or three day drive. Help us plan it.
Asking this question for a family member who just graduated from the University of Mobile with a B.S. For Atlanta-area mefites - can anyone recommend a cleaning person? I'm a messy guy looking for someone to come clean/tidy my Midtown apartment once a week. I'd like them to come while I'm at work so ideally I'm looking for a person rather than a service that would send different teams different weeks. So far I've struck out trying to find a solo practitioner on yelp. Anyone with a recommendation?

I'll be in Atlanta next weekend, and am looking for restaurant recommendations. I'm staying close to the CNN center but will have a car, and am willing to travel for good food. I'm a moderately lax pescatarian. All price ranges welcome. Shrimp and Grits is one of my favorite foods, so if there's a 'Best Shrimp + Grits in Atlanta!' place I'd love to hear about it. Also, if there are any craft brewers/brewpubs in the area making good beer, please tell me who those are as well.
We have 7-10 days for a road trip (leaving from Chicago in a couple days) and are thinking of exploring the South by car. Where should we stop, and what should we see? Thoughts we've had include driving towards Florida or Savannah and hitting Cattanooga, Asheville, Bowling Green, and/or Nashville. We will have one dog with us, so bonus points for State Parks or Forests where we can hike with her, but we'd like to see some towns or cities, too. Thank you, hive mind!

My lady and I were planning to go somewhere less cold than NYC for New Years eve. We were thinking, like, Florida. But now my friend is getting married in Athens GA 4 days into the new year. Hooray for him! But our travel plans are all jumbled now. We don't want to fly somewhere, hang out on NYE, then fly to GA and go to a wedding. So, where do we go? [more inside]
A while back, I read Noli Me Tángere by José Rizal, which is sort of the national novel of the Philippines. I've just borrowed The Knight in the Panther's Skin from the library, which is seen as "Georgia's national epic". What are some other national novels? (I've seen the Wikipedia national epics list, but I'd prefer novels to epics, I think, unless they are really outstanding.) If you have particular translations/editions to recommend that'd be great as well.

I just recently moved to Atlanta (yay) and have been doing some gardening (aside: fellow atlanta mefi-ers please say hi, i need friends here!) Anyway, in pruning the honeysuckle bush outside our place, i found that about half of the plant is entangled in what looks to be some kind of invasive vine whose leaves look like this. I've cut most of it out of the plant now but I'd like to know what it is and what i should be doing to keep it away. I also see it growing up the side of the house a little. Please dont tell me its poison something because i 've been rubbing my hands on it all morning.

How can I find out whether or not my mortgage company is ripping me off? I thought about something like a "forensic audit" but I see via Google that that is the hot new scam, and I don't want to be taken for a ride (twice). I am not looking to modify my loan or get out of my mortgage, I just want to make sure that my payments (for which I pretty much always pay extra) are being applied correctly. [more inside]
I'm looking for walking tours of Atlanta available as CDs or (ideally) as MP3s that I can stick on my iPod. So far, I have only been able to find these two driving tours, but I'd really like to find a walking tour. Anyone know of anything available, either for free or for purchase?

Anyone from Georgia around (not the one in the south - the one in the Caucasus). I am fascinated by this Georgian folk song, which I think is somehow related to this piece by Tsintsadze because the melody structure seem a little similar and (I think) they share a name, "sachidao". That's all I know, and I really like this song. If you're Georgian, or just happen to know Georgian folk music, can you tell me more about it? [more inside]
