I was reading a book to my son (Face to face with Lions
from National Geographic) and found a very interesting statement about male lions that our ousted from their Pride.
According to this book, a male lion averages only 3-4 years as a leader of a pride, before a younger lion comes in and kicks out the old guard. The book says that the old pride leader then tends to lose his mane, making him look more feminine, which helps him be able to stick around with his pride, without confusing anyone as to who the real leader is now. Where I can find free United States geographic databases? I need a database with relationships between all zipcodes, areacode, cities, states, counties, neighborhoods, all with coordinates and detailed information if possible.
How up to date does not matter, and I am looking for something free.

We're renting a car from Enterprise that has unlimited mileage if you stay in a certain geographic area. We plan to leave this geographic area. I want to be up front and pay the extra fees, but my traveling companion wants to lie and save money. Convince me I'm wrong, or help me convince him he's wrong. [more inside]

Basically, I want to build mapping system, similar to google maps, using something like Map server & open layers. Take in my own image, such as a building map, define roads or “hallways”, and import points via a XML or RSS feed. I want an interface that I can take the xml feed and run it under the map in a box, displaying it under the map, allowing users to click on the event, and being able to see where they need to go, and using a current fixed position, being able to see how to get there.

I am looking for a comprehensive list of cities by country, that can be uploaded to a database. The list needs to show the local name for the city, and if it showed the English version too that would be good, but not essential. I am able to pay if required, though obviously would prefer not to.
