Chess on the computer for a 6-year-old

My 6-year-old daughter has recently developed an interest in playing chess. We have a blast playing together, but I think it would be fun for her to play against the computer (or other novices) during her "screen time." What are some good computer chess games/websites that would develop the game of a young novice? Free is best, but I'd be happy to buy something (Win XP) if needed. Pretty graphics would be a bonus, but aren't necessary.

How can I use the Internet to promote an interactive film and arts site?

There are a lot of buzzwords being bandied about regarding the 'viral' 'grassroots' ways that 'Internet 2.0' can be used to 'create a groundswell' through 'guerilla marketing'. What? What do these buzzwords actually mean? After getting vague advice like 'use MySpace' by people with marketing degrees who don't use the internet to market anything, I am interested in cutting through the crap by hearing from real people with actual experience in these matters. How can the Internet be used to promote a site with interactive stuff, games and short film... and little-to-no budget for marketing?

Two sided jigsaw puzzle with numbered code

Puzzle Filter: Looking for any information about a puzzle I saw in the late 70's (?). As a kid I saw an explanation of a jigsaw puzzle that was distributed in a velvet bag, on a TV show (That's Incredible! maybe, or 60 Minutes). The jigsaw pieces had a code written with numbers on both sides of the puzzle pieces (white numbers on black background?). [more inside]

games like GTA

My wife really, really likes the Grand Theft Auto series. She doesn't play the story line or missions, just likes to walk/ride around shooting people, cars, helicopters, etc. She uses cheats constantly. Like I said, it's not about completing or competing, just shooting stuff. What other game could she have a good time in?

Oblivion Hardware Question

Gaming Hardware Question: I recently started playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Right now I am running just about at the minimum required for the PC version: Pentium D 820 Dual Core (2.8 GHz) Radeon X300 SE 128MB Video Card 1GB DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz 160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) Right now I am playing at the lowest resolution, which is fine for me. I am enjoying this game immensely as is. The only real problem is that when I an fighting 4 or more enemies at once, the game slows down and it becomes almost unplayable. I am wondering what would be the best upgrade to improve this specific aspect of game pay. I am not an obsessed gamer or anything, so I don't want to sink tons of money on a top-of-the-line video card. I don't want to spend more then $200 or so, and I am wondering if I would be better off getting a bargain 256mg video card, or if I should upgrade my system memory. Thank you.

Good scifi computer game(s)?

I played various RPGs as a kid (D&D, Gamma World, Top Secret, Traveller) and later as an adult (most notably Alternity). My favorite RPGs are scifi. I don't have the time (or team) to play with now and would like to play on the computer. Care to recommend a good scifi (post-apocalyptic, space opera, trader-based or whatever) computer game or two? I'm especially interested in games that aren't just FPS.

The Gods Must Be Petty

I'm working on a boardgame in which gods punish mortals, and am looking for examples from throughout mythology that demonstrate divinely disproportionate responses to human action.
