I'm trying to play the SNES version of Shiren the Wanderer, with the
English translation patch, on a Mac. The ROM without the patch works fine. When I put the patch in the same directory with the same base filename (the procedure for using a patch), the ROM loads and hangs. I'm using SNES9X as my emulator. Has anyone gotten this working? I'm willing to try any emulator.

I want to develop an RPG game based on a non-popular, out of print tabletop RPG - the game I'm developing will be for PC/Mac/(possibly mobile). So far, I'm looking into RPG Maker, which seems to be able to fit the bill most appropriately. I've also looked at Titanium for developing mobile games, but this seems like it's not necessarily a good fit for just hitting the ground running. Any ideas are welcome - priorities are that the system is flexible for development and is easy to begin with (I'm cool with advanced features, but don't want to have to hack the system in order to merely start bringing my ideas to fruition).

Anyone got clues for where I (a) get hold of SimLife and (b) get it running in OS X?
I'm happy to put together a Wineskin or it, or run it in VMWare, if the Windows version is the way to go.

My 10 year old daughter has done awesomely at school, and was promised a new Xbox game as a reward. She has no ideas of what she wants, and is excited by the idea of being surprised. What is something I can give her that she will love, but that won't make me want to write strongly worded letters to game creators?

I'm trying to place the names of a number of games where you have multiple characters that you control in sequence. One was a cursor puzzle type game, the other was a side-scrolling actioner.

PC game suggestions only, please. I'm a stay at home mom, and my laptop is pretty much glued to my side.
Civ IV is my all-time favorite game. I usually play the Rise of Mankind/A New Dawn mods. I'm not great at it, as I find it hard to beat on Noble level, but I can consistently beat it on Warlord level.
So what else would I love? I like turn-based games because I have little kids. I need to be able to drop my game whenever and come back to it as I left it. I've always enjoyed the exploration aspect of Civ, and I've liked playing Sim City in the past.

Some friends and I are planning to spend a Saturday holding what we are calling the Study Hall Olympics: a competition planned around the stupid games kids play in study hall or on the bus or wherever they have time to kill but have to stay put (paper football, thumb wrestling, paper-rock-scissors, &c.) We've come up with a handful but I'm looking for more. When you were in school, what were the best games of this sort?

I'll be on three flights in the next 11 days, and although I'd like to sleep through every flight, I doubt that'll happen. I have an iPhone 4 and a 3rd-gen iPod Touch at my disposal, so I'd like to throw some new, non-battery-killing games on them before I go.

I saw some Brooklyn high schoolers outside playing a game that could be described as turn-based freeze tag (and poses that came out of tai chi postures). As the initial setup they stood in a ring of around 8-10, frozen in a pose. At certain points one person would make a wild move (mainly using arms, hands extended flat, sometimes pivoting) and attempt to tag the person next to them out of the ring. They would return to frozen after that, but there may have been a countermove made as well. Eventually there were two people and a winner was found. Any idea what they were playing?
