What is the best GPS unit to buy for my fieldwork, that would ideally display a list of homes to be mapped in a spreadsheet format and allow touchscreen entry of information into the spreadsheet (coordinates, consent obtained [yes/no], why home was unable to be mapped [drop-down menu])? Does this type of interface exist for GPS units? [more inside]

My house is incorrectly located by MapQuest, Google Maps, Google Earth and GPS systems. I assume this means that there is an error in some common database they all rely on. Is there a way to request that the error be fixed so that future versions of the database are correct?

GPS solutions. I hate getting lost and not knowing alternate routes when I'm driving and it seems that increasingly I wish I had some sort of navigation unit. So I started looking. In-car systems are about $2k (and stuck in a single car), portable handheld ones are about $600 (I can use in other cars, which is good), but I hear iPaq PDA units with GPS are only about $500. Has anyone used an iPaq for road trips? Does it work ok with the small screen? What's the best add-on GPS to get for it? And what kind of iPaq do I need as a base to make it work?

Online maps... I run along a weird path and around a lake, and I have no idea how far I'm going. Is there an online map that'll allow me to trace my route and gauge the distance?
