Winter, we're coming

My wife has accepted a post-doc position in the University of Wisconsin system with duration of around two years. Where exactly in Wisconsin is slightly up in the air, but no matter where we end up, we have a host of questions to ask about moving there and Wisconsin life in general. Once we know where we're actually going, we may have more questions about the area, but right now I think our biggest concern is winter. [more inside]

How do I find a couple people to cheaply move a few pieces of furniture?

I'm planning to get some cheap/free used furniture from family/friends, thrift stores and maybe craiglist. I don't know anyone who's strong enough to carry it up to a second story apartment (no elevator). How do I find someone to do this that isn't a full-service moving company? [more inside]

Ideas for cheap, mobile furniture?

Furniture ideas for the perpetually mobile. For better or for worse, I've been changing living spaces about every six months. I'm sick of lugging furniture but don't want to live completely out of boxes. What are your ideas for cheap, compact, very mobile solutions for (at least) a desk, dresser, and full-size bedframe that doesn't require a box spring? Bonus points for book storage ideas and organizational pieces. Real furniture or makeshift (i.e. tupperware bins) OK. [more inside]

Help me find movers for one piece of furniture.

I see a few pieces of large furniture on NYC Craigslist I want to purchase. Are there movers in NYC who would take care of single-item, inter-borough moves like this for a decent price? And to follow up, are movers like this insured in case they do any damage during the move?

Save my sofa

My movers finally arrived in Boston (Somerville) with my furniture and various items. Yay! How do you ship large furniture thousands of miles?

My Mom is selling her house, moving to a new place and given me an ultimatum. She says I have one year to get my crap from her or it is no longer mine. As a result, I need to ship a large, antique, wooden cabinet 2,000+ miles. It probably weighs about 100 lbs. How can this be accomplished for a reasonable cost? What is a reasonable cost for this type of job? How do you protect the piece of furniture during shipping? Are there any companies you have worked with and recommend?

Hauling Furniture to Baltimore

I have the opportunity to acquire some nice furniture from my folks, stuff I'd (as a student) could never afford. I don't know how to drive, nor do I have friends who would help with this. I'm looking for people who shipped things like 45lbs office chairs and large wooden desks to recommend a freight carrier that will pick up in boston and drop off in baltimore. Or even suggest a moving company. Basically, I know what to look for, I just want anecdotes and recommendations on the best (read: cheapest, I can wait a week so long as it gets here cheap) way to do this. As far as budget goes, I'd like to not spend more than $200 and if I can do it for $100 I'll be ecstatic.
