I would like to find some French Canadian music that is about the protests of the
Summit of the Americas that took place April 2001 in Québec City. Failing that, dissent, civil disobedience, protests, police (over)reaction, etc would also be good themes.

I have three (linked) questions: According to
this page, On the Road was adapted to radio for France Culture. I'd like to get my hands on a recording of this. I looked for a while, but Radio France doesn't seem to provide a way to buy radio shows on disc, and it looks like it was only aired once.

Photography question: an article in Spin in the 80s discussed a French photographer's blurred pictures of jazz musicians in motion. Very similar to Charles Peterson's photos. I wrote to the gallery then, but I have no idea who it was now. Any clues to who this was? My Spin collection has long been sold to Half-Priced Books.

Haunted by a movie. About ten years ago I was in France and I saw a chilling suspense movie on late-night TV. I'm not sure that it was French - maybe Dutch or German, with subtitles? I remember little: the music-box/bells theme, the murderer's slow grace, and a scene where the detective fills a room with steam to recover a victim's traced final message. A little more (and a spoiler) inside.

I have an exam coming up (in a matter of hours, in fact) in French. I'm in highschool and plan on continuing French well into university. Where can I find literate and well-spoken French-speakers that I can talk to? Failing that, where can I find interactive resources/web-quizzes to test my knowledge of French grammar?

I'm interested in acquiring a little comfort with spoken French - passively, by listening to it. I looked through a Podcast archive (and looked through some AskMe threads), and could only find French music. I'm interested in news, stories, interviews -- basically just listening to French people talking. Even stuff intended for children might be good.

French Citizenship or Residence
I am a United States citizen who is looking to move to France. I am currently living in the Republic of Ireland but I am finding it harder and harder to maintain legal residence (even though, my mother is remarried to an Irishman and my ancestry is Irish) It seems you either have to be offered a contract for employment or be a student to stay here. I HEARD that requirements for French citizenship or permanent residence were more lenient. Does anyone have any information on this. I am NOT "highly skilled" in the slightest, unless you consider fixing PCs and Macs a skill.

In around 1986/87 (+/- two years), I saw an edition of
The Last Resort with Jonathan Ross (failed UK attempt to copy the Letterman chat show format). One of his guests that night was a freakish guy, possibly French, who swallowed things and then extracted them through his stomach. So, he'd swallow some string, then stick a skewer or something through his stomach wall, and hook out the string. Yes, it was that disgusting.
1. Was this real or an illusion? From what I can remember, there were close-ups and it didn't look like it was being faked.
2. Who
was this man?

Language programs abroad. I'm a university student, I'm Canadian, and I'm wondering if anyone could recommend a good immersive program aboard for studying French or Chinese. I doubt I can be proficient in either in one summer, and I already have a very basic grasp of both. What I'm looking for instead is a chance to go aboard to develop my french or mandarin further. Any suggestions other than commercial programs geared for Business-persons?

My girlfriend is planning on transferring to a university on the east coast next semester (Ontario or Quebec with preference for Quebec). She has little experience with French so anglophone universities are a necessity. Currently attending a university in British Columbia (the name escapes me), she has a 3.4 gpa and hopes to bring that up to between 3.5 and 3.7 by the end of this semester. What are good schools? Safety schools? [In Quebec] How difficult will it be to locate part-time employment without speaking much, if any, French?
[She's undecided on a major so ideally the school would have a good sciences or liberal arts program]
