In a few days I will be staying with friend's family in western France, at a house they own. I will be in the UK the next few days. Normally I would bring wine or chocolates as a thank you for the accommodation, but France does these much better and cheaper than the UK (I am told). I am Canadian. What could I bring that would still be a great gift, that I could find in London? It should be something like food or drink, and something of benefit to people on vacation. Price about $50. The friends I am visiting are French/Canadian and appreciate quality/luxury

I am in the market to buy a French bulldog. However, the one that I wanted to buy was around another dog with sarcoptic mange. While the dog has shown no signs of mange, I am still leery of buying this dog as I have a cat and three children at home. The seller said she will get the mange okayed by a vet before they are sold, but I am still not sure. Has anyone dealt with this before? Any thoughts on whether I should still buy the dog?

I read a quote once, that is failing to come to mind... something like 'voila, la fenêtre', from a piece of french literature, or perhaps a play. it was meant as a darkly comedic response to a heartfelt expression, kinda like Catherine Keener's character did in Being John Malkovich. Anyone have an inkling?

I'd like to add a Latin or French phrase meaning "from life" (i.e., short for "painted from life") to my signatures on paintings to differentiate my work from artists who rely on photos and video monitors instead of live models for their work. I'd like it to be pithy and idiomatic, and so I'm somewhat reluctant to rely on Google Translate . . .
Does anyone know the name of a recent French movie( well maybe 2005) about three gangsters in Paris and a girl who gets involved with them...they ask her to video a heist for them then she becomes one of the gang. They go to Cannes, etc and have a gangsters holiday, then the big robbery they have planned goes wrong at the end (where she dresses as a high class prostitute in a blonde wig) but she ends up in a large apartment by the sea America with a piano full of bank notes

On Saturday, I'm having a french themed cooking party. The idea is that we all cook collaboratively to make a meal together. So far we have five confirmed guests. So far we Cassoulet and Reiene de Saba (cake) on the menu. Please suggest ideas for menu items and ways to pull off the timing. I have an induction cook top with five burners, two ovens, a fairly large kitchen with lots of counter space, and most basic cooking implements-but if there's something specialized you think I should have, please share that too! Also I own mastering the art of French cooking and the joy of cooking so I'd like to stick to recipes in those cookbooks or available on the web! thanks!
What's the French Comics Canon? What are the books it's assumed everyone has read if you read French comics? I've gone through this list, but doesn't really tell you which are held in esteem or are big touchstones/turning points. Have you ever read a story about three people who have died and are stuck in some sort of afterlife hotel room? My mom has been trying to find this book for the longest time. It's by a French author, and she read it in French. It's short, just about interactions between the people, who don't realize they're dead. Thanks!
What did early (1900-1920) french film directors actually do? I get the sense from my research that early film directors in France were more like what one associates with producers nowadays. The "director" chose the script, chose the actors and the budget, and then left the execution to a cameraman who basically filmed everything as if he were recording live theater. This explains how someone like Louis Feuillade could "direct" hundreds of films each year. Is this assumption correct? [more inside]
I'm a native French speaker, and I'd like to to learn some new English words. However, many advanced English vocabulary books contain a lot of words which are exactly the same in French. Of course, some of them are false friends, and there's always something to learn. However, I'd like to know if there exists a vocabulary book specifically dedicated for French speakers. [more inside]
Trying to indentify a film I saw just 10 minutes of yesterday, before falling asleep (was on RTE2 in Dublin). First scene was a tall blonde in a short dress talking to a short dark haired guy on a bridge over the Seine, about debts owed to a gangster ("30, 35....make it 50 thousand"). Cut to nightclub where the blonde makes 1000 euros a time taking 'gentlemen' to the bathrooms whilst the guy gets drunk at the bar. There was no sex... just scenes of the original guy getting progressively more and more drunk. The film was relatively recent judging by the nightclub music - but in beautiful black and white... I'd love to see the movie in it's entirety. I checked RTE's website, but it only has listings for today onwards... I'm leaving Dublin this evening - and I cannot find a newspaper from yesterday.
