Anybody have evidence -- empirical or anecdotal -- about what recessions do to the self-employed? I'm a freelance writer, and am wondering whether my clients are more likely to farm stuff out to me because I'm cheaper than hiring in-house staff or cut their freelance budgets and dump more work on the people they're already paying. Thanks!

I recently left my comfortable position in a safe, nonprofit enclave to try the big bad corporate world and see if I could make a go of it. Three months in, the fit is pretty lousy. Ah, but I think I know what I really want to do. And yet, should I give the new place more time to see if things improve? What's that? Yes, or course, there's ... [more inside]

I've been interested in photography since I was a kid, starting to take it more seriously as a hobby in 2000, and have taking it very seriously since last year, especially photojournalism. I had some experiences photographing last year that made start to wonder if this wasn't something I was good enough at to do and now I'd really like to start thinking about freelancing as a photojournalist as a sideline to my day job. I've built up a decent amount of good equipment that would allow me to make a start. I'm not sure how to go about it, short of writing off to publishers with a portfolio and a letter, which has come to nothing so far.

Have any photographers - especially photojournalists out there got any advice? Thanks in advance!

I'm thinking of getting away from the whole NYC corporate rat race, selling the house, buying a considerably cheaper one in the boonies, and living a simpler and less stressful life. One of my main clients (I'm a freelance programmer, been doing tons of web/php stuff in the past few years) stopped paying their bills and wanted to renegotiate my rate with them below the level I can live on ... I told them no, so now I need a new client or three pretty quickly. A lot of people here are freelance web developers; any suggestions on how to get a few new clients?
