Invited to spend holiday in France in a gigantic villa with a couple who are only acquaintances and their friends. There will be 15 adults and as many children (age baby to 12). Lodging is gift to all invitees. I can't come empty-handed! What on earth to bring? I thought local chocolate and coffee (Vosges chocolate and intelligentsia coffee from chicago) but friends cringe, as it is FRANCE. anyway, coffee and chocolate is not enough probably. Also thought of the kids but other than age range, i know nothing about them. Please help! I don't think any others are american, but not 100% sure. thank you thank you thank you
Writing a funeral scene. Am familiar only with Jewish funerals. What happens, graveside, at a Catholic funeral? Prayers? How is the casket carried, and covered with dirt? Any specific rituals I should know about? If any knows particularly what happens at a Catholic funeral in France this would be even more helpful.
Help me to think "out of the box" about exercise, and meeting new people. I need to do both (having just moved to a new country) and am interested in ideas that let me get some exercise, and that might let me meet new people. I am in France (in the Alps) so am going to need indoor and outdoor activities, because come wintertime, I'm not sure that cycling or hiking are going to be options. [more inside]

I'd be quite grateful for any suggestions.

It seems to me that French eggs taste much stronger than American eggs. And therefore, any dish with eggs that I prepare in France tastes bad because the strong egg taste overwhelms all the other flavors (this especially ruins sweet dishes). Does anyone have advice on how to get rid of the taste (or better yet, to find eggs in Paris that don't have the strong taste)? [more inside]

I'm going to Lyon this weekend and will be free from late Saturday evening to about noon on Sunday. I'm into food and photography but am on a super-tight budget, so I'm looking for both some cheap, tasty delights and some particularly pretty little corners of the city. I'm staying in Vieux Lyon, going to a concert in Villeurbanne, and can speak French.

Hello, Hive, I'm planning on moving to Paris a few months for work and pleasure. As a native Swede and a member of the EU group of states, I guess I'll have an easier time getting a somewhat reasonably priced apartment reasonably close to Cité, Montmartre or what have you (Notre Dame I guess would be the center point everything revolves around). Has the Hive got any good suggestions regarding apartment-finding? Other tips on good areas to live, areas to avoid, would be great as a general guide. [more inside]

What was the deal with Vichy France? I know pretty well the what, when, where, how and who...but why? When the Nazis conquered other countries, I assume they just absorbed them into the Reich -- but in France's case, they chose to install a puppet government instead. How come? And can we believe Casablanca? Did the Vichy authorities really have enough autonomy to prevent Major Strasser from simply seizing Victor Laszlo and dragging him off to a concentration camp? If so, what kind of puppet government do you call that?
