Should a 30-something small mostly-vegan female even attempt WWOOF-ing in France? Maybe near a major city? Other ideas for volunteering to meet new people and practice my newly-learned French? Anybody with insight into physical demands of WWOOFing? [rather long, sorry]

I'm tired of the conventional wisdom that the French don't know how to fight, or are cowardly, or always surrender. I'd like to put together (or find) a list of the great French military victories from ancient Gaul through WWII.

Hello, Hive,
I'm planning on moving to Paris a few months for work and pleasure. As a native Swede and a member of the EU group of states, I guess I'll have an easier time getting a somewhat reasonably priced apartment reasonably close to Cité, Montmartre or what have you (Notre Dame I guess would be the center point everything revolves around). Has the Hive got any good suggestions regarding apartment-finding?
Other tips on good areas to live, areas to avoid, would be great as a general guide.

What was the deal with Vichy France? I know pretty well the what, when, where, how and who...but why? When the Nazis conquered other countries, I assume they just absorbed them into the Reich -- but in France's case, they chose to install a puppet government instead. How come? And can we believe
Casablanca? Did the Vichy authorities really have enough autonomy to prevent Major Strasser from simply seizing Victor Laszlo and dragging him off to a concentration camp? If so, what kind of puppet government do you call
that?

I'd appreciate help with some terms from 14-16c (apx) France. The translations don't tell me about the social hierarchy or give any context. Thanks for any help you can give here. Or point me to an English-language explanation. Here goes: guidon, marechal, chevalier, seigneur, ecuyer. licencie en droit, chatellenie. sieur, chambellan, sire, noble homme. Sorry for lack of accents.

I plan to drive from Venice, Italy to Valenica, Spain in April or May 2009 using
the following route. I will stay for a few days or weeks in little spots along the way. I should have about six weeks in total. I mostly want to see a little of Spain and Italy, the French Riviera, Montpellier, Marseilles and finish at Valencia. Apart from that anything else I should try to see? Any parts of the chosen route I should avoid? What's driving like along that route? Any rental car companies which will let me pick up in Italy and drop off in Spain?

Is it possible to hire guides to travel with, or at least to show them around on a city-by-city basis for this sort of thing? I'm thinking specifically France, Spain, Italy. Willing to use University students or some other creative possibility.
