Another "help me find a great gift" question. My dad is 59, well-off financially and difficult to buy things for. He is currently restoring a 1929 Ford Roadster. A couple of years ago my brother got him a jumpsuit with his name embroidered on it, for working on the car. I am looking for a similarly awesome gift that is related to his hobby. I had an auto accident a while back in a Taurus where a huge truck got crushed against my passenger-side while I drove away with just a dent. The truck's front was completely crushed and it was towed away. I figured it was just luck that my car wasn't damaged much, but I recently read in a Ford brochure that their cars have solid steel frames which may be why my car was okay. Is the "solid steel frame" a marketing thing or really a unique feature of Fords?

I was just reading about how those massive, gas-hogging Ford F-350 etc pickup trucks are the bestselling "cars" in the United States, by a huge margin. While this seems absurd during $3 a gallon gas, I wonder when this started becoming the case that pickup trucks were the top sellers. This is just anecdotal, but it seems to me that in the 1970s the only people who drove the then quite smaller pickup trucks were people who used them for work. I can't quite believe there are that many independent contractors in the US who need to buy these outsized vehicles. As they suffer (most seemingly quite rightfully) at the pump, does anyone know where to find historical car sales data -- i.e., when did Ford pickups become the most popular car in America?

Anyone know of a source for third-party/aftermarket seats that can be safely installed in a 2000 Ford Explorer Sport? The "factory" seats in the truck aren't very ergonomic at all, and give my wife pretty bad back pain even on moderate (~150 mile) drives. She's got a 1200-mile trip coming up in two weeks, and I'd love to find a solution other than "keep using a lumbar support pillow" which is barely adequate. My Internet searches haven't turned up anything at all, and a "truck accessories" shop I went to in Austin (I'm now in Houston) said "Sorry, we can't help you."
