Take (me) Out to the Ball Game

My husband and I are hoping to catch several weeknight Nationals games this season. While Ben's Chili Bowl half-smokes are awesome I don't think I can permit myself to eat them with frequency. What are your favorite picnic/ballpark dinners and snacks that we could make a day ahead of time and eat cold? [more inside]

What are your most delicious rhubarb uses/recipes?

So it's rhubarb season and I've finally managed to buy a big batch, yay! I love the stuff and have been waiting for this all year. I usually make crumbles/stews, but am looking to push the boat out a little more this time to get the most out of it, finding new recipes and also ways to preserve for when it's no longer around (jams, in alcohol, freezing?). What are your favourite recipes and what other things have you found pair well with it? Have you ever made booze with rhubarb? I'd be grateful for any tips, and thank you in advance!

Healthy eating on a long train ride

There will be a 12-14 hour train ride tomorrow, during daylight hours in America, for two adults. What should we pack to take with us to eat that is small and healthy? No cooler will be taken. We can visit a grocery store today. There is no local Trader Joe's.

Safe to eat?

Last night, around 9:00 pm, I sliced up some yellow and red onions, threw them in a crockpot with a stick of butter, set them on low (timer set to 8 hours) and went to bed. (this a faux-carmelizing technique I've done before). Bad dreams about the onions and leaving a crockpot going overnight. Woke up around 11:30pm to the smell of onions. Even upstairs in a closed room, my eyes were burning. Husband's eyes too. I asked my husband to turn them off. Woke up this morning and decided to turn them back on and give it a go. I have them on high now, planning to cook them all day. Will they be safe to eat? They were not refrigerated overnight. They sat in a warm crockpot with butter all night. They smell delicious. Is it safe to serve them to guests tonight?

Low carb until dinner to lose weight?

I live with a group of friends and we all take it in turns to cook dinner one day of the night, which usually consists of lasagne, pasta, rice etc. I am wondering if I could lose weight if I ate low carb for breakfast and lunch, and then ate dinner that is prepared by my housemates? [more inside]

How to order a specific coffee-based experience in Paris

When in Paris in 2009, my sister and I saw the people at a table near us being served a delightful assortment of small pastries to accompany a coffee - and at the time, we learned the name for this. Apparently it is a "thing." But those brain cells have long since been killed off. We may be re-visiting Paris in 2014, and if we want to replicate this experience...what does one call it? I think there were three small bits of heaven on the side of the coffee.

Shopping Cart without checkout

I have a client that has a scooter food delivery service. What I need to do is build menus for each of the restaurants, have the user be able to add items to a cart and then get a total. The actual transaction will occur at the customers home upon delivery so there's no need to deal with payments online. I'd like to use something open source and I've been looking at X-cart but I'd like to consider as many options as possible. WP/WooCommerce doesn't work because it requires a payment gateway and real time transaction (as far as I can tell) I'd love some recommendations. Thanks.

What's your "go-to" salad?

Inspired by this post, I'm working on my own "go-to" salad that I'll always be able to make. The criteria are: "fresh ingredients you can get in most stores, which you will never tire of, and can eat twice a week for the rest of your life." Do you have a "go-to" salad or something similar? - I'm looking for inspiration here so the more unusual/personal the better!

When re-heating your food is not an option

I've just started a new job that doesn't have a microwave (or an oven) in the kitchen, which is a big downer for me as I've always taken leftovers or other easily heated food for work lunches (and there isn't any other heating facilities close by that I can use). The thought of only being able to take cold salads or plain sandwiches for lunch isn't very appealing as I quite enjoy tucking into a spaghetti bolognaise or chicken schnitzel at lunchtime, and with winter approaching here in the southern hemisphere I live off hot, chunky soups during those months. Can anyone suggest any filling foods I can take for my lunch that don't need to be hot/warm to be delicious? Bonus points if they aren't too expensive or difficult to make in addition to dinner of a night.

Lovely Asian soup in Montreal -- But what's it called?

Agh! I've just come back from Montreal and I've already forgotten the name of this Asian soup that is everywhere. It seems to be at Thai restaurants as well I think as (other) Asian places and I wanted to look it up and see what's in it because I didn't get a chance to try it. I remember it had "aise" as the last bit (I know that's not THAT helpful) and was, as I said, just everywhere, at least in the theatre district and Chinatown. I think it may be Tom Yum or something of that ilk. It looked somewhat related. I think it had noodles. Can someone help? I'm sure this is a very easy question if you're actually in Montreal. Thanks!

Need advice on transitioning cats to healthier cat food

We have 2 cats that are a little less than 2 years old. They are both active and healthy little terrors with no medical issues. One of them seems like she is always hungry. While I get that there are some animals that will whine for food until they drop dead from overfeeding, when I gave her more she seemed happier. However, at that point she gained a little more weight than she should have to remain healthy, so I wanted to find some food that is more nutritious, has less byproducts, more protein and helps them feel fuller. What are Princess croquettes?

You may recall the grisly story of Armin Meiwes, the German cannibal who posted an ad for someone willing to be eaten, and ended up eating a man named Bernd Brandes, who answered the ad. Meiwes said "I sauteed the steak of Bernd, with salt, pepper, garlic and nutmeg. I had it with Princess croquettes, Brussels sprouts and a green pepper sauce." I remember some speculation at the time of what exactly "Princess croquettes" were, but was there any definitive answer? I've Googled for it to no avail.

What was this Sri Lankan Peppercorn?

At a local Sri Lankan festival a few months ago I had what I thought was a fresh black peppercorn - it was a small black ball, smooth on the outside with a bit of salt coating it, and distinctly juicy. A guy was selling little glass jars of them. I think he recommended I put one in my Lion beer. I tried looking up fresh black peppercorns, but apparently they turn black as part of preparation and I can't find anything like this online. I did find peppercorns in salt in a bottle, but they were definitely green. Am I misremembering this, or is this standard food item of some kind?
