The gift that keeps on eating

I'm trying to get my brother and sister-in-law (who are in their mid 30s) a good food gift for Christmas. They live in Nashville and are foodies. Last year we got them a cheese calendar (every month, they were mailed a delicious local cheese. This was in West Virginia). They liked it and I hope to do something like that again - a little gift each month that just automatically shows up. Any ideas? [more inside]

Where can I buy gold-plated cutlery?

A recent episode of Gastropod convinced me that I should get some gold-plated cutlery as a present for a friend (it supposedly makes certain foods taste nicer). I haven't had any luck finding cutlery in the UK from the usual trustworthy department stores, so now I'm willing to widen the search to other UK stores and also online stores in the US.

"Hey, this is terrible... want some?" (Book recommendations wanted.)

My wife and I were talking the other night, and we were wondering about how human beings figured out what food is edible and what isn't - what possessed folks to figure out if they ate this part of the fish, but not that part, then they wouldn't die, or if they could just get past the prickly parts of this plant, the innards were good? Terrible food phobia. Please help.

I have a terrible phobia of tuna fish, particularly when it's covered in lots of mayo. Just being around someone eating it makes me gag and want to vomit. I work at a small company where we all eat lunch together. If I see someone is eating tuna I have to make an excuse to leave the room. My coworkers are becoming suspicious. My question is how do I deal with this? It's seems ridiculous that I feel almost embarrassed to talk about it and have trouble just saying the words "tuna" let alone talking about with a counselor. Yet I feel so overwhelmed sometimes, I feel like something is wrong with me. Is there a way to overcome this obstacle on my own? I'm an otherwise healthy and mentally stable person in a long term relationship.

What's the best place to buy a heritage turkey in Los Angeles?

Pork makes me sick

Last couple of years i notice that 2-4 hours after eating pork, (with the exception of cured pork like bacon) I feel sick: achy, stomach ache, vaguely feverish. My father admits he hasn't eaten pork in years but simply says; Just don't really like it i guess. But then he recalls that his father couldn't tolerate it. Made him sick. Poking around the internet I can't really find a reasonable explanation for this. Thoughts?

How to get some HEAT in my Chinese food

I live in an extremely whitebread town, and nothing I have done has induced any of the Chinese restaurants to make my food in the least hot. I say "extra hot" or "extra spicy" or "with hot peppers" and the food seems exactly the same. They must have had people complain that what they ordered was "too hot." What can I say in Chinese to get the point across? How do you say the pepper paste stuff that is made out of pepper flakes and oil, and then lots of it?

Snack packs for grownups--the hangry (hungry + angry) kind

I'm a grown woman, but when I haven't eaten and my sugar drops, the "hangriness" starts. The anger, irritation, total irrationality. I've tried carrying luna bars, etc, (though that doesn't help a ton) but I think I'd like to throw together some snack packs (like,a ziplock bag with assorted goodies) for myself to toss in my bag when I'm out the door. I'll also be traveling a lot in the next couple months, and definitely need to be on top of this. I'd love some suggestions on what kinds of food to throw in my snack packs.

Fun variations on fried egg on toast?

I'm attending a Ghibli-themed potluck this weekend, and I've volunteered to bring fried egg on toast from Laputa. However, I have two reservations. First, 20+ people will be bringing food and a full slice of toast + egg per person is just too much. Second, egg-on-toast is only really good when hot and freshly made.
