Do pregnant Japanese women eat sushi?

I'm interested in thoughts and superstitions centred around eating and food in pregnancy around the world. What are you advised to eat or avoid in your country when pregnant? What are you told will happen to your baby (or its character) if you eat specific foods. Also, do Japanese women really give up sushi when pregnant and do the French give up their camembert and brie?

What are fun, complicated dessert recipes I can make in my home?

I really love baking although I don't love cooking. I made donuts for the first time over the weekend and it was fun! I'd never fried anything before! I'd like to try some more new challenges! What are your suggestions? I have the basic stuff (food processor, stand mixer, dutch oven, double boiler) but nothing particularly fancy. What desserts -- tarts, cakes, pies, cookies, donuts, candies, new types of desserts I have never before encountered -- will make me try new things in the kitchen and help me feel proud of the tasty and beautiful creation I have created? Where and what should we eat across America?

I'm going on a road trip from Boston to San Diego in June, and we want to find some fun places to eat--restaurants (from holes-in-the-wall to fancy), cafés, ice cream, food truck, foods found in only your town. Anything and everything goes! We've got time, so we can veer off our path, too. I can use the internet of course (and I will), but I would love to hear from locals who know stuff the internet doesn't (especially in smaller towns/rural areas). Here's our route. And a map is also attached [more inside]

What do you feed a finicky cat?

My cat was perfectly fine eating wise until she was 6 months and got spay surgery. I feel that now she is very different- stopped eating dry food and she only eats maybe 1 can of hills I/d gastrointestinal prescription diet per day. That if I force feed her with a spoon. I tried forti flora and even heating up her food. It only helps so much. She does eat a little but simply not enough for her age/ weight. How do I get her to eat more or not be such an ordeal every single feeding time? I did set up feeding times evening and mornings and nothing in between . What else should I put in food to entice her to eat or what type of canned food did you try?

Baby starts fighting purées

Our 10-month old has eaten purees happily since about month four. She's now transitioning to solid foods (steamed carrots, puffs, rusks), but has not yet mastered it well enough that she's getting significant nutrition from it. But she's now spurning the purees--both old favorites and new additions, homemade and store bought. No worries she'll starve, but we'd love her to eat her purees happily again. Any tips? What foods can I make with ~4 cups of homemade ranch dressing?

Last night I made 4 cups of ranch dressing out of 2 cups of buttermilk, 2 cups of sour cream, and 2 packets of Hidden Valley dressing mix. It'll probably spoil within a week, so unless I start eating it in bowls like soup I need ways to use it up besides condiment use. I think it would work fine as the liquid in my trusty buttermilk biscuit recipe, and be great in mashed potatoes. What else could I make with it? [more inside]

Can I still make good Mexican food without nightshades?

I've been directed by my naturopath to avoid nightshades (tomatoes, peppers, chilies, and others) as a way to improve my eczema. It has been helping so far, but I'm finding I really, really miss Mexican food. I'm talking about the standard stuff: salsa, tacos, fajitas, chilli, YUM. Do you know of any good nightshade substitutes that could be used in these dishes? Or any alternative recipes for these items that do not contain the forbidden foods?
