Where are your favorite places to chow down in downtown Halifax? [more inside]
At a conference in March, I'll be organizing a group of public history colleagues for a dinner conversation. I'd really like skip the hotel restaurants and chains take them to Baltimore's Little Italy neighborhood, but I don't know much about the area. Can you recommend a good place where 15 people could have dinner, ideally in a private room or somewhere easy to hear? And what other sites/stops/points of interest would some geeky historians like to know about? Thanks!
Me and one girlfriend have a layover at Pu Dong airport (yuck yuck yuck) from 7:00 PM to 10:30 AM. We're wondering what to do, and whether it's safe to roam around Shanghai all night. [more inside]
I'm planning to go to the Storm King Art Center (in New Windsor, NY) on Friday. I'd like to eat something delicious for lunch while I'm there or before I go. I can bring it from Manhattan (or anyplace in the city, I guess), but I would have to buy it the day before on Thanksgiving. Or, I could eat near the museum or near my hotel in Monroe. [more inside]
We'll be in San Juan for a few days next month and I'm looking for recommendations for eating out. [more inside]
My wife and I are going on vacation early in September and would like to focus on fine dining. We live in the bay area and have been up to Sonoma/Napa many times as well as Portland and would like to broaden our horizons. Looking for both locations and restaurant recommendations. [more inside]
I'm traveling to France this September with my mother and we're going to be there during the Fête de la Gastronomie, which is great! Except that I don't know what we should do or how we should do it. [more inside]
will be in LA for a week in late July but only 2 days are mine. Alone, staying near the Getty. As I have not been in this city for more than a day in 40 years and aside from seeing the Getty, would love any recommendations of food, entertainment, neighborhoods to walk (if such a thing even exists here).
Asking for friends who are in Turkey for the next week. They have done lots of guidebook research and have accommodations sorted out, but are looking for personal recommendations for must-see/must-do activities as well as recommendations for outstanding food and drink (read: alcohol wherever possible). What are some of the tastiest, most interesting regional foods and food products in Europe? [more inside]
We'll be making a long car trip sometime later this winter from Jersey City to Bristol, TN. We'll pack a cooler, but any suggestions for good restaurants to eat at on 78 West to Harrisburg and then 81 South to Tennessee? [more inside]
This weekend me and pips (aka mrs. jonmc) will be in Baltimore. We have a wedding on Saturday to go to, but sunday and monday are more or less ours. Not to be cliched but I definitely want great crab cakes, pit beef, etc. We'll be staying by the inner harbor but we'll have a rental car. Please tell me the must-go joints. Thanks.
We're visiting family in Japan next month and will have a week in Kyoto. We've got historical/cultural/tourist sites figured out, but would like recommendations for food. [more inside]
I am making pouches of "just add hot water" meals, and find most freeze dried food to be very expensive-- a serving of spinach could easily cost 4-5 dollars, if I buy a big bag! Where can I find some cheaper alternatives? [more inside]
My husband and I have realized that our ideal form of travel is to get an apartment in another city for a week or two and spend the entire time walking around the city, eating, and visiting museums. What are the best cities in the world we can do this in where we can also get around speaking English, Spanish, or German? [more inside]
Where should my boyfriend and I go and what should we do on a day trip to the Monterey Bay area? [more inside]
I'm currently in Mexico and will be returning home to the US in about a week. I'd like to bring back some tamales to share with my family, but I'm not sure whether or not I can bring them through customs. I've read the guidelines here and here, but I'm still not sure. [more inside]
Heading to Staunton, VA for a little anniversary getaway/Shakespeare nerd-fest in a few weeks. Aside from a show and tour at the reconstructed Blackfriars (which I am BEYOND excited about), what should we not miss? [more inside]
I'm about to depart to a foreign country with high priced, low quality, not kid friendly food. It is common for expats to bring meat with them and I want to do this too, with AskMe's help. [more inside]
Will be traveling to NY this summer for work for a week. Need to spend days on upper east side (5th and 104th). Nights I am free. Like to be able to walk to restaurants, windows browsing, perhaps some jazz. Any advice on what neighborhoods to look for hotels? I realize with the transit options perhaps this question doesn't make much sense, but I would rather not spend a lot of time or money in transit. And if you wouldn't mind suggesting some favorite gems of neighborhood restaurants, places that might be worth the trouble to get to?
We are travelling to Germany and the Czech Republic later this month. My mom has a set of severe food allergies, and would like to print some translated cards for restaurant staff just to be on the safe side. I'd like to translate this list into both German and Czech please. I'm happy to translate using a dictionary, but I feel that native speakers will have a better handle on subtle details, such as corn and its derivatives (for example, corn flour is not big in Canada, but corn starch and corn meal are in everything). Many thanks Metafilter! [more inside]
I need a way to give my girlfriend lots of good food that she can eat on the go as she travels to another state for an athletic competition. [more inside]
A friend and I are taking a short trip (about 3 days) to New Orleans. We're staying near the French Quarter, access to buses and bikes. Where should we go, what should we do? [more inside]
In mid-April, Pips and I will be taking a trip to New Orleans. It's our first time and our hotel is on the fringes of the French Quarter. We've been doing research about places to go (and when the time is right we'll call for a MeFi Meetup), but right now I need inside dope. I wanna know about great places for eating and drinking, especially unknown ones. I'm a big foodie and boozie, so I'm up for just about anything. Thanks in advance.
I'm planning a stay in a guest cottage on windward Oahu (Waimanalo) and for once will have a kitchen and access to an outdoor grill. I'm looking forward to cooking and am gathering information about shopping, farmers markets etc. My budget is flexible and I'll be cooking for 4 people. I would love any recommendations for shopping from people who know the area. Driving some distance is not a problem. I'll be staying in Waikiki for a couple of days prior so could load up on stuff there, too. Any recommendations for fun places to eat would be welcome as well. Food we like? Pretty much anything, hopefully with an emphasis on local. (As an indication of our taste, we have always enjoyed buying poke at Safeway and eating it on the beach.) Mahalo in advance!
My girlfriend and I have won a week's holiday in Paris over the new year period. Flights, bed, and breakfast are covered -- how can we stretch our food and entertainment budget? [more inside]
My girlfriend and I are visiting Reno to see my parents for Christmas. My parents are older (early 60's) and really enjoy doing "cool" things. We live in Portland and when my parents visit here they always have a great time and really enjoy doing the "cool" things we like to do. The thing is... [more inside]
I’m travelling with my significant other to New Orleans between December 29th and January 3rd, so we are looking for recommendations (food, bars, entertainment, etc.) Specific details and questions below the fold! [more inside]
For the next 8 months I'll be moving cities every 4 days or so and I'm doing a lot of couchsurfing. I like to prepare a meal for my hosts as a thank you and I'd like some suggestions for meal ideas. I can't travel with a fully stocked pantry, so meals that have few ingredients (preferably things readily available in South America, Europe, and Asia) are important. Advise me, culinary geniuses of mefi! [more inside]
Last winter when I was in Seoul, Mr. Holloway and I found ourselves watching some TV in our hotel room. I don't remember if we were on a Japanese station or if it was a random occurrence, but we came across a travel/food tv show episode featuring two hilarious Japanese women (maybe in their early 30s?) who were visiting an onsen in a snowy environment. I would love to find it again and watch more, if they have done other episodes. More details inside! [more inside]
I will be spending ten days in southern Spain at the end of next month. I love food and am more excited about the eating than maybe any other part of the vacation - not just because of the food itself but because the whole eating culture and schedule is different from what I am used to as an American. [more inside]
... or gut capacity to enjoy them all. Will be in Portland for two dinners, two breakfasts, and 1 or two lunches the end of the month. Help me make the most of that limited opportunity. Spoilt for choice and overwhelmed by ideas. What is absolutely the do not miss it thing we must eat? [more inside]
My girlfriend and I plan to go to Spain, leaving Christmas day and coming back a few days after New Years. We are interested in both activities and places it's just nice to be for a while. Spain is the primary destination here, but we're open to side trips into Andorra and/or Morocco. And, hey, how about the Baleric Islands? [more inside]
Does anyone know of a comprehensive online directory of world festivals?
I'm coming in on the 06:30 ferry at Harwich, England. I'm headed to Colchester on the train. I remember I did this last year, also on a Sunday, and realized that once I got to Colchester that early, the busses were not running and nothing was open so I couldn't get breakfast for hours (and even then, it was at a random hotel, who let me pay for their hotel breakfast). I'd like to avoid this tomorrow morning. I don't need to be in Colchester until the afternoon. Where can I have a nice breakfast? I'm not averse to Ipswitch or Harwich, but I do have a dog. Suggestions of sit-downs or take-outs (like bakeries) are welcome.
My SO and I are planning a long weekend trip up to Chicago with another couple in the fall. Wondering about the places to stay and things to do. We will most likely be driving so we'll have a car to get around town, so where we stay doesn't neccesarily have to be in the hub of all the touristy crap that we'll no doubt want to do at some point. I'm more concerned about other things. Details inside. [more inside]

There will be a 12-14 hour train ride tomorrow, during daylight hours in America, for two adults. What should we pack to take with us to eat that is small and healthy? No cooler will be taken. We can visit a grocery store today. There is no local Trader Joe's.
My girlfriend and I are going to New Orleans for Jazz Fest later this month. Although we'll spend a fair amount of time at the festival, we'd like to spend some time exploring NOLA itself. Looking for awesome restaurants, bars and fun things to do in New Orleans [more inside]
When in Paris in 2009, my sister and I saw the people at a table near us being served a delightful assortment of small pastries to accompany a coffee - and at the time, we learned the name for this. Apparently it is a "thing." But those brain cells have long since been killed off. We may be re-visiting Paris in 2014, and if we want to replicate this experience...what does one call it? I think there were three small bits of heaven on the side of the coffee.

I'm looking for a healthy, filling, carb-lite meal that I can prepare a few days in advance and take with me on a train without much spillage. Travel makes me stress-eat, and I'm looking for something that I can just conveniently take out and devour, but which also happens to be good for me.
I need a name for my travel/cooking blog -please Mefites give me your suggestions! More details inside. [more inside]
